For someone who loves the series you don’t seem to understand it at all and I’m happy I watched the series before I stumbled upon your videos.

Locke is a sad character that endured personal tragedy after tragedy. Until he was murdered and used as a pawn in a nefarious end of the world plot. That's not the archetype for a villain.
@drizzle4524 жыл бұрын
Yea, I agree. He was in the mold of a cult member or the “useful idiot” of the Russian revolution. He was made a fool repeatedly throughout his life and history was destined to repeat itself with him. Locke was manipulated by evil, but not seduced.
@drakenfist3 жыл бұрын
The irony is so was the man in black. He was manipulated by "mother" in to that form cause she didn't want the job. She conned him into killing her by killing those people. Locke was set up by the island to be MIB's pawn so that Jacob could take down the MIB. When Locke was a kid, he drew a picture of a bald man being taken over by a pillar of smoke. The island was sending him dreams of his own death as a kid.

idk if it was for the sake of being sarcastic or funny but a major part of what you said in this video is just wrong. since the very first night after the survivors crashed, the monster kinda "arrived" saying "I'm here" ,to make em feel unsafe and uneasy. to best get advantage of them, to trick them and to probe them properly one by one. to see whose best for his plan to get out. i thought that was pretty obvious by now. Another thing. the plot, the characters ,good sense and the MIB himself stated multiple times that if it was easy, he would have gone off the island by his own foot. i also thought that was pretty obvious. he can't move through large bodies of water. he actually says this to sawyer once,regarding needing a boat to go to the hydra island. And,his probably "bound" to the island, like in many ways jacob is,and mother was. until all that mother/jacob plan is done. FInally,No he can't kill him, mother said so. He actually says to jacob during a game of Senet that one day he (jacob) could make his own game and his own rules (hence the this whole plot) ,and all jacobs rules. i think he still won tho.
@bettystroh65043 жыл бұрын
He (Smokey) didn’t kill Locke because he couldn’t. Locke was a candidate. When He became Locke he became a candidate which protected him and gave him the loophole he needed to enact his plan. His long con.

Its interesting to compare the smoke monster with the Game of Thrones (tv not book) white walkers. I think they had a similar narrative issue; of being used primarily as a plot device, with no real thought put into their own narrative arc, until it was too late
@badgasaurus42115 жыл бұрын
Chris Sewell well, they never even tried with the white walkers

That Jacob character always pissed me off. I simpathyzed more with the black shirt guy. And hated the idea of him being the black smoke. The black smoke being a wild raging nanobot swarm security system sounded like a better idea

I believe they were making most of it up as they went along. It wasn't until around end of season 3 (when they decided to end the show after season 6 and told ABC that) that they had a good idea of the ending. The reason they couldn't go back and make the smoke monster make sense in light of all we'd been shown in seasons 1 and 2, say, is that there was too much conflicting info around it. They made up new shit for it and there you have season 6. Were there other ways to handle it? Sure. But that's the way they chose. Also, regarding people liking to feel smart and figure shit out before the show makes it 100% clear... sure. But people also complain if it's too easy to figure out the major twists of a show or movie, too. And for every person who figured out Mr. Robot season 1 on their own, there was another person who only figured it out because they read the first guy posting on reddit... and another person who didn't figure it out and felt stupid at the end of the season... and another person who didn't binge the show until a year or two later and had been spoiled before they even watched the pilot. The main reason people aren't happy is if it feels the like the writers had to deus ex machina way too often to get things to wrap up in a satisfying manner. That is one of the main complaints I hear about LOST. But with how much they'd set up in those first few huge seasons, it's not too surprising that this was the case in the much shorter final seasons. It is impossible to please every viewer. See: endings of LOST, Battlestar Galactica, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, etc. etc. etc. LOST's showrunners did a decent job up to and including much of (but not all of) season 6 for a majority of viewers. And their season 6 job wasn't horrible. I was fine with it. Even though you said you were fine with it back in part 1 of your analysis of LOST, I'm not sure that you really were based on later statements. But that's fine, too. Can't please everybody all the time. Not even most of the time. ;)

Smoke monster/Cerberus was a gaurd dog...so to speak. When the man in black died he either merged with it or co opted it. And now he uses it to travel around etc. His mom even used it to kill all the dudes digging wells with her son. Then it was still a security system. When he was chucked into the pit it did it's job and threw him back out, butin that moment of weakness from Jacob, they merged because his mom made it so they can't hurt each other. Until smokie foundhislokphole.hope that made sense and helps.

I'm not sure if it was intended that way, but when you said that the smoke monster could turn into animals, there was a scene shown with the black horse that Sawyer and Kate saw. Isn't the horse from Mikhail's farm?

