You are going to facepalm when you read this, but just get a few sheets of aluminum foil spread over the box opening, and you pinch it down with the UNMODIFIED lid. You don't have to modify the lid by removing the rubber gasket, sanding, or buy conductive gaskets, etc. Just remove the paint on the lip of the can so it will touch the foil to make a connection. I use Reynolds Wrap, "Super Duty" and 2-3 sheets for thickness and redundancy.

If you don't remove the paint on the lid, how do you get metal to metal contact? Can you show us your tests?

@andrewmccarthy4144 The foil over the opening is your metal to metal contact. You strip the paint off of the lip of the opening, then use high conductive paint on the lip of the opening where the foil will touch if you are too worried.

I made two huge cages for $30 each: 2 55-gallon steel drums, $15 each; 1/2” round foam, 15’ for $5; 2” conductive tape30’ for $15. I used the foam and tape to make the conductive gasket. Perfectly blocks 4G with a bit of weight on the lid or using the lid locking ring. 3 milk crates fit with some room on the side. I store all my mission critical electronics in them: radios, flashlights & lanterns, batteries & chargers, solar power system components, PV/monitor, spare parts, hand power tools.

Another option might be to keep the rubber gasket to retain the water tight seal (electronics don't like water any more than they like EMPs), but double layer the Faraday protection by wrapping your electronics with a metal foil, or by placing them in a rolled up Mylar bag as is used in food storage, or in a manufactured Faraday bag before placing them inside the ammo can. I would be very interested to see how that experiment would measure up to the one in this video.

I'm glad someone like you puts out videos on this subject. There are way too many people making videos about EMP, who have no clue about the basic physics of the process. One guy was using a stun gun to test his "EMP bags" for "EMP Protection", LOL. One thing I wanted to add. Stainless steel based gasket will probably work best for the metal enclosure. Copper based gasket may develop galvanic corrosion at the contact. If this is the only choice, adding some NoOX may help. A small amount of bearing grease or Fluid Film may also help to keep the contact surfaces from corrosion. BTW, I'd love to have a spectrum analyzer like yours. Unfortunately, they are prohibitively expensive. :( Another thing worth mentioning: I see that you are trying to make a little money on the side. Nothing wrong with that. Just a suggestion, if you don't mind. I think conductive cloth "EMP" covers for Honda EU-series generators may sell very well. I don't think anyone else is making a similar product. Honda sells a regular cloth cover for their EU1000 and EU2000 inverter type generators for about $18. Perhaps making something similar with a longer "skirt" at the bottom may sell very well. You have the tools to make proper testing of the product. Any decent seamstress can make one fairly easily. Patent it and make a little money. Best of luck to you!

Dr. Bradley. Could you use aluminum foil to make a wrap around the issued rubber gasket and then reinstall it. It would seem like that would make a similar conductive seal from the sanded edges and still give some water resistance by the cushion deflection of the rubber gasket. It may not be as good as your professional gaskets but I wonder how effective that would be for those of us on a rock bottom budget. Might you do such a test? Thanks for your service to the country in doing these videos.

I have done this and am here because after enough opening and closing of the box, the foil tape comes loose from the rubber (that is the problem - getting it to stick well to the rubber). The copper foil tape ends up bunching up and turning into a clump and coming apart. A I have done this on a large trash can, though, and gotten pretty good results after removing the handle on the top and foil taping over the holes and then installing some weather stripping around the lid, and then applying the foil tape all around on top of the weather stripping. Then, in order for it to really block, I use tie downs with ratchets on them criss-crossed across the can. So, yeah, there are work arounds, but I think i am going to try his gaskets. And to @Lee Fithian, I don't think that is conductive because I believe that the gum on the bottom might insulate it from the surface to which it adheres...not sure though.

Seems like one could simply ground the lid to the base with some copper wire. Keep the good factory rubber gasket.
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
They certainly could do that. Unfortunately, grounding won't help the can to shield any better. It's a common misunderstanding, but grounding has no effect on EMP shielding. It has to do with the frequencies and distance from the EMP source, i.e., far-field vs near-field electromagnetic waves. The short of it is that any conductive barrier will provide shielding through absorbing and reflecting the incident wave, grounded or not. What's important is to seal up the narrow seams, which act as efficient receiving antennas.

Have you tried it with a piece of thicker aluminum which is 0.019 inch thick (unpainted aluminum roll valley coils) which is used in construction and is stocked at hardware and building materials stores. A piece can be made that is a inch or so larger on both axis's than can circumference dimensions. Just sand down rim of can like you show and then lay the thin sheet over top of can and hand form it down over edges (like folding a Christmas package ends)and then simply push lid with regular rubber gasket down firmly to finish form the top sheet of protection over the can. I have tried this and it forms up well and is reusable when opened again. I just wondered if you could try such a lid with your equipment. Due to scarce funds not everyone can afford the better foam system you have and lots of common folks can get these unpainted aluminum coils locally. Thanks for your great work.

