Super Smash Bros. 4 is widely considered to be the blandest game in the series by fans. While it was received positively at the time, Ultimate has all but replaced it nowadays. However, that’s not to say that Smash 4 didn’t have any of its own merits - after all, it had one of the strongest newcomer selections in the whole series and was the first Smash game to be playable on a handheld! The main way I got to experience Smash 4 was in its portable form, and there was actually a mode unique to this specific version of the game. Let's talk about Smash Run.
Music:
- Gallery/Hoard [Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U]
- Coin Launcher [Super Smash Bros. Brawl]
- Multi-Man Smash [Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U]

Trust me, I didn't forget about this. There's nothing forgettable about the unholy terror of suddenly hearing Orne music and not knowing where it is coming from before getting jumpscared and instakilled. Seriously, I'm an adult and that still scares me more than any horror game.

2500 hours. That's how many I clocked on Super Smash Bros 3DS. And, without exaggeration, 99% of that is all due to Smash Run. No other game in history has captured the same level of addiction in a single player setting as this one. As such, I've learned plenty of very niche trivia I don't think anyone has mentioned (Unless they talked about it in some obscure Discord server or subreddit idk). The way I love playing Smash Run is collecting as much stats as possible. I'm not generally into the Final Battle but playing this way serves as a very fun high score challenge where the points effect your character. The meta for playing this way is to reach the upper right area on the map as soon as possible. This is because it's the most likely to include boss enemies, which give out the most stats. On top of that, the tower beforehand could also contain a 2X boost inside, and there's plenty of door opportunities along the way. Currently my preferred setup for the Smash Run Powers as a general rule: Level 2 reflect for situations like Lurchthorns and Magikoopas. Level 1 heal for obvious reasons. If the character can't reach the aforementioned top right battleground reliably at 275 jump (Roy, Donkey Kong, Ike, ETC), Level 1 High Jump. Afterwards, level 3 or 4 Super Leaf depending on the weight, since it's basically better Peach Float. If they're a multi-jumper or a physic, they either don't need it or gets combo'd with a Rocket Belt as equipping both and pressing down while jumping immediately activates the rockets, saving time. Then Level 2 or 3 Hammer for massive damage and Level 2,3 or 4 Bo-Bomb for cancelling the Hammer animation, fire damage, or in combination with reflect for safe kamikaze attacks. Lastly, if I have the space, I use the remaining slot for Back Shields, since a Level 1 of those is the only item in the game that costs 1...kg? pound? the game doesn't specify how heavy they are. They can actually be very useful against boss enemies, especially Clubberskulls, since it negates any damage taken by them when positioned correctly. The Melon from Pac Man (specifically from Freaky Fruit) is the most busted move in the game by far. It adds the damage values of both Special and Arms, and you can Z-drop and re-catch it while it bounces off and damages enemies. With practice and high stats, this will shred boss fights in seconds. You can easily increase both stats manually too by equipping the Rocket Belt, Super Leaf and Back Shield all at once, and with a fruit in hand mashing the special button. At the same time, he's the only character I use a level 4 reflect power because enemies like those stupid ghosts can backfire your gameplan. Playing as Lucario is basically turning on Hard Mode, as you need at least 60% to do even just acceptable damage, resulting in very risky plays against Bulborbs, Boom Stompers, Darknuts and other heavy hitting enemies. The best way I found is to equip at least 2 Bo-Bombs, and at the start of a match, Kamikaze into one enemy the first time and then just yourself the 2nd. He thankfully has a good kit including Piercing Sphere and a strong back air to make things manageable. Another busted move is R.O.B.'s Robo Beam. Because it hits through multiple enemies and even the uncharged beam will cause them to stagger. There are so many situations this becomes useful especially since you can angle it. The moment you see a group of enemies spawn? Let er rip. A flying enemy is about to shoot at you and there's a large guy in your way? Let er rip. You need to jump away from the platform your standing on to hit enemy? Let er rip. As I alluded to, collecting stats from enemies, chests, or in open air isn't the only way to charge up the stats. There's very few special moves that can reliably charge the Special Stat up for you (Bonus