Ammo Can Hack: DYI Project Making a Lockable Firearms Case

I've seen folks use ammo cans at the range to usually transport bullets. I also remember seeing an ammo can that had a lock on it and thought that was a pretty cool idea.
With all the holiday sales going on, I found more ammo cans for an even lower price ($10 ea or 50% off and $5 flat S/H), so I picked up a few. I also found some ammo can specific closed-cell foam inserts as well as an ammo can lock kit.
So tonight's project is to put them all together and create a lockable firearms ammo can case.

Appreciate a nice glass of tea while tinkering on the newest project myself, cheers 🥃. I will have to try this - this coming summer. Long days, lotta time to fill and one can never have enough storage. With my son now walking, definitely want to have locks on a few things. Thanks for the video👍

I am a vet...and by KZfaq Law, that means I know everything..... I do not approve of the foam inserts used in this video. Long term contact with gun oil and cleaner will degrade that foam and turn it into a new life form. I DO approve of a locking box. FWIW...I do the same dang thing, but....I put my G19 and extra mag into a holster, along with a Leatherman tool, a Glock Tool, and a booklet that shows how to disassemble and clean a G*&#K into the box with an appropriate amount of boxed or vac-bagged ammo. HERES THE HOOK !!! Dont overload the box with ammo so that the smallest person who might be required to carry, could not do so effectively. In my case, a small framed woman who can carry maybe 20lbs. A GO BOX NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO GO ! If you over load it with ammo....its a brick and a bag of concrete....

Have seen the ammo can inserts, but forgot about them. Thanks for the reminder. The lock is new to me, thanks for that too :-))

I have a couple of observations regarding this type of lock. One of the benefits of an ammo can is the compression locking system against the rubber gasket. This creates an airtight, waterproof container. By making a hole in the box, the container is compromised. A locking ammo can, will not keep me out if I can carry the can away and to my workbench. I can open the can faster than it will take me to find the tools to open it. A big pair of wire cutters or a small bolt cutter or even a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel to the two bars on each side of the compression latch will get me in quickly.

Me thinks you're over thinking this a bit too much. The is no safe, RSC or other impenetrable, water tight, lock box. Just an ammo can hack with a lock on it, simple. No claims to anything more. A "let's try this project" for fun.. I'm clearly not the operator you are to have the same concerns over airtight seals or easy break-ins once it's on your workbench. Your observations/concerns remind me of an old quote from the movie Stripes I remember from my younger days..."Lighten up, Francis..."

You don't need to drill anything, just get a long neck lock! You can use the lower handle to lock the lift handle at a slight angle keeping the ammo can airtight and waterproof and then put the long neck lock through the hole in the lift handle and down through the lower handle, violá!

In the professional world it’s known by its original/official name which is unibit meaning universal bit. Unibit (drill bit), a roughly conical drill bit with a stairstep profile. en.m.wikipedia.org › wiki It gained the nickname “step bit” because of its stair step like structure and then later some people started calling it “step down bit” some companies started marketing it under the name “step bit” because they know most people would not know the original name and they wanted to make it easier for people to find their product when searching online. They knew most people would type it in using its physical appearance so they marketed it as “step bit” in reality it would be more accurate to call it a “step UP bit” instead of a “step DOWN bit” simply because as you use it, the hole you’re drilling become larger not smaller. So as you run your drill you’re not stepping down (decreasing) the bit size but actually stepping up (increasing) the bit size.

Just saw your video. You could have referenced where you could buy the lock and closed foam insert. Case Club did not show the .50 cal foam insert nor the lock. I think Amazon sells the locking studs.
