I do not want to burst your bubble re: convenience store woman, it’s a great book, just some extra info: the main character in the book is portrayed like someone with autism for whom the order of the store is actual paradise but societal pressure builds around her for her to “want more in life”. No review of this book talks about her autism which I find highly strange because if you miss that you miss at least half of what the story is about. The book makes some really important commentary about what it means to navigate a neurotypical world with a neurodiverse brain.
@randompikmin4103
@randompikmin4103 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I feel like she has a bit of a wrong impression of the book lol. I also can't believe I didn't get that she was autistic-coded, I just thought she lacked empathy or something, but now that I think about it, that's a common symptom of autism lol. Knowing a bit about Japanese culture and the attitude of "The needle that stands out must be hammered down" I think are really beneficial if you want to read the book too. It explains why the characters act the way they do in the book.

I wish you luck with "The Couple Next Door." I read it a few months back because someone recommended it and it sounded super intriguing but it wound up being one of the most mind-numbingly ridiculous books I've picked up in a long time. At one point one of the main characters' old English teacher is interviewed and is described as "looking exactly like how you would expect an English teacher to look." They showed up for one scene, contributed nothing, and was one of many annoyingly bland and pointless moments in that book lol

It's in dialect so you couldn't really learn Italian from it but I thought it would be fitting to recommend since you reside there now! It's a show and a series of books. If you're into depressing feminist works like Promising Young Woman, Tess of the D'urbervilles, A Thousand Splendid Suns you'll def love this.

Omg I would love to hear what you think about Beach Read and People We Meet On Vacation. I thought the researching trips were boring, and the conflict near the end felt forced. And I thought the latter just felt too long and had too many flashbacks. Sorry for being so negative 💀 Low-key I hope you feel the same way because I always laugh when you hate a book! Oh and my perfect Beach Read book would be Flipped or Aristotle and Dante... Because the former is very succinct, sweet, and simple. The writing is easily digestible. And the other one has descriptions of swimming and the pool. "Water was something he loved, something he respected. He understood its beauty and its dangers. He talked about swimming as if it were a way of life. Who is this guy?"

I think of The Ruins by Scott Smith. The characters are all the worst kinds of people but because they were so flawed and unlikable, it made what happened more interesting. It was a book that I didn't like at first but after I finished it and had some time to think I bumped my rating up on goodreads.
