This round 2 game from the 6th annual "Rural Credit Cup" held in Danzhou, China easily makes the list of best chess games ever played. 16-year-old super talent Wei Yi of China plays white against Lázaro Bruzón Batista of Cuba. The chess game was played on July 3rd, 2015 and it has already been pegged by many akin a "21st Century Immortal Game", and some reaching as far as a "Game of the Century". This is truly one masterpiece of a game. Wei Yi plays white against Lázaro Bruzón's Sicilian, Classical Scheveningen where play follows theory until move 21. It is not long after that Wei Yi lures Lázaro Bruzón's king straight to the center where a blend of sacrifices to buy time, and successive quiet moves leave the black king position perilous. The meteoric rise of Wei Yi continues to impress the chess world, and talk has already surfaced about him being the future rival to the current world chess champion Magnus Carlsen.

Jake Corbett I Disagree. If Wei was so efficient why not just simply play 26 B-B6+ and destroy black immediately? No need to go on a king hunt at that point.

Such a simple and innocent Rook move which would be ignored at the club level raises this game to the super level of chess to be fully admired. It was this kind of ordinary and innocent sacrifices for which the Great Russian World Chess Champion, Mikhail Tal was famous for. Now this super Chinese Player is to replace M. Tal and take the cue from him to carry on the great work of artistical chess artwork in the modern tournament. Fantastic game. It had to be fantastic if it was played and talked about on BBC flagship programme Today when Dominic Lawson gave his approval for the uniqueness of this game. I cannot believe that we do not have any great talent in this great country of ours, United Kingdom, to produce a great chess player of the likes of Wei YI. There has to one. Like lawn tennis it is a class system which is thwarting our talent at the club level and are not given the chance to display their talent in public. Like the Chinese Chess Federation we must support our chess at base level to encourage and promote chess to be able to produce great chess talents of the future. We are great coaches and teachers but then we stop at the cross road when it really matters. Support chess in UK and the benefits are great for all to enjoy.

10:52 is a moment of pause for sure. Even though you could just checkmate your opponent as white, even Bb6+, winning the Queen with the discovered check leaves white with a Rook and Queen vs 2 Rooks and 2 Bisshops, which is somewhat equal. So even if this was played by someone who couldn't find the mate idea, this could still theoretically be viable. It's also fun to see that winning the Queen is not the best possible thing you could do, which is really instructive for newer players.

Great commentary and amazing game! Sure we get a little enamored with king hunts--probably not "game of the century" but Wei shows a great talent and forces the action (is completely winning after Rxf7 but still delivers the goods throughout) even though Bruzon does NOT blunder the whole game, despite what a couple stubborn novices married to their engines say : ) Would love to see an interview w Yi to see what his thought processes were and how much was home prep.

ienjoyapples How are Wang Yue, Wang Hao, Li Chao B(current rating 2740+), Ding Liren(current rating 2750+), Wei Yi(2720+ and 15-16 years old), Yu Yangyi(current rating 2730+, and has won strongest open in history, Qatar Masters, and just last week Capablanca memorial), or Hou Yifan(multiple time womens world champ and current highest rated woman player EVER) not considered 'world elites' or part of the world elite? 2700+ is world elite, and i'd say 2650 and womens world champ qualifies you as world elite also if not the best in the world(for your gender). The chinese simply don't stay interested in chess for very long compared to other countries/career players. They are also studying at university while having a professional chess career, so after they finish Uni and/or grow abit older and mature into adults, they will find another career or interest, or lose interest in chess. It doesn't mean they are any less talented or hard working as any other player. In fact, their young players are pretty much the best in the world at the moment. They are the reigning olympic and world chess team champions.
@ienjoyapples
@ienjoyapples 9 жыл бұрын
***** By elite I mean world championship contenders, regular players in the supertournament circuit, etc. As far as I know there hasn't been a Chinese player in a candidates tournament. I'm not saying they don't have talented players, but they have yet to produce a super star like Anand, Carlsen, and the other top super GMs. Hopefully Wei Yi will put an end to that!
@ex0duzz
@ex0duzz 9 жыл бұрын
ienjoyapples You aren't just talking about elite players.. you mentioned the last 2 WC's! Mentioning Anand is almost the same as saying China hasn't produced someone like Kasparov.. And Carlsen? Who has produced a Carlsen? no one. He's one of a kind obviously. For now. But like you said, hopefully one of the young chinese elites can challenge Carlsen for the title. And i think Wang Yue and Wang Hao have both played in some Grand Prix Tournaments and have played in some super tourneys, just not as active as they used to be when they were rated a bit higher(like 2750~ vs 2710~ etc). Now it's Ding Liren, Yu Yangyi, Wei Yi and Li Chao B(current rating 2740+) time to shine, while the Wang's recover their rating if they want more invites to supertourneys.

