This is super interesting. I worked in the Ames Corporate Office when we closed. The rumors were flying that week so there wasn’t a lot of work being done. Just a lot of nervous chatter. Then one day when we came in, I think it was Wednesday, there was a cardboard box in everyone’s office for personal items and that was it. Most of us were gone before lunch and on our way home to start the job hunt. By far one of the most surreal experiences of my life.

Wow I bet that hurt to be out of a job that easy. It’s sad Ames is out of business. Thanks to mismanagement. It’s upsetting to lose amazing retailers and what’s even worse the big wigs that ruined the company get huge bonuses and laughs their way to the bank while normal people lose their livelihood and struggle. It’s just the injustice of it all. I hear Ames is supposed to make a comeback but I bet it’s a lie unfortunately.

The Ames in Horseheads, NY is still there sitting empty. The signs are actually still there! This was originally a Hills location. There was another Ames in Elmira, maybe a mile from the one in Horseheads on the same road. That one closed in the 90s. It was a Big Lots for awhile and eventually the entire plaza was turned into an office park.

I met my 1st wife while we were both working at Jamesway. When our Jamesway closed down in Dec of '95, she went to work for Ames. When our local Ames closed down shortly after, she went to work at Woolworth's. While she was on maternity leave in '97, Woolworth's went out of business. It seems like every job she loved went out of business...she was just bad luck! LoL

There is still one perfectly intact and untouched in Brooklyn Ohio. It's also a former Gold Circle Department Store. Its almost located directly across Memphis Kiddie Park should check it out only 1 other youtuber made a video on it! This specific location also has an old Stop N Shop grocery store to the left of it also intact abandoned untouched in 1970s styling it sits far from the road so has a huge parking lot.

We had Ames and Bradlees where I grew up. Both were the same thing. Loved them as a kid. I found an AMES about 10 years ago that opened new near me in NC but it was mostly just overstock and such. Like a new junk store. Only lasted about a year and went out of business. Who knows maybe they didn't have the rights to use the name and logo.

Nice. Yea that is very likely they might not have had the rights, I never heard of them opening up a place like that.

Did I hear correctly when you mentioned Ames bought out Bradlees? I worked at Bradlees for years and I have never heard of such thing! I wonder, if this is accurate, when it happened? I was an employee of Bradlees Dept.Store (a Stop & Shop Company in Lewiston, ME ) and we closed our location June 9th 1996 . The chain went bankrupt ultimately and closed all stores several years later. The former building I worked at was NEVER again a department store. A movie theater opened in that space for quite awhile and then they also closed. I wonder when a store totally shuts down and goes bankrupt, if a person or group of former employees could open a new Bradlees or Ames? And run it so it would succeed!
@WhatstheStory123 Жыл бұрын
Hello, my understanding is Ames bought several former Bradlees locations that were already closed and converted them into Ames stores. Thanks for sharing I love hearing from former employees. I also have a Bradlees video somewhere on my channel.

@@WhatstheStory123 While I have serious doubts about this coming to fruition, I feel it will be a lot like Grand Union's revival in which they operate a limited number of stores in the Northeast. It also borders on being a nostalgia grab with how they plan to have drop ceilings and tile floors. In addition, they plan to have cafes and grocery sections, which would give off a Kmart vibe.
