This game features an absolutely stunning "king hunt". The opening is a Sicilian Defence. It is arguably one of the greatest "immortal games" seen on a Chessboard. It was played by the young Chinese super-prodigy Wei Yi who was 16 years old at the time of this game. His opponent is the Cuban No.2 GM . An absolutely insane immortal chess game by Wei Yi ! - "Game of the Decade" is Susan Polgar's tweet!
Who is Wei Yi ?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wei_Yi
Wei Yi (born 2 June 1999) is a Chinese chess grandmaster and chess prodigy.
Wei became a grandmaster at the age of 13 years, 8 months and 23 days, the fifth youngest in history.[2][3] He is the youngest player ever to reach a rating of 2700, accomplishing this feat at age 15.[4][5] Wei represents the Jiangsu club in the China Chess League.[6]
Career
Early years
In 2007, he competed in the Chinese Chess Championship B group at the age of 8, recording a draw against Grandmaster Zhou Jianchao.[7]
In 2009, Wei Yi won the under 11 section of the 5th World School Chess Championship, held in Thessaloniki, Greece.[8]
In 2010, he won the under-12 event at the Asian Youth Chess Championship[9] and followed this up by winning the same division at the World Youth Chess Championship.[10]
2012
In August, he won his first GM norm at the World Junior Chess Championship in Athens, including a victory over Richárd Rapport and a draw with the eventual winner Alexander Ipatov;[11] when Wei was only 12. The competition is open to participants under-20 at 1 January.
In October, he gained his second GM norm at the Indonesian Open Chess Championship, with victories over Michal Krasenkow and Sergey Fedorchuk.[12]
2013
In February, he secured his final norm at the Reykjavik Open with a score of 7½/10, including a victory over Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, finishing 6th.[13]
In August, he made his debut at the FIDE World Cup, held that year in Tromsø, being one of the FIDE president's nominees. He defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi in the first round and Alexei Shirov in the second, then was knocked out by Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the third round.[14]
On the November FIDE rating list, Wei, aged 14 years, four months and 30 days, reached a rating of 2604, thus becoming the youngest player in history to achieve a rating above 2600, breaking the record held by Wesley So.[7] This record has since been broken by John M. Burke.
2014
In June, Wei won the 27th Magistral de León rapid tournament by defeating Francisco Vallejo Pons in the final.[15]

Good job putting together an analysis so soon after the event. It's good to see that GM games can still be as exciting as in older times. A lot of GM games nowadays have moves with positional gains so infinitesimal that, while often brilliant, we'd have to be just as brilliant to appreciate them.

You know, when you show a video and you give us 5 seconds to find the genius move, I automatically go looking for what would initially be considered outrageous, and I find that I'm about 50/50. In this game though, I had immediately started to calculate the rook sack before given a moment to think. The same thing happened for Be4 keeping the king from running. The amazing moment for me was the move that wasn't played: Rxf7, Kf6, Qe6!! just slamming the Queen down in the center and making the defense look like cartoonish swiss cheese! I have to say that the fact is that Wei didn't calculate this all of the way through, just finding the correct (and sometimes the only) continuation to the attack, and that Batista felt that he needed to protect his queen more importantly. lol. Great Vid!

Larry Hoffman Yes, you should see the film "Good will hunting" with Matt Daemon. When I give you 5 seconds to find a genius move, I am asking you to step out of our mundane life and routine thinking habits. A particular scene in Good will hunting is when his friend really hoped he wouldn't be there for collection in the morning. We each do something mundane each and every day. We need that escape to something better and more exciting. In our chess thinking we can come routine and boring too - it is nice to check out "immortal games" to give us a glimpse of something amazing and wonderful - to break the monotony of routine existence or thinking. It is no coincidence that you are 50/50 when thinking of outrageous stuff - I am glad you get a glimpse of something you would not normally.

kingscrusher This example of sustaining the initiative of an attack when down on material is philosophically inspiring. Most people do not have all the resources they desire to do what they will in life. Being self aware of the strengths we do have and actively playing those strengths against physically daunting odds is an essential part of living well. Being willing to break routine patterns in order to actively leverage our strengths in life is a vital part of the heart of human excellence. One of the things I love about chess is that it is complex enough to illustrate important principles for living.

At 14:15, when going through a possible variation (with the Black king on h5), the commentator suggests that there's "nothing here". However, it appears that Rf5+! is winning (the rook cannot be captured by the g-pawn due to it being pinned by the Queen) and it seems that the attack then crashes through :)

I always wonder what the rooks are thinking (if they could) every time their king gets hunted to the other side of the board while they calmly guard the pawns. It's almost like they are traitors whose only job was to obstruct their own king till he is forced to march up to his own death.
@60xFPS
@60xFPS 9 жыл бұрын
Urza26 I always imagined that, if a chessboard were translated into a real life landscape, it would be massive, and the king gives orders from his own base. Each piece/pawn would be a marching army over a large distance. My point is, that in my own little world, the rooks can't see the king, they just stop receiving orders one day lol

Qe1 is totally a "Naked Weapon" used by White against Sicilian and often result to dramatic frustration from black's corner. Its a treat against Fiancietto due to some circumstances. After follows up random play of white f4, then Qe1, there are dangerous followup position for white such us Re3 & Qg3 charging in front of Black's King. Also don;t forget the Bishops too waiting for maneuver attack. Its a REAL deal for black to take sometime how to deal with so many Threat within the kings corner.