Fruit and Limit Charge are basically the only ones), but the rest of them have easy ways to charge if you're in need of them. Simple running with Speed, equipping passive items for Arms, and repeatedly spot-dodging for Defense. Jump can be charged by equipping the Super Leaf, holding down, and mashing the Jump button, as they will be continuously close to the floor and increasing the jump stat. Sadly this is worse on the multi-jumpers, Ness, Lucas and Mewtwo since their double jumps cancel the ability to float. As for Attack, this is the most interesting. You have to spam an attack without anyone nearby but which attack you spam is character dependent. Jabs increase them by .5, tilts, dash attacks and aerials by 1, and Smash Attacks by 2. Some characters need to spam a tilt, others a smash attack, a few like Little Mac and Bowser Jr can spam with aerials, and Villager is the only one who's best to use Jab. As expected, some characters are better than others. Mega Man and Palutena are both awful for attack boosting, but then you got Ryu and especially Ness who makes this system super flawed as they can easily spam d-tilt and see the attack stat rise very quickly. The door minigame has character specific quirks. Bayonetta can make easy work of the target minigame thanks to Bullet Arts N-air, Kirby can spam Stone on Break the Crystals, as can also be effective with Mega Man's Danger Wrap, Warlock Punch, and the Melon, and the Polar Bear from the 2nd Survive Hard minigame can easilly be defeated with a fire attack. You can chuck a Bo-bomb with everyone with good timing, but other cool character moments include Pac-man timing his On-Fire Hydrant to avoid the cannons, Toon Link prematurely shooting a Fire Arrow and the bear landing on it, and my personal favourite, Ryu doing a heavy up tilt, and then a counter clockwise 270 degree motion into Shakunetsu Hadouken. There's only a couple characters I would call "Bad" when it comes to stat collecting, and even then they can still do good games if lady luck is on their side. Souflee Fests, 2 or 3 hard doors, or surprise All Star Stats can make things easier. And I usually play without Equipment, so they can make the character viable. As for the characters themselves, Robin is way too slow and suffers from a bug where all electric attacks cause hitlag on the user, but 0 on the enemy, leaving him without a combo game and a lose-lose for Bronze vs Levin Sword. And then there's Olimar. Also very slow, and he's reliant on Pikmin to do damage. The lower resolution on the 3DS screen and having to traverse all across the map can lead to situations where a Pikmin randomly dies without you knowing, and even moments where you do the attack motion, and nothing happens. I hate playing as him an every time I give him a chance I'm reminded how awful he is to play. On the other side, Ganondorf is the only character throughout my lifetime playing this game where I got all 6 stats maxed out, back in 2021. it was a very celebratory occasion, especially since I didn't even use equipment or Wizard's Dropkick iirc. Then again, if this was a multiplayer setting, a semi-competent Sonic player showed up, and the final battle was Race to the Finish, This would likely be all for not. This is why I tend to prefer playing Smash Run while quitting out before the final seconds. It's a much more satisfying way of playing the game for me and it doesn't rely on RNG to help me get the victory. I really wish I have a good capture card for my 2DS XL because there are so many more things about this masterpiece of a mode I want to share to the public.

What characters do you have the highest scores on? I have a couple hundred hours of Smash Run, and my tactics are a little different. I use a lot more of the spinning blades power, and I utilize equipment as much as I possibly can (mostly all-around trade off, critical chance). It would be interesting to compare what kind of scores you get with your strategies in comparison to the ones I came up with

This mode was really fun. Each player was in their own version of the level. People wanted to be in the same world and possibly see each other and fight, but I remember thinking that the 3DS couldn't handle that. Not sure if the devs said that or if it was just an assumption from the community. Either way, this probably wouldn't have been a problem on Switch, so I really wish they brought this back for Ultimate. Maybe next game. You deserve more views! This was a very well made video.

I do not understand why they didnt think this game mode was good enough to bring back. Smash run was the sole reason I even bought smash bros in 2014. If Ultimate had it, id have bought it. I still play smash run to this day whereas smash bros itself I quit years ago. No game modes worth the time, its just a nostalgia compilation nowadays.
