An Ant War Broke Out After Adding Water Beasts into My Giant Rainforest Vivarium

In my giant cloud rainforest vivarium, I call Pantdora, an unexpected revival of an ant war broke out, after adding a team of aquatic creatures to the pond. I was shocked to discover the truth about relations between three existing ant colonies within the vivarium, and watched an intense showdown of ants take place. It opened my eyes to the chilling realities of invasive vs native animal wars that occur in ecosystems, as they compete for resources, food, and space. Hope you enjoy Part 8 of our Ecosystem Vivarium Series. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

I wouldn't worry about the toxins from dart frogs unless you are planning to eat them, or lick you hands after handing them. Also, nobody to my knowledge has managed to simulate their diet well enough to allow them to synthesize their toxins in captivity.

A radical last ditch mitigation for the Black Crazy Ants. If they are getting out of control and start moving again, you could make of yourself a predator and grab and remove the queens as they trail to a new nest. The chances of this method allowing you to get them all would be almost nonexistent, and the reduced queens would result in lower colony numbers and potentially allow the native ants to compete on level ground with them.

Unless you can find a predator to specifically target the crazy ants and mostly ignore all the others, then your best bet is probably to just remove them somehow. At this rate they're just going to take over the entire place and you'll have none of the smaller insects left. The only bad thing about most predators you could add, is that they'll eat the other little bugs as well. You need something that would specialize in crazy ants specifically.

Hola Mikey! Pantdora is absolutely incredible. We can all tell you've put a lot of love into this and care so deeply about what it means to have balance in an ecosystem. I'd like to clarify what you said about dart frogs. I've kept golden poison frogs in the past. In the wild, this is the species from Colombia known as the most poisonous creature on the planet. However in captivity, it along with other dart frogs are harmless unless you give them their exact diet in the wild. While they do get their poison from ants, the dart frogs wouldn't develop this poison from the black crazy ants. And the great thing about golden poison frogs is how vocal they are! Out of the dart frogs, they are the most vocal! So they're a great addition to any vivarium. In the wild, these frogs are no joke! The golden poison frog produces deadly alkaloid batrachotoxins in their skin glands as a defense against predators. A single frog has enough for ten humans or 20,000 mice. Golden poison frogs are a very important frog to the local indigenous cultures, such as the Emberá and Cofán people in southern Colombia. The frog is the main source of the poison in the darts used by the natives to hunt. The Emberá people carefully expose the frog to the heat of a fire, and the frog exudes small amounts of poisonous fluid. The tips of arrows and darts are soaked in the fluid, and remain deadly for two years or longer.

@@AntsCanada also in captivity you are more than likely more harmful to dart frogs than they are to you, they can breathe through there skin and the oils on your hands can clog their pores and hurt their breathing so its always best to avoid holding them at all unless absolutely necessary but they are great pets I still have mine and its one of the coolest pets I've ever owned.

I have built several no maintenance tanks. I would put some more plants in your pond. More fast growing plants that do well with roots submerged but the foliage grows outside the water. Pothos, Philodendron or Peace Lilly seem to work well. But many other plants like mint or lettuce can also do very well. The duck weed and other similar floating plants also do really well so good to see you put that in. Maybe once your vines send more roots into the water it will be enough. To many animals in the water can quickly overcome the plants uptake of nutrients. If your not trimming plants regularly from the pond, it's probably not enough growth to remove all nutrients. If your not doing water changes, you want to keep an eye on nitrates to make sure the plants are keeping up. A bog filter can work really well and this setup is perfect for a bog filter so you might want to look into that. Anubias grow WAY to slow to help remove nitrates, they look good but really don't do much for nitrate removal. Submerged plants in general don't do much at all.

I would add a variety of plants to the small pond. Anubias filter directly from the water, but you’ll still need plants that will draw nutrients from the substrate. Dwarf water lilies could work; once they get roots in the substrate, they rapidly grow. Cryptocorynes are also pretty good, but they’re slow growers. Sword plants will send out runners and spread pretty fast.. sometimes. I’m not sure what they’re actually called, but what’s sometimes referred to as betta bulbs are pretty prolific

u could always add some spider plants...they grow anywhere even under water as i had them in one of my tanks and they are pretty incredible cleaners! easy to maintain and u can pull them out when they get larger to put in some small ones again=) if u make a separate tank for filtering u could use spider plants to filter that water too!

This vivarium has reached a point where the lore and storyline will be infinite and never ending. It’s a marvel what nature is, this rainforest can theoretically exist for the rest of time with proper care. The ecosystem will be so vast and rich with so many different types of creatures as more prey insects reproduce and predators multiply. It’s been a treat to witness this tank evolve from the beginning, it sheds so much light on nature that we can see. We walk around in our day to day lives almost always forgetting that outside of human life, there is a world where nature is happening all around us. Being able to see a small slice of that reality in this enclosure is wonderful and incredibly eye opening. We’re able to see some of nature’s greatest moments up close, moments that would almost certainly escape our eyes if we hadn’t stopped to look.

Epic project. Rainforest systems tend to contain a lot of snails and slugs, so you might want to add some from your area to the land section. Other than Clints specific ant eating recommendations, I would slow down the addition of predators and feeders now for a while, to let the system settle a bit. Of cause, such a vivarium will always require some more additions to be the best it can be, but for the most part, a stable predator-prey relationship should get time to develop in an ecosystem and most of the energy in the system should originate from the plants and then go through herbivores and detrivores to the predators. If you add high numbers of one species of feeders, you boost the numbers of their predators (and if you are unlucky, the crazy ants benefit the most). And that, in return, may than deplete the populations of the less abundant herbivores. Also: If you have the opportunity to do so, without destroying to much other stuff, it might be worth to give the invasive ants a hot water treatment to reduce their populations and number of queens, to give the native ant species an advantage. It would be a pity if the crazy ants, which apparently had a head start, took over the whole vivarium.
