Along with my husband Clay, our dogs, cats, bees, and some poultry, we live in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming and are working on setting into our own new little homestead. I've been living this lifestyle since 2014 and my wonderful partner has joined me more recently. What will you find if you follow the channel and watch the videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. We split wood for heat, fill the water tank from a gravity fed spring, and attempt to grow as much of our own food as possible between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.

You need to make that space into a lean-to greenhouse.

Right! Just get some twin-wall polycarbonate for walls and roof. Probably use standard 16" framing due to snow loads (you could do 24" in a warmer climate). And plenty of *venting*, because as soon as you have a roof, you'll probably be in more danger of burning up the plants rather than freezing them.

If you pug rotten Wood and straw dirty with chicken poo and compostables in the bottom of the beds that rotting down itself produces heat

I love what you’re doing, experimenting and high density beds. The plants look healthy and well cared for. I spent a lot of money on my little garden with veggies, blackberries, hazelnuts, fencing, trellises, mushroom/chicken manure compost and raised beds. I also bought a used tiller. It took me three years to raise enough for finances to be in the black. I didn’t borrow money and never expected to do better than the grocery store; but, I wanted to eventually do pretty good on the food money. Thank you for sharing your vision with us…from east Tennessee.

Ariel, I’m so excited for your new beds and what you can grow! Try to save seed from what you’re growing in there. Over time, they will continue to be stronger as the seed/plants adapt to your climate.

Wow, the most healthy and beautiful plants I have seen in raised garden beds! Thank you so much for sharing. Your video is encouraging and inspiring! I have been following, Nicole Burke, on her KZfaq channel 'Gardenary' she teaches to, somewhat, throw out the plant spacing rules and not to leave any soil uncovered. So far, It looks like you have proven what nature does and what she teaches. I have started intercropping and planting my plants closer together. Our plants in our garden beds are finally starting to look much better. 🙂

Yes I too have found than many things grow really well planted much thicker than generally recommended. Much less weeding since once the plants get going, there is just really no room for any other plants (weeds) to get going at all. I'm glad to hear your garden is doing well!

Glad these planters are working out. Maybe they’re the way to go if you want to expand the garden without worrying about quack grass invading the beds - unless that thing finds a way to poke through metal…

One year in central Wyoming, my garden froze on the 4th of July. One spring, we had a major blizzard on May 25.

Have you considered making a lean-to green house on that side of the workshop? Or maybe more along the lines of a 3 season porch? It would give you a space outside the house for doing your starts and be frost protected.

I live in Michigan zone 5 and we can grow peppers with a frost cover. They don’t get very big but they do produce peppers. Though I would stick to the smaller fruiting peppers. Ace is a verity from Johnny seeds and they are doing very well with dozens of blossoms instead of the five each on the heirlooms. I would do bush green beans because they mature faster and we get more beans. Did you try cucumbers? I think they would do great since they like cooler weather but don’t love frost

That is amazing! It's so cool what you can do with even low levels of temp modification (ie not greenhouses, heaters, etc). i imagine you could cloche with glass jars and get things in early enough to get fruit - I saw a farmer in a colder area of PA that used a corn based plastic sheet over thier seed corn to get seet corn a couple weeks earlier than they could normally harvest. Very interesting!

When I lived in Wyoming at 6500 ft, we had great luck with seeds developed for Alaska...

Thank you for linking those raised garden beds. I want to use these metal type beds and there are several garden channels that sell them. They can be pricey but these seem like good value. I think the wisdom on corn and beans is to plant the corn earlier so it's bigger when you start. Then start the beans in the ground after the corn is tall enough to act as a trellis. That way the corn will always be ahead of the beans.

My understanding is that planting popcorn with or near sweet corn will alter the sweetness of the sweer corn through cross pollination...you can let us know if you notice this or not, when you harvest and cook some.

At her elevation in Wyoming, winter temperatures are well below zero, so not really an option.

They are GORGIOUS!!! I always loved the beauty of the old lockers that you planted all the herbs and flowers in. So many colors and textures : ) Too funny, you just mentioned your aversion to the color Orange.... again.🤣🤣 PS what is flowering tobacco used for? A veg/salad green?? Or the flowers?

With regard to poppies: I usually don't have great luck when planting poppy seeds in spring and have them germinate but if I scatter the seeds on top of the snow, there seems to be better germination. Perhaps the poppies will germinate next year?

They are supposed to be overwintered or planted in Feb where I live. The key to poppies is to not care at all what happens to them and they do great on their own. Just throw the seeds over your shoulder in the dead of winter and they will do everything else.

The beds are so pretty. I'm experimenting to try growing sunshine (buttercup variety) squash in a big container. It's so good but hard to find at the farmers market. If I can get 4 It will probably be enough for me to freeze for winter for 3 old folks. If I get any more than 4, I can share with my sister. I'm thinking I might have to jury rig some hammocks for the squash so they have room to grow. It's always fun to see how far we can push habitat to do our bidding!

Are you considering building a lid for them to turn them into hot houses for the winter? With the heat from the building that might be something to look into. Everything looks awesome so far! With regards to tomatoe and pepper plants I start some indoors in Feb and buy some starts. I dont put them out until almost June (I'm in Canada) This year they are doing awesome, last year everything collectively died on me.

Maybe a way to track temperature where plants are growing better, like the corn in one bed. Starting plants indoors prior to planting in beds. The corn almost looks knee high!!!Love this!

These plants are not frost hardy, but are they chosen also because they are heat hardy ( beings tgey are against a metal wall ? Or is it that the sun isnt shining on that wall due to the sun being high ?

You don't like the color Orange ? : ) That is Funny. However, when I was Pregnant with my only child/daughter when I was 37; IF I even visualized or thought about the COLOR ORANGE ...I felt very NAUSEOUS : ( & I actually like the color orange. It's not my favorite, but I don't have any adverse reaction to it. # Very interesting phenomena, huh?
