Amethyst is popular, but popular things are often imitated by fakes. This video will show you how to avoid one dangerous fake amethyst.

“A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials.” Seems appropriate for the situation. 😂

Absolutely true on all accounts. It ain't pleasant, but where you end up after the trials and friction is a far cry better. Thanks for the encouragement.

I'd imagine your client is wondering about the quality of the metal after you debunked that amethyst. The lack of finish work on the inside of the bezel makes me wonder. This video is a perfect example of why gem cutters need gemology knowledge and equipment. You are a credit to the lapidary arts.

I agree - the i'll finish is not a credit to the technician who did the work, but then again, neither is the engraving. Interesting to me that i've been tearing myself apart for the past two years working on my hand-push engraving skills and when I see stuff like this i'm like... Heck... I can do better than that XD Maybe I should then... HAH. Thanks for your constant support ~

@@GemologyforSchmucks Anyone with the patience and the eye for precision stone cutting could absolutely do precision metal work. I've been assembling the tools for jewelry craft and the kit is almost complete now. Not quite the full rig with a rolling mill but I am at the level to smelt and cast and to build skills with a piercing saw I use old coins and tokens. Silver is pretty cheap and makes gorgeous pieces. Looking forward to your next video!

I would love a whole video on how to identify glass. Especially if you can clarify how you could see it was glass in the polariscope. I collect vintage Jewellery and it is the number one thing I want to ascertain first. 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

Yes~ the snakeband effect (shown in this video) is what demonstrates that it is glass, as well as the gas bubbles. In a polariscope you'll see a blink effect, and potentially a bullseye effect, which I talk about in other videos on quartz (link below) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bbahgLSa3pjddoU.html

“Like a gun in a dark Alley”! Nice analogy. I will ask though, why fake an Amethyst? Jeez Peter. Huge thank you’s for another great share my friend. Rrrrrrrrooooooogggggg from Wales. Btw the glass was a pretty good fake, until you found the bubble. Keep safe Peter. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿👊

Thanks Rog - yah, I was disturbed when I saw the bubble. The colour was a dead-ringer for amethyst (and I agree with you... WHY fake it?! impatience and predictability I guess.)

Ouch. That reminds me of the time i sent a lead glass filled "ruby" I got at an estate sale off to the GIA. 85 bucks is a cheap price for a valuable lesson though. 😂 i think they wrote an article about it, but im not sure, it was very suspicious timing lol. Love your videos.
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks Жыл бұрын
Ouch indeed - your perspective on the GIA report is the same perspective i apply to my gemological tuition. If that initial chunk of money can keep me from making 1 mistake on a major stone, it will pay for itself. Of course, the path to knowledge is paved with mistakes and blunders, but best they be cheap ones with a high value impact XD

@@GemologyforSchmucks Indeed and a well put comparison, it led to a lot of knowledge about corundum and treatments. Now I facet and work with silver. So all positives from a mistake. I've been trying to get into the gem buisness lately, but I'm not sure how to approach it. I have been testing the ri of several stones lately and is how I happened on your channel. I love the content.

😂😂😂 you’re so funny 😂 Also I’m not a gemologist (I wish I was) but I thought quartz doesn’t scratch and glass does, that would have been a major red flag for me!! ❤
@austinfreyrikrw6651
@austinfreyrikrw6651 Жыл бұрын
Quartz can definitely get scratched. Ever heard of Moh's hardness scale? Any stone will be able to scratch another stone of the same or lower hardness. For instance, quartz (hardness of 7) will be able to be scratch by another quartz(7) or beryl (7.5-8), or topaz (8), or sapphire (9), or diamond (10).

Thanks Ashling~ quartz deeefinitely scratches, though perhaps less easily than most glass.

Man, that's a drag. The only "gem" I own is an emerald cut "peridot". It's about the size of my thumbnail and it only cost like $20 so... yeah. Deep green color, almost completely clear except for some spherical inclusions. Suspiciously lightweight for its size, covered in mis-aligned facets, and it looked awfully blurry when I put it in water. So it was fun for that, at least, playing amateur gemologist and confirming in five or six different ways that it wasn't real peridot. But that's much easier than amethyst, because quartz is so similar to glass in specific gravity and IOR.

@@GemologyforSchmucks Thanks! I credit this channel with a substantial amount of my interest in gemology and grasp of some of the tools and practices involved. If I had more working capital or a stronger stomach, I'd be tempted to go beyond hobby status. And yeah, I got a 10x three-element loupe and a precision digital scale for the hobby. I shopped around for those things and they're certainly not top-of-the-line precision instruments, but... $20 in knowledge is certainly a in the bucket compared to the cost of entry just for the tools.
