We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.

The solar panels create shade from the sun..They just need to rig something to stop the animals from damaging them again... Anyone who isn't living off grid should not say things like that...

You guys probably know this but, I'd suggest you keep a few spare panels on hand and also get some chicken wire and cover the bottom of the wires so Leon and others can't get into it. having said that Leon is super cute, curious and loving. What a good boy :)

You need to tack on those clear plastic rug runners with the tiny spikes on the back with the spike side out around some posts for Leon to rub his head on. We used that with our horses and they loved them.

Josh and Erin. Box in the bottom area of the solar panels include a floor. This will keeps critters out and give need pasture storage shed too. Then place a small room oil radiator heater in it. This will maintain a ~40-50 degree temperature of your solar panels melting snow and ice. The additional sun access will more than pay for the energy used. Solves both problems. I believe my man Leon did this to point you towards this very solution. Don't mess with Leon. He gave you this gift for the holiday because he loves his family.

we have zero problems getting our cows to go wherever we want. Secret is ground corn feed. We feed them a small amount every week and they will follow us all around the farm to get to it. I feel your pain chasing those cows. :)

You need to build a fence around your solar panels, and put a gate where you can get in and out to clean it. Put the fence out far enough away from the front so it will not cast a shadow on the panels.

Maremma suits their climate better 👍 our bluey's are the best dogs but they'd have to put a coat on it all winter... Also Maremmas protect the feathers and sheep 🐏🐑💙👍

Get Leon one of those big cattle roller brushes that hang sideways and he can scratch himself on it. I've seen farmers also take just the roller off of motorized broom attachments and rig it up between 2 posts for animals to use.

You guys need one of those giant bristle brush similar to a cylindrical street sweeper or snow blower brush for Leon and the cows. I have seen it on other videos and the animals on the farm go crazy for it. It’s like a giant back and body scratcher! You guys are so loving and patient! Happy holidays!

You definitely need to get your other vehicle fixed, have you figured out what exactly is wrong? I know you tried one thing and that wasn’t the problem. Just a thought, once you get this issue resolved, could you use tin sheets to cover the wires on the bottom of the ones that Leon and the animals can reach? That may future proof against animal sabotage, and it should drain fast enough to prevent any issues with water build up.

Leon is such a character! He just loves being in on everything you do. My sisters and I used to break off the icicles we found and eat them. We were just kids and didn't know any better; I wouldn't do that now. The last scene with all those icicles hanging on the fence was really beautiful!! Makes me a little homesick for the West Virginia hills.

I love the view of your property from the living room. Contrasted against the cold icy lanscape, it looks so cozy inside. For me, days like that are the perfect time to snuggle up under a warm blanket on the couch and watch a movie.

Halters and leads for the cattle. Work with a little to get them used to the leads, 4H and FFA kids do it to get cattle ready for shows.

Regarding the renegade called "L", a few suggestions: For the solar panels, you could build a wooden wall of 3/4" plywood at the base to stop him from messing with the cables. He is seeking attention as his girls aren't keeping him busy enough this time of year. And bad habits are hard to break. You could also set up an 'electric' fencing system on the items he likes to 'damage' to get the attention he seeks. Sometimes we are faced with something so regular we don't see the tunnel of freedom's opening. For L, he still thinks he's a boy ram. If he saw a reflection of himself in a mirror, he might just charge the reflection.

You could put flexible PVC on the chicken water downpipe. This way Leon could rub against it and not snap it off. Love you guys!

I love the remoteness of your off-grid property and how self-sufficient you are in taking care of it. As much as Leon apologized, I'd consider installing Leon-proof fencing around the solar array. Merry Christmas from a fan in Oklahoma.

Do you have any left over roofing tin you could screw to the underside if the solar racking to protect the wires? And how about a flexible tube (like a part of a garden hose) from the chicken water barrel to the watering pipe so it can get knocked around without breaking?

I always wondered from day one why a fence of some sort wasn't built around the solar panels to keep livestock away from them. A protective fence of some sort would certainly bring "Peace Of Mind" as well as pay for itself by eliminating damage from livestock

Hey guys... suggestion: put some short poles down in the ground with about 3 feet sticking out of the ground and wrap them with, maybe rope or something rough for Leon to scratch against. This might keep him from rubbing against the things he shouldn't. Just a thought...

My uncle Bill could call out, and the cows would all come from the back pasture to the barn. He had over 300 acres! He cared for them all till the day that he died. He had a herd of about 120 cows. I loved my summers with my cousins on the farm. I learned to work hard and take care of others before myself on that farm.

I commented a couple times about a fence around the solar panels when you were expanding the system. Should be a board or pole fence for sheep and cattle. They love to rub everything.