At 23:44, could white have played rook takes bishop? That threatens mate with the rook at h4. So black only has 3 options: 1- Take the rook with the pawn (mate with Queen e6) 2- Rook h8, which allows white to check with the rook at f3 3- Give a check with the black queen at a7, then white plays King h1, another check with the black queen at b7, and a block of the check with rook f3+. So neither option stops white from giving a check with rook f3! And the corresponding forced mate. Is this correct?

The reason the engine was not "excited" about Nd5 is because it saw a defence in Bxd5 (not because in the ensuing king hunt combination it overlooked Be4+, as kingcrusher was suggesting. (The computer doesn't overlook much)) As soon as black took with the knight (Nxd5) instead of with the bishop, the computer immediately saw the path to victory

I wonder whether this kind of king hunt tactic could be done in any game for white basically using the extra move to force this kind of unstoppable forced position. Might be a interesting problem to set the engines, I.E is there a set opening that could always force this or leave black positionally weakened. "The king hunt gambit" lol.

Andrew Barta I also thought about it, but if he takes the queen his attack basically stops. He is a rook and a bishop down so any weakness in the attack will probably lose him the game.

Andrew Barta According Chessbomb's computer, (Stockfish), Bb6+ would have been -1.91, i.e. a losing move. White is already a rook & a bishop down, & winning the queen for the bishop isn't enough; if his attack weakens, he will lose.

Im sure had he calculated and played the mysterious-looking silent killer c4!! we could call this game of the century. Anyway, In Kasparov vs Topalov the sac is the spectacular move, and it has some brilliant sacrifice followups, but he regains material in the end; Here it doesn't get materialistic at all. Just sac, sac, then all silent killer forcing moves. At no point he can regain material back (and of course noone should go for it) and he doesn't. Its a do-or-die attack. Its a silent immortal game which even included black had mate in 1 chances. Amazing. How many times did the black king move? jajaja he danced around the board.

A Purvere I wonder the same, because once KC stopped that position and asked for the best move I also thought it had to be Rxf7. Also most of the follow-up was quite clear to guess once the position was reached, but at the initial position it is hard to say, if not impossible

Goe Giering Being able to guess what the move is on the follow up each time means nothing. We are all privy to the information that this is an immortal game. We know there is a winning line. The moment KC says "guess the move" we know it's going to be a spectacular move. Wei Yi was not privy to any of this. I am 100% sure Wei Yi knew how this game would end, either on hard calculation or intuition. A GM is simply not going to sacrifice a rook on a hunch and hope it's a winning line.

LetalisLatrodectus Actually you just repeated my thoughts, weren`t you? However, Rxf7 really looks promising, I might have considered playing it as well even though it is beyond my ability to calculate it to the end. But neither are my opponents I regularly play. Doing so against a GM is, of course, a different story

Goe Giering A GM can't sacrifice a whole rook just because it "looks promising" and neither should you. I didn't repeat your thoughts, I answered your question. This was calculated. Period.

Hmm, but how do you know? I have read books of GM`s where all they talk about is their intuition. What I mean is, of course they calculate a lot, but also their intuition is way beyond the one of a regular player. For example, if you say "A GM can't sacrifice a whole rook just because it "looks promising" and neither should you", I do not share this opinion. Maybe for the GM part, but even there I am sure, there are GM`s which occasionally sacrificed material out of intuition without calculating in detail. There are a lot of sources of this. And then for the part of a regular player: If they should only sacrifice if they can calculate until the end, this seems difficult to me. In my opinion it all depends more or less on intuition, since forcing game-ending sacrifices are usually just basic tactics. To beat stronger players it takes more risky play, if you try to win in a tactical manner (that is at least my experience). Maybe you prefer more positional play than me and thus have a different view on this topic. Anyway, thanks for the discussion. I would appreciate more opinions on this question

+Jake Corbett Wei Yi world champion before age 20, surely? He is truly living up to the Chinese spirit of great calculation and ability at such a young age. He makes Bobby Fischer look very weak. Simply amazing.

The Anti-Theist I dunno about before 20 years old, but my god would that be incredible if he pulled it off. I'm not doubting he'll find himself as champion at some point though, it does seem pretty probable.

Nice review of the game. What I liked about this play the most, was white forcing the black king to essentially go on his own suicide mission deep into enemy territory -- whether he liked it or not!

Bishop to B6 at 14:40, checking the king and queen simultaneously. Game over, unless I'm missing something.

John Theos If you play Bb6 and then capture the black queen, black in turn captures the white queen with Rxf7.

I just checked this on an engine, it's because it's black's turn to move and when black moves the bishop, the white Queen is under attack by black rook. So even if white bishop takes black Queen, white Queen will be lost and black has a better game (better position).
