Amtrak Train Derailment: Animated Explainer of the Accident

JOPLIN, MONTANA - At least three people were killed and 50 were injured after Amtrak’s westbound Empire Builder train derailed in Montana at 4 p.m. Saturday, September 25, but the cause is still unknown.
The Associated Press spoke to David Clarke, director of the Center for Transportation Research at the University of Tennessee, who noted that the derailment occurred at or near a switch, where the railway goes from a single to a double track.
The two locomotives and two cars at the front of the train reached the split and continued onwards, though one passenger reported being thrown around inside.
However, the eight cars behind those cars all derailed, and Clarke suggests “it might have been that the front of the train hit the switch and it started fish-tailing and that flipped the back part of the train.” The New York Times spoke to one expert who summarized the general direction any investigation might take, explaining that right now the incident does not appear to be human error, and thus it is likely “something broke.”

Finally the animation is right and there is not just a random locomotive pulling the front of the train like a sd70mac or the P42DC just pulling random passengers cars Hello to my fellow Railroad and train enthusiasts, I've been quite crazy over Things like this from those years, But now I have a more positive Mindset.

Ok the turnout or switch has nothing to do with the derailment the train was on the ground long before then. 2. The stretch of track was inspected by the BNSF track teams on Thursday and the train hit the ground on Saturday. 3. The last three cars did not just tip on there side if you look at the overhead photos the wheels are pointing away from the tracks almost like the cars rolled over the roof and landed on the left side of the cars. 4. The each train goes through a complete inspection before it leaves Chicago and Seattle. So if it is a issue with the train then the team that inspected the train didn't do there job. 5. The train was not speeding it was slower then the speed the train is allowed to travel. At this point BNSF and Amtrak both did what they where supposed to do to guarantee a smooth and safe trip, nothing really makes sense in the crash. The NTSB and the FRA are trying to figure what happened. I have thought on more then one occasion that this could be an intentional act by a person or group. This would not be the first time sabotage brought down a passenger.

My brother said that he had a dream the day before the crash saying that a train was going to crash the next day (and it did). My brother keeps having these about the future and is freaking out.

I actually nearly saw another Amtrak accident, where a truck pulled in front of the Sunset Limited just 3 seconds before it crossed the crossing.

Your animation does not reflect the speed of the train. Those last 3 cars could not have simply stopped, especially that fast, and then tipped over. Also I'd like to know how a train could fishtail.. This is incredibly misleading.

Yes, but it doesn't matter where you sit on a train you could still get hurt or killed. In this case the last car of the train was the Portland sleeper and is where all 3 fatalities where

I say put more money into hyperloop these tracks seem to be giving us more problems than the trains if this keeps happenening then we need to totally redo our train system while we keep doing more data on hyperloop

This wasn't on Amtrak's rails. This was on a freight line that Amtrak has trackage rights to. If it was track maintenance then the blame probably wouldn't fall on Amtrak.
