We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.

I've never followed anyone for the whole trip on a youtube channel but i have to say i was hooked from day 1. Whether it was a chuckle at your long-term plans or just to watch the channel grow, it's been an incredible journey, one that i hope will not be over anytime soon. The determination from you both is a wonderful thing to watch. Josh is a very talented man fair play but with the added bonus of a wonderful wife and family behind him, i wish i had half of the incentive and motivation to do what you have done and achieved it is a credit to you both. I hope there are many more video diaries to come and many more years in the following.

The little bits of Elli action are so precious. Watching her slowly spin in a cardboard box was classic. 3/8 of an inch!!! You two are incredible!!! It all looks wonderful! If a person is 6'8 to 6'9, I'm sure they are used to ducking :)

The main thing you've impressed me with is the strength to lift up each other, while allowing each other to experience emotions without criticism. And the second is your pride of work. Doing it right from the parts that are hidden (replacing rotten boards) to the finishing touches while adjusting your plans. Not compromising but improving through innovation. Plus teaching the young ones, you can do it!

It is true. When you build it yourself, even with a few hiccups, it is a very rewarding feeling. I built my custom log home in North Carolina and it was truly magnificent knowing where every nail, bolt, screw, and hidden "Ruh-Roh" is!!

When I had my kitchen measured, they told me I needed a 3” filler because my kitchen was 1/2” short of getting the next size cabinet in. I tore out the interior walls sheet rock and put the sheet rock between the studs gaining my 1/2” I needed. I put a piece of thin plywood between my lowers and uppers to put my marble tile on!

Please don't be discouraged, every time you put your foot forward you are making progress. I think we all have our lists to get done in a day and we try very hard to accomplish them. The house is amazing, to see your vision come true.

Guys as long as you can cross items off your list you have accomplished a milestone there is always another day. From personal experience, the finishing is 3x as hard and as long as the main construction. My 4,000 ft shop went up in 4 days. Finishing the interior and moving in took 3 months!! No need to be discouraged, just realistic.

Funny how things go out of style, only to come back in style decades later. I use to use those livestock panels and old rusty tin for railings back in the 70s, and now to see you using it on your railing made me smile. My favorite is at 9:30, those precious dimples. But, I have five girls of my own.

I thought I recognized those tv mounts. We bought the same one in October to mount a TV in our service office at work. I picked it for all the good reviews, and the second it was on the wall, it got tons of compliments. My boss also commented how simple it was to install, even though we were working with less than ideal metal studs, it still performed splendidly.

I think the floors came out looking great. When my wife and I lived in Tallahassee, Fl. our house was on a slab. We removed the crappy looking pergo flooring and carpeting throughout the house, sanded the slap and used a base color and oak wood stain over the base coat, feathered it and used a semi gloss cement sealer and the floors looked like slabs of marble. When we sold our house to move to Tennessee a radon test was needed and we had the lowest radon level the man who conducted the test ever saw in our area. I'm glad you kept the original wood flooring and it didn't look orange in the video.

We had the same problem when we installed our island. The countertop guy told us the island was a little too big for the slab, so we had to rearrange the way the cabinets were laid out for the island to fit the slab. It was a little like your solution, moving the cabinets around to make it fit.

You could go back and add a longer down rod for that ceiling fan. That could help avoid future damage to ceiling and fan.

I can tell you EXACTLY when you will finish your rental home. When you receive your FIRST offer from the FIRST customer who wants to rent it. Discouragement is normal ~ and you've BEAT that, every single time 💯

You have to remember to always check your centerline measurements left and right of the range and sink. Especially when you design against a wall. I've seen experienced Designers do this.