The monster didnt 'stand in' for Anubis. Hes depicted in the mural opposite Anubis. The Egyptians obviously identified he was able to take the form of the dead and associated him with Anubis. By the looks of the mural they thought he was a servant of Anubis judging the living

The main issue is: why does Ben think the Smoke Monster is a judge? When he doesnt even know what it is at all? And when he summoned it the season before? Then in S6 The Others all think hes 'evil incarnate'. Its very convoluted.
@juanitajones69008 ай бұрын
It was Dogen and his aide who believed the MIB was evil incarnate. Jacob had specifically recruited Dogwn. He never recruited Ben. And the latter had never met him until late Season 5.

The only real question surrounding the Smoke Monster that wasn't given any real answer was why Jacob's brother's body caused the Smoke Monster to be created or released to begin with. The other questions raised in this video have plausible explanations. - Smoke Monster = Evil Incarnate that has always wanted to infect everything and everyone on the entire planet, so it has always wanted to "leave" the island...it's not just that Jacob's brother wanted to. But the island acted as a "cork" to keep that evil in place and in check. So to actuallly leave the island the Smoke Monster would have to disable (for lack of a better word) the protections the island has in place. Jacob put in place the reality that the Smoke monster could not kill the island's protrector--or any of the candidates for that position. - Smoke Monster couldn't just tell someone to kill Jacob--it was damn near impossible for anyone to even find or see Jacob, nonetheless kill him. I don't think it was until Ilana's crew arrived in season six that anyone knew where to find him. Plus, the Smoke Monster knew that Ben had the inner turmoil and anger towards Jacob to actually kill Jacob--remember, Smokey tried to get Richard to kill him and Richard did indeed try. We see how well that worked out lol. Killing Jacob required more than just fooling someone into doing it...it had to be the right "someone", and Ben was probably the only character who would have qualified. - Why did the Smoke Monster feel he needed to take Locke's body shape? In order to manipulate Ben, the guy who killed the real Locke. Ben's guilt allowed him to be manipulated--guilt over killing Locke and guilt over allowing Alex to be killed. And during Ben's "judgement" the Smoke Monster took Alex's form and told Ben he HAD to do whatever John Locke says--basically Smokey told Ben "You have to do what I say" only Ben didn't know it at the time.

When I was watching your analysis of lost I thought you had it figured out quiet well. So thank you for the videos. However, I think you can develop an idea of what the smoke monster is and why it found Locke so special and what the characters of Locke, The Smoke Monster, the horse and MIB had in common by thinking about what unites them in being told what they can and cannot do and what it made to their characters. The end is that the MIB could not leave the island and in Westworld he could not find the answer ... accepting what you can and cannot do or know is very human.

Dude.... your LOST breakdowns are epic!!! I just finished the show again for what must be the 7th or 8th time. You have some pretty amazing insights and almost made me die of laughter AND frustration with your obvious options for the smoke monster to have Jacob killed LOL

I was kind of disappointed when they revealed the ''Monster''. I was really hoping they would keep the Mystery about it going only showing the moving trees or from its point of view, which would have been way better then what they did with it.

MIB can't be seemed like anyone who killed or who died in the island, He just can be seem as a dead body which came to the island after it's death. So the 5 ways the MIB could have gotten off the island at anytime really are senseless

I just thought it was like a grapple robot (because of the noise) covered in smoke to mess with the state of mind of our people so that dharma could do their tests and analysis...I remember thinking dharma was looking for cures and shit and learning more about humans through doing these horrible things to random people from plane crashes that they cause...good times

Black Smoke is an allusion to hell creatures from movie GHOST, the one that pull dead bad criminal guy to hell. I think that what Black Smoke's job is - to judge and to kill really bad sinned characters like Mr Eco. Even though they all got good and evil in them in about same amount and Island gave them the second chance to prove themselves good and make good choice helping other survivors etc. Black Smoke can not kill good guys like Jack and so he helpes/uses them in his game with Jacob like chess figures.

The Prestige did not have a simple solution at all. I hated that film because it wasn’t just a clever magic trick with a double, it had something to do with Tesla who built a machine with which he copied his twin every night and that copy then drowned during the trick. It was a terribly unfair conclusion to a good buildup.

Smoke did not kill jk cause the smoke monster saw he could get jk to help him leave the island, sm spare echo because the sm thought he could echo to leave, than later killed mr echo cause echo's arc that saw that mr echo could no longer help the sm leave the island, soild clues imo

I really appreciate that you took the time to make these videos but going over them I simply do not agree with your take on the overall structure/setup of the story and how everything fits (or according to you does not fit) together. It is clear that the purpose of the smoke monster has changed over time. But I've also started rewatching the entire series and actually I was surprised how well it holds up all things considered. You go a bit overboard in saying "The MiB could just do X and get off the island easily" and give the 4 reasons that might just work but would not make for very good story stelling or a fun show. Also there are some clearly estasblished (somewhat overly complicated) "rules" for Jacob and MiB to follow. That can be criticized and it does point to an overly complex plot, but still it DOES hold up if you follow along. In all your videos you make your own assumptions (Locke was bad from the start, but this has changed etc) that I think says a lot about how you retroactively viewed the show and it's themes. Which is absolutely fine, and Lost was by no means perfect, but I do respecfully disagree with most of your takes across your videos :-)
