I do SMT rework during semester breaks at an EMS factory and I really like you videos. In fact, I'm playing with the idea of offering repair/modding services myself. Not for Apple products, but in general. Game consoles maybe. I'm fairly good with tiny ass SMD soldering and hot air rework. But it doesn't matter how many of your videos I watch, I'm always grossed out by the obscene ammount of flux you use on those boards. I love it! :D I tried it too, it works great. It's just disgusting and a mess to clean up when you're working on brand new boards fresh from the reflow oven and you can't just toss them into an ultrasonic.

Referring to the 17 minute mark. Does that syringe use the luer lock connection for the needles? You can get blunt needles of various gauges off Amazon and Ebay, and there's a good chance you can ask a pharmacy or a hardware store with livestock supplies for needles.

Sorry if its idiot question's. I see often syringe flux but without nothing to push the flux in the needle. So what you use to push the flux in the syringe ? Also what is the temperature of your working station ? And what temperature of your iron solder with wick ? Since stencil are expensive (we can't buy all of them) does exist like general stencil we can buy ? Do you think you can clean your stencil in ultrasonic cleaner ? Really appreciate you share your knowledge with us. Share is so rare today and even rich want make sharing criminal. Thanks for all your teaching.

Another great video Louis, I start to think I should try a board fix myself. Question, wich is why I want to try myself: If I have a special board, no laptop motherboard but a special gameconsole board. What would be a reason not to help a customer replace a bga chip that he also provides, offers whatever money you need for it and atleast align it the same way but if the board is bad or chip, doesnt matter. I have some clues but why would most repair shops dont take this risk? "simple" "southbridge" replacement, customer even has the chip from a donor. and it doesnt matter if the replacement doesnt work. (I hope it will, but ill take the risk)

I want to do this just so i can feel the satisfaction on working on my own shit and fix my own stuff, not making money. I'll still buy what you have just to make it work perfectly. Also noticed the balls don't stay stuck to non adhering pads. So good :D Learned couple things xDDDDD Was so used to how everyone else reworks bga parts by throwing balls into stencils 23:25 what is the chip die holder called? Also do you know if the soldering balls are better or the paste overall better in longevity because its a paste and so on other than the benefits of it being easy to apply?

You want stainless steel Leur-Lock dispensing tips.. Not entirely sure which gauge you want, but 18 gauge has some difficulty sucking up VG (Vegetable Glycerin, for my DIY vaping liquids hobby), but can dispense it decently with a bit of force (similar with 20G) - which may be what you want for solder paste. I got all mine via Ebay in packs of 12 for pretty cheap. For reference.... I think 8 gauge is the widest available -- and also practically all, if not all, syringes are Leur-Lock or Leur-Slip, with both being the same size and all, but the 'Lock' version has the screw-type connection points to, well, lock it in. :) To cover your initial bases, I'd probably try a pack each of 16, 18, and 20 gauge - they're cheap enough (~$6-8 each).

Is the card-reader easy to build out and in, or is it a solid part of the mother board, means, it's not that easy to replace it?Thanks for your answer.

Hi Louis, thanks for your answer. I got the Mac from my brother-in-law (a very heavy smoker!) and the card reader was simply as dirty as hell. So I took an old SD-Card, a very thin but strong piece of my wife's old shirt, wrapped around the card, took some alcohol (as you always suggest) and push the card into the reader (nothing to lose should I break the reader...). I repeated the action 4 times and: success!! So as you said: ...something but the card reader, you're right. Thanks for your help!

The mother of my friend was back in the day a home worker for an electronics manufacturer. Her job was to assemble little coils onto a core and attach the wires to the throuh hole leads. The company gave her a little pot with integrated heater, where she melted the solder (Pb) and diped those prepared coils in order to solder them. She was very fond of her work, because she got payed per pice. Now the woman has throat cancer, have got her larynx removed. And out there someware lives happily her former boss who is responsible for all this.

Heh... that's the second time I've seen something get sucked up into your airfilter. At the risk of belabouring the obvious... have you thought about putting some screen mesh, like window screen material, over the intake nozzle of your filter system? Anyhow, great video as usual. I couldn't tell if the audio was still not synching properly on this one. ETA: Yep, audio is slightly out of synch. This is obvious at the end of the video.

+TinselKoala The mesh gets owned quickly. I'm not sure how exactly, but it never lasts long. When the mesh was there, it wasn't fine enough to keep the tiny things from getting sucked into the air filter.

It strikes me that these stencils you could get manufactured from a local machine shop. Chances are they'd be able to make a little jig for you to fix the chip and the stencil in the correct position, too. Should be child's play for them. Just give them a pattern or a 1:1 photo, and you should be set.

LMAO! "I tried to convince them to sell it in these..." Like he's got so much pull with the manufacturer that they made a special size for him. This size of tube has been on eBay for years. Very classy, trash-talking the competition, as well. I do appreciate the tutorial, though. I ended up liking the tutorial, despite my initial comments. Thank you, sir.

You'd be surprised at how easy it is to deal with US manufacturers in this way! Especially if you're willing to provide/deliver the cartridges. SMT used to provide their AMTECH 4300 series pastes to Howard Electronics in 10CC syringes many years ago, it's likely that they still have the facilities to fill these types of cartridges but they don't normally offer them as a product for purchase Another case; I was able to obtain consent from a US plating manufacturer to resell their plating chemicals in small vials for hobbyist use, even with my own label attached to the vials; I barely buy a few hundred dollars worth of gear from them a year!

PodeCoet In the United States, you have a legal rights to resell most things under your own imprint, without consideration of the company you buy it from. Chemicals are not particularly protected, unless you need licenses or permits to handle or transfer them. It just isn't economical to deal with US manufacturers when the chemicals are dug out of the ground in China or India, processed there, and shipped to my business cheaper per kg in small quantities than I would pay a US company for the same in bulk, since they are sourcing it from the same people.

Not 100% sure but your syringe tube might be from an inkjet cartridge refill bottle ! Here in the UK we can cheapskate it and buy little bottles of ink to refill the colour cartridges on our printer and save a little money. The bottles come with these long narrow tubes. for pushing down into the cartridge. You then squeeze the bottle to force the new ink into the old cartridge. It works for one or two refills before the insides fuck up completely and you need a new cartridge.

excuse my ignorance but why isn't it possible to test an smc by just pushing it on the board? like why is it necessary to solder on the smc before testing it. thanks

18:10 This might be totally not relevant anymore 2 years later but a lot of these thingies are easily sourced via aliexpress. Just smash in some keywords that might match what you are searching for. Standards in china work a little different, usually its just the right mixture of keywords that define an item. No DIN standards or stuff like that. Needles for syringes f.e. are usually the same and you just search for dispensing needle and get a f* ton of different needles that will likely all fit any of your syringes nicely. Same goes with other parts.

Perhaps you could tape a small section of nylon screen in front of your air intake with duct tape. That would prevent things getting sucked in the intake. That said, I laughed out loud when that happened. It's the second thing I have seen fly up that tube.
