You'd have to plant a grafted sapling as Alphonso is a grafted variety. If you plant alphonso seedling it will grow the parent variety which will not be alphonso. And will take more than 5 years to give fruit. Also, alphonso need a peculiar coastal climate (less than 25-30km from the coastline) and laterite soil as found in konkan region of Maharashtra. Other regions do grow Alphonso, but they will not be the top grade and be less flavourful.

Yes. In fact, most of the best and popular mangoes are grafted varities. If one tried to grow any of them out of a seed, the resulting fruit will be what is referred to as a Beeju mango (beej = seed), which is just not the same thing. In fact it might be worse than even your average American mango.

Alphonso's are very much available in Indian (Gujju) stores in the U.S. that are in Los Angeles and Sacramento of for that matter in most of the Indian Stores. They are especially exported to the US as they are loved not just by Indians but other communities.....but, for a price.

I've tried many mango varieties but I always go back to Alphonso!! It's my fav and the only one I'll have. I grew up playing on my family's fruit orchards and we had some mango varieties. But Alphonso is something else. There are two main types of sub-varieties- Ratnagiri and Devgad. They have different flavours and texture.

The soils should be highly enriched with nutrients. Red soil and black soil is best suited for growing mangoes. Plant the seed in a small pot and the pot should have coco peat &manure. Mangoes thrive in tropics like climate with ample sun and precipitation & where there are insect pollinators once they grow into a big tree.

The Banginapalli they tried looks very unripened. Best way to eat this variety is use a peeler to remove skin and then mark the sides in cubes and take them out from sides like how Indrani did it to get all the cube pieces fall in a plate.. Correct Ripened Banginapalli (with out artificial ripening) tastes awesome and will not have the too much heightened sweet taste of Alphonso..

One mango I am pretty sure surpasses Alphonso for the most(not for all because everybody has different taste preferences) is Malihabadi Dashhari and if someone likes mangoes with super smell and sweetness then they should try Chousa mango. One more thing a mango that is ripened on the tree has way better taste than those which have to ripen off the tree.

The first mango Banginapally is from South (Andhra Pradesh) and is called King of Mangoes wrt to size. The size you got is not big, they are really huge typically. It is also called the cut fruit as it is one of the mangoes that can be cut in cubes without juice dripping. It has a different kind of sweetness than juicy mangoes. The baginapally you got is not yet ripened. Andhra Pradesh is a state that is indigenous to large varieties of mangoes and is the largest exporter of mangoes. Every year there are special trains of mangoes transported to other states or export.