My question is what is the combined frequency spectrum and field strengths of the CME and Nuclear EMPs? At what frequencies are the highest magnitude field strengths and at what point do are consumer grade electronics give up the magic smoke and therefore, cease to operate? Although the 3 V/m Radiated immunity (RI) to a modulated radiated field is a common specification for Class A (not susceptible)immunity performance, I suspect the Class D (damage) performance is probably +26 dB (60 V/m) or more. Back around 1999 we used an ammo can to shield a video camera. We had cables to be shielded and filtered also, but only needed 34dB minimum shielding effectiveness for 150 V/m RS monitoring. Paint and rubber gasket were removed and a fabric gasket was installed just like your conversion. It worked great.
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, You'd have to do an inverse Fourier on the EMP signal to get an exact answer to your question regarding field strength across frequency. Of course in the ideal "impulse" case, the field level would be nearly the same across all frequency (a true ultrawideband pulse), and the max field would be somewhere between 30 kV/m and 50 kVm, depending on who you believe. There are at least five different reputable groups who have published predictions of field levels of a nuclear EMP. Of course, field strength is only one aspect of survivability. Offending frequency, receive conductor length, orientation, and impedance, as well as nearby radiators and ground planes, all fold into it. CMEs are an entirely different beast. They have very low frequency content, perhaps only into the 10's of Hertz. Because of their wavelength, they will only couple into very long conductors (such as power transmission lines, or long buried conductors). What ends up mattering with them is the induced current in those long conductors, which can damage transformers and other associated electronics.

Grounding a Faraday cage really doesn't have any effect on the shielding performance. The metal itself acts as a protective barrier by redistributing charge carriers (electrons), thereby helping to cancel the field inside the cage. Grounding of Faraday cages is only done when there is electrical breakdown (a big spark) that you're trying to shunt away. That's not the case with an EMP.

You could perhaps lay the tape in on top of the gasket, but if you ever pull it out, you'd have a very hard time getting it back in. It's under compression, and once removed, it won't go in easily.

Because conventional EMP devices produce explosions driven by HPMW technology, they may have a frequency in the range of 100 MHz - 100 GHz. EMP, depending on altitude and power, can generate electric fields up to levels of 50 kV / m. Will these boxes, or any faraday cadge for that matter really provide protection at these levels?
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 2 жыл бұрын
Nuclear-generated EMP devices are typically thought to produce radiated energy from about 1 MHz to 1 GHz. Electric field levels can ready 50 kV/m, although some people claim "super EMP" weapons can reach perhaps 200 kV/m. I don't know that such devices have ever been seen in the real world though. A box or EMP bag that provides 50 dB shielding will reduce a 50 kV/m signal down to around 158 v/m, survivable by nearly any electronic device. I'd be comfortable depending on such products to ensure the survivability of small electronics.

Could you wrap the existing rubber gasket with either aluminum foil or aluminum tape? Still going to bare metal with your dremel tool.
@disasterprepper

Yes, I think this would work, but getting the rubber gasket back into the channel would be difficult. Also, I'm not sure how durable the foil would be. Still, it's an idea...

I was thinking of doing exactly this on my 50 cal ammo can VHF/UHF radio. I have a 2-1/2" roll of aluminum duct tape that measures .004" thick. This feels much thicker than heavy duty kitchen aluminum foil. It also measures a very low resistance with an ohm meter except where the printing is on the foil. However the printing ink/paint is very thin and can easily be removed with an abrasive pad. I think prepping the can and lid, cutting the tape narrower, then folding the tape around the rubber gasket (with the fold facing to the outside of the can) would work very well. The adhesive side of the tape measures a higher resistance than the non sticky side so make sure only the adhesive free side touches the can and lid. The tape seems tuff yet fairly malleable and conforms well to the edge of the can without tearing so I think it would last a while. Even if it needs replaced periodically one roll would probably last forever. I wish I could subject it to a quantifiable test!

@Steve Frank - I took this very approach (the aluminum duct tape) and rapped the entire OEM rubber gasket. To ensure the tape would be strong, I doubled it on the side that makes contact with the can. I also used a cheap black rubber floor mat as isolator within the can making sure that edges overlapped at the corners. Not folded over but one side tucks behind the other at each corner. Finally, the bottom so it is all lined. This ensured that no items within would come into contact with the can. What I did not do, but will after seeing this video, is remove the paint on the lid and can's top edge. I should have though of that but not a difficult enhancement.

The trick would be getting the gaskets back into the channel. I did see photos of someone who used copper tape on the gaskets, and that looked to work well.

A post on Reddit brought me to your videos and I want to thank you for spreading the knowledge you have. But I noticed in your testing that you have used 3 different lemgth antennas for the 3 value readings. I would imagine that the reading would be different if you changed the antenna for open air readings. What was the reasoning for changing this?
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, I only used one broadband antenna for the transmit pulse and a simple duck antenna for the spectrum analyzer across all tests. Can you point to what you're seeing that looks like different antennas?
@duffman59000
@duffman59000 5 жыл бұрын
@@disasterprepper thanks for taking the time to answer as I know it's probably not the most fun thing to do, the antenna I am talking about is the rubber duck antenna attached to the spectrum analyzer. It appears that the antenna for open air and conductive gasket appear to be the same but the antenna for rubber gasket test appears to be shorter in length with a moulded notch just after the pivot point (5:27 mark in video) Even with this observation I do not see how you could have used this to manipulate the end result so I do not think that is happening. Just a new ham trying to see if there was any rhyme or reason Thanks again and I can't wait to see what whole home surge protection device you create!

Ah, after you sent the images, I see what the confusion is. For any given test (say an ammo can), i stay with a single antenna not to affect the results. On another test, say the conductive cloth, I might use a different antenna, although they're all very similar in performance. The idea is to compare a free space measurement and a shielded measurement with the same setup for any given configuration. It really doesn't matter if I change antennas when testing different items as long as the antennas are all able to receive the transmit frequencies.

Why doesn't the adhesive material interfere with the conductivity? Is it made of some type of conductive material?
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 8 ай бұрын
The adhesive is actually made to be conductive, but it's also just so thin that there's not a measurable gap for high-frequency energy to get in.
