December 2022
The coast North of Glencolumbkille heading through An Port to Glenlough is described by many as the most beautiful coastal hike in Ireland. I've wanted to visit this area for a good few years and finally had the opportunity at the start of the month. Come along and enjoy a taste of what this amazing area is like.
My earlier short video is linked below showing the best of the drone footage I took on the day.

One of the best places to hike in Donegal. There's no words to describe it.

Niall, a place that needs time to fully appreciate all that the eye can behold along that amazing coastline👍 and that return trip to wild camp will be cool😊Looks like it was just you and the sheep farmer at An Port that day👍 it is a busy spot in the warmer months. Super colours on the ground and in the sky - it is definitely scenery overload. Stayed at the cottage there for a week Easter 2013 when the temp didn't get above freezing and it was an amazing experience😊

You're the second person that told me they stayed there! Must be a busier place than I realised and I struck lucky 😊

Hi Niall. Looks like a beautiful spot. The west coast is more rugged and spectacular than the east. Nice drone footage as well 🧑‍✈ 👍. Have a happy Christmas and New year. Take care

It is beautiful and I really can't believe it took me so long to visit properly. I'll be back there in 2023 without a doubt 👍 Happy Xmas 🎄 🎅 😊

Great video! The landscape is stunning! Great idea to use your drone like a tripod. Also love the accent. Could listen to it all day ☺️

That was beautiful Niall - I’ve wanted to do that stretch for quite a while and you showed it off so well! I’ll definitely aim to get up there in 2023 - can’t keep letting it slide 🤞 You struck gold with the weather and had such great conditions to make friends with your drone too. A new partnership has been formed 🎉 What a hike and like you said - countless places to pitch with incredible views, a no brainer!! Happy Christmas to you and your family!! 🎄😊

Absolutely love there Niall. I now make it a point to walk that coast at least once a year now. Has to be up there as one of the most amazing hikes in Ireland. August past i watched a pod of at least 20 dolphins feeding at Port. …Was amazing. The coast north side is even more spectacular and dramatic. Glenlough bay is just mind blowing and you really have to pinch yourself when it’s behind you. Also check out “Dan wards” cottage when you are next there ( a now Abandoned cottage just up the Glenlough river ) Lough Annafrin & Lough Croaghbalaghdown. Just WOW! Thanks for sharing your video. I’m already itching to get back :-)

Hey Pat, thanks for the great comment. Seeing those dolphins must have been out of this world 🐬😍 I only explored a small part of the coast north of Port and got a small glimpse of the potential. I fully plan to go back late Spring, early Summer for a wild camp at Glenlough. In fact the route I mention on the video from Outdoor Active is yours 😊 Really can't wait now hearing your enthusiasm for the area 👍😊

Found this article about the cottage. Some amount of history there in such a remote location! www.irishtimes.com/culture/searching-for-the-road-to-glenlough-1.1155107

@@nialloutdoors Yes, the locals can spin a yarn or two about the welsh poet Dylan Thomas who stayed in the area. There’s also a great painting from Rockwell Kent of the old cottage I mention. If I remember correctly that’s in some Museum in Germany or something but lots of his paintings from the area remain “missing”. I may be back in the area again around Paddy’s day ( My brother and friends are in a wee band that normally play Roartys bar in Glen every year - that’s some craic ). I want to explore Lough Annafrin more and do a camp there if possible. There’s suppose to be an old mass stone up that way although I have never saw it. It’s a no go area in the summer months unfortunately as it’s a complete Midgey fest. Spring/Late summer would def be a good shout. Looking forward to your video from there. I didn’t even realise I had published a camping spot on Outdoor active lol. Think I just used that for stats when bringing the wee man the last time and published in error :-)

@@nialloutdoors that's great. Thanks. Is that route marked?
@nialloutdoors
@nialloutdoors 3 ай бұрын
@@kieranstafford9718 it's not but it follows the coast, keep the water on your right and you can't go wrong 🤣 Once you get to the tower the route back is marked and follows a track. On the way out from Port you follow the track and turn off to follow the coast. It's not signed but if you are watching for it you will see the tracks of others and a faint quad track. From memory there was a post at the corner and a small stone sitting on top. Of course the stone isn't permanently attached so don't depend on this 😉
