John Arlott used to come out with things like” Clouds are scurrying across the blue sky, children are playing, a red bus is passing by…followed by a few minutes of similar observations then a remark along the lines of is anything more quintessentially English than these scenes? Oh, and by the way there is a game of cricket going on below us.” It was like listening to some old friends talking. And much discussion about the cakes old dears had baked and sent in for them. Very civilised in a way you don’t get know. And, it must be remembered, the three people they are parodying were very knowledgeable about the game. Richie Benaud was one of the greatest cricket captains of all time and an Australian legend.

I'm not a big fan of cricket. I remember in the Test Series, there wouldn't be much action due to the weather. I suspect it was John Arlott I heard doing the commentry.

This is a spoof on a BBC Radio 4 programme called Test Match Special. The programme features a panel of commentators who give continuous live reporting from international cricket matches. Their wealth of knowledge of the sport is amazing. Sometimes play is suspended for rain or bad light but they just keep broadcasting and it becomes an incredible chat show complete with occasional guests from the crowd and interviews with ex celebrity players.

If cricket spoofs interest you (and sports spoofs in general), you ought look into “The Twelfth Man,” a series of Aussie-based sound-alike spoofs of cricket commentators (and occasionally other sports), all voiced by ONE man, Billy Birmingham. His ability to mimic various personalities is uncanny, and it’s all extremely funny. Worth a listen!

You could do worse than to look up an exchange between Jonathan "Aggers" Agnew and Brian "Jonners" Johnston. Apparently, they never did announce that "the bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey", but they spared no opportunity to make each other laugh like drains.

Heh John Arlott, Richie Benaud, and probably Peter Baxter carrying on their roles in normal lives. John Arlott was a poet, his commentary of a streaker (called a freaker at the time) is legendary. Richie was a great Aussie captain and superb commentator. Peter Baxter was commentator and boss for a time of Test Match Special, BBC's radio cricket commentary program since about 1586.

@@CaptainBollocks.... Not as long in TMS format for as long as we think. I understand it came in in 1968, though cricket had been mentioned on the Home Service before that. The splitting of the Light Programme to Radio 1 and Radio 2 plus creating Radio 4 FM as separate programming in parts from Radio 4 Long Wave (and a couple of regional variations on MW) gave effectively extra channel space for the full five day test experience (if cut short by good playing by one side to four days or last day abandoned to rain then the programmes would revert to "normal" schedule). Brian Johnson of Down Your Way I think was the main anchor for BBC with John Arlott(ex Hampshire ) - I think John also appeared on TV - often in the 1970s one would turn the TV commentary off and play Radio 4 broadcast. For a while Radio on the TV Freeview the BBC added scorecards but lost the TCCB "contract" to show such to Sky or whatever so its back to plain audio now but "live" webpage updates with the TMS broadcast makes up for it on the laptop now

You should go and do a tour of North Wales and Scotland if your in the UK. Most places, north of Oxford are far cheaper than London. Try small towns and you will find real GEMS. I was in a small town near Dumfries in Scotland last week. 2 course meal and a pint £10.99. Rhyl in North Wales all you can eat breakfast £9.99 or a roast dinner in a church for £1.50 with a drink.

Cricket has changed a lot since this sketch was made, but cricket on the radio hasn't really. Often you're just listening to people having a chat while a game of cricket happens in the background, which I suppose is the joke here. It's still conversational and relaxed, and it still meanders and drifts much like a game of cricket often does. I used to like how the late Christopher Martin-Jenkins would wistfully describe Stuart Broad as "tall and fair-haired" as he walked back to his bowling mark, almost as if he was in love with him. Perhaps he was in a way, and who could blame him?

The number 3 of the FIFA ranking is 1-0 down to Slovakia. My team, The Netherlands, have won their first match against Poland. 1-2 We now have to face France on Friday. France is considered one of the favorits to win the title. But they first have to face my team, The Netherlands. Everybody fears them because they play extra well against favorites. Unless we are the favorits. Then we loae in the first round.
