It has a points system and official scenarios so I would say it has all the trappings of a competetive game.

Yeah, because 40k has become extremely toxic due to the meta chasing, constant rules changing, and hyper competitive attitudes of sweaty nerds. 30k has long been a haven away from that bs. It's not gatekeeping, it's what the game was made for. If you want meta crap then 40k is still there.

Yep that’s a classic toss up. Or I actually like playing a rule that I picked up from playing street ball. Offence calls fouls, so the player who’s turn it is makes the final call. It encourages fair play and makes the game decisions on the player and not the dice in judgments. I let fate decide on the other aspects of the game that is intended :)

Start small and work at it one unit at a time:) that’s how I approach building an army. Just one at a time, and focus on them to make it what I have envisioned from the start. It’s the best feeling to play with a full legion and everything is dialed in. Worth every minute and the best gaming I’ve ever experienced!

It's complicated. HH armies are generally played at 2.5k instead of 2k is my understanding, but the models are also much more expensive, so actual army size and model counts tend to be smaller, especially as there aren't really horde armies.

Cheers mate that’s kind of ya to say 😁. It’s more common to play frontline games at 3k, or do 2.5K so you have to make a choice on the extra toy or two in your list to make the build more interesting. There is however games of ZM (zone mortalis) which is around 1-1.5K that’s all tight corridor fighting to mimic interior and starship boarding actions. Or fan made Centurion which limits tanks and favours more infantry, landspeeders, dreads which is one of my all time favourite ways to play :)

Most of the units have equivalent rules for play in 40K. The Legion Tactical Squads can be 40K Tactical Squads. The Praetors can be proxied as captains. The Dreadnought and tank have 40K rules too.

@@PlayOnTabletop Don’t sweat it, my overall goal was to help out the channel by picking up some merch, so that’s what really matters. Things from Spring are always hit or miss, not your guys’ fault. I’d just love to see you guys partner with a new vendor sometime.

How so? Chess is far more balanced than 40k. 40k became pay to win.

The Horus Heresy is the story that comes before the current Warhammer 40,000. Some models are cross playable as those units have survived that long.

We haven't played as much as we would like. In rules look for the term "model" opposed to unit. If it says model, the Sergeant needs to take it. We play it where the Sergeant would die in this case.

I didn't mention it , but I was refering to the SoH terminator tartarus squad and the sargeant is an infantry character so I could allocate the wound to another model according to the Characters and Wound Allocation paragraph on page 198.

The absence of them is the main reason I'm switching to HH from 40k

I’m a new 40k fan and was fully intent going Horus heresy for my first army. This was before HH 2.0 announcement. I prefer 30k lore since that’s where I started the books. That said, even though HH isn’t only SM, most people don’t like that HH is pretty much all SM.

Sometimes it just takes a single individual to just commit and start collecting a legion. I hope the drive to a LOT more plastics will make the barrier entry much easier than a sea of resin that can make others shy away.

@@c3ramics yeah that was always a big factor holding me back… I find SM vs SM fights boring, and the game was essentially “want to make a large investment in another game system that is the least interesting matchups of 40K?” and I just couldn’t do it. If I’m dropping thousands of dollars into a tabletop game, I want to have as much variety as I can get.

@@SHADOWSTRIKE1 haha exactly the dilemma that I dealt with. Still bought a betrayal at Calth set. I will plan to make my army one that I can double for 40k. Someone did Luna wolves to White Scars. Lot more variety with SM chapters so will see what I come up with.

@@PlayOnTabletop Well i play Iron Warriors and still have 150 mark 3 and 4 Marines but wanted this slightly bigger ones for my Hammer of Olympia Detachment i generaly field 100 Tacticals whose advance been Supported by Contemptor Dreadnoughts with Melta Lascannons Makes for truly Epic Scenes bit i advice too take Apothecarys or Chaplains to make them not run away all of a sudden.

You’re correct, it is a game and has competitive elements in there with win conditions and such. It’s all from perspective, and in the case of myself I don’t view any tabletop game as a good candidate to play in that manner. Or it can also be viewed as where the placement and emphasis on being competitive is. A common narrative in Heresy is to build an army that focuses on the military organization and to utilize it to win the objective. Not to sacrifice the lore in favour of more hard number stats and synergies that prioritize the game mechanic before the world building mechanic. You are free to play however you like and if it’s competitive as you like! Remember this video is a reaction and opinionated piece about the game. Just from a different angle to yours :) I hope your still playing games set in the Horus Heresy and having fun with the hobby ✌️❤️🙏

@@BbMiniatures I definitely understand that, my issue isn't people that WANT to play narrative or WANT to play competitive, or people like yourself and other youtubers that make videos promoting narrative play or competitive play. The problem is when people state "this is a narrative game", its calling the people that want to play it the other way wrong. I think it's fine to let people know that many people that have a history of playing the game play it narratively and new players have to be prepared for that, but stating you can only play it one kind of way only serves to gatekeep players that just want to play with their toys. And please, don't get me wrong, I'm not "calling you out" or anything like that, you are definitely not the only one that's saying this, I just want to open the conversation so we can let people know its ok if you want to play competitively. There's already too much gatekeeping in the hobby and we shouldn't be working to add more.

@@Klerik131 to be fair it wasn’t BB that said it wasn’t a “competitive” rule set it was the other guy. BB actually pushed back on that a bit too, which I appreciated. Personally I think that less arbitrary randomisation (running, who strikes first in combat etc) and rules bloat makes the game both more competitive and more immersive/fun

Sorry to hear that you have had a negative experience. We don't understand gatekeeping. There may be differing opinions on what constitutes a fun time at the table and how hard one wants to play, or how narrative, but ultimately we are all just trying to have fun since it is a game. Hope there are good experiences ahead for you!