Hey, Jerry. Nice analysis, but I think you should have mentioned Nf6 (instead of KxR), which retreats the extra knight and defends against the mate threat, that is, not such an obvious line. White's winning response is Qe6, threatening double checks and everything, which leads to massive material loss for black to avoid mate.

@7:10 why not the move bishop b6? It's a discovery check and also attacks the black queen
@ex0duzz
@ex0duzz 9 жыл бұрын
Rewop A queen is not enough at that point. You are not going after material, you are going for the kill. You're all in by this point. If you trade bishop for queen, you would be left with Queen+Rook vs 2 Rooks and 2 Bishops. You are down on material and would most likely lose unless you can give perpetual or something. One of his 4 pieces can defend vs your Queen+Rook battery, and the other 3 pieces can attack at will. You will be lost.

At 7:10 when Jerry says that "this is what makes this so special" I paused the video I tried to figure out the amazing move, i didn't even consider Qf7, yet I saw c4 which I think is also a mate, quicker then Wei Yi 's (however I did have board to play through my moves through against my opponent and unlimited time with no pressure) Here's the line from 7:10 in the video- If 1. c4 bxc4 then 2. Qxg6+ Kd5 3. Qf7+ Ke4 (Kc6, Qxc4#) 4. Qxc4+ Kf5 5. Rf1+ Bf3 (only move) 6. Rxf3 Kg6 7. Qxf7# :D Im completely open to criticism to see if i'm wrong. Now if they don't take the pawn-(two options Kf5 or Kd3, any other move gets mated very quickly after Qxg6) 1. c4 Kf5 then 2. Rf1+ Ke4 (Ke6, Qh3#) (Kg4, Qh4#) 3. Bg1!! Kd3! (Only move since Rg8 fails to Qh3!! where mate is unstoppable on either e3 or f3!) 4. Qh3!!+ Kxc4 (Ke4, Qe3#) (Ke2, Qe3!+, Kxf1, Qg2#) (Kd2, Qc3+, Ke2, Re1#) (Kc2, Qc3#) 5. Qc3+ Kd5 6. Qb3+ Ke4 7. Qf3# 7 moves again! So Kd3- 1. c4 Kd3 2. Qxg6+ Be4 3. Rd1+! Kc2 (Kxe3, Qg3+, Ke2, Qe1#) (Ke2, Qg4+ Kxe3 same as before) 4. Qxe4+ Kb3 5. Qd3+ Ka2 (Ka4, Qc2+, Ka5, B4!!# who would have thought!?) 6. Qb1+ Kb2 7. Rd3+ Ka4 (Kxc4 then Qc2# is mate.) 8. Qc2+ Ka5 9.b4# Simply amazing who would have guessed? Absolutely crazy game by Wei Yi especially when you look in too the insane amount of mate threats available! Please look into my line, Im sure somebody will find a mistake with an engine or something, but regardless I think it's pretty sound. It would be really awesome if Jerry could look into this line for me. Thanks :)
