Compressor not working? In this episode of Repair & Replace, Vance shows to troubleshoot the refrigerator compressor and start components. If the compressor is not starting, it could be a problem with the start relay, capacitor or the overload protector. If the compressor is faulty, then the refrigerator will not start and will not cool properly. This video also shows how to test the compressor windings with a multimeter.

Hands down the best video out there on the subject...hitting the notes there with the values regardless should add up...plus you had a variety of relays. Thank you

Thank you for this video. You are a great teacher and love how you show really good angles of what you are doing. I have a personal project this Christmas break and want to repair a mini fridge. Looks like there are only a couple of components so shouldn’t be too hard to narrow it down. I do have a question if you don’t mind, why do overload protectors go bad? I am thinking a spike in current but if that was the case. Could it be that replacing it will lead to the same outcome? Thank you for sharing your insight!

Thanks for watching. An overload can fail if it is repetitively tripped. This can be high temperature or high current. High ambient temperature or restriction in the airflow can cause the compressor to heat up past its normal operating temperature. So it's always best to check the airflow around the fridge. A spike in current is difficult to narrow down but you can still check to make sure that the compressor is not shorted by testing each terminal to the shiny metal of the compressor body as shown at 7:55

thank you for that great video I have a ge profile French door with freezer on the bottom my compressor was making a clicking sound and the compressor would not turn on I replaced the start relay and a new capacitor it lasted a week working normally and now I am getting that clicking sound again in your professional opinion what else can it be thank you in advance

Thanks for watching. Check the overload protector. In some cases this might be tripping and causing that clicking sound. A restriction of airflow could cause the compressor to run hot, so make sure the that condenser coils are clean: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pbadpZmT1NvKnXk.htmlsi=i5s0FO9Oyo8OvFnR&t=267 As well you could check the compressor windings, check for a short and check each start component.

My refrigerator (Samsung RS277ACRS/XAA-0000) stopped working after a power outage. The ohm readings on the compressor are: C-S: 0.4 ohm C-R: 3.4 ohm I was wondering if such a low reading on the start winding is normal for this model. The Start Relay (thermistor, DA35-00135A) was not showing continuity (R = 1300 ohms), so I replaced it. The new one couldn't start the compressor either. When I test the new one, it also does not have continuity (R = 4000 ohms). I do no know if I got a bad start relay, or my compressor is bad and it is just burning the start relays. The overload protector has continuity, and seems to be fine.

Thanks for watching. There are a few notes: Generally the start winding has the lowest resistance. 0.4 ohms seems quite low even for a run winding. Not certain of any models with that rated resistance for the windings. The start relay resistances seem very high, but make sure you are not testing them just after the fridge was running as the resistance increases with temperature. It's also best to check the capacitor to make sure it is good. If those are all still good then it could be a shorted compressor.

Thanks for watching. Do you mean that the compressor starts but shuts off too early? How long does it run for? Is the freezer / fridge too warm?

@@drkoolking9826A problem like that in most cases would be caused by a faulty temperature sensor (thermistor) or cold control thermostat. As well make sure the condenser coils are clean, the evaporator coils are free of ice, and that the fans work. If those are good, then it could be an issue with the compressor & starting components. - the short cycling could be because the overload protector that keeps tripping. This could be caused by a faulty overload protector, relay, capacitor or compressor.

This video is very stupid. Everyone knows the first thing to check when something is not work is to check the power. Check the power going to the compressor first before checking anything else. If no 120V going to the compressor, then no need to check anything else.

Thanks for watching. These videos are structured around troubleshooting, tests and the replacement of individual components. Because of how many homeowners and others are seeking this information, we have made the decision to not do any live voltage testing in these series, so this video is how you would test this in isolated continuity tests. The logic and observation at the beginning still applies as you can determine if there is a call for cooling based on the fans running.
