MIDs or Mobile Internet Devices were a short lived phenomenon sitting somewhere between a wifi enabled PDA a portable media player and a netbook. Like most things there was a lot of experimentation with form factors and designs creating an interesting sub-set of handhelds. With the introduction if the iPhone these devices quickly lost favour with the public, with that the concept of a dedicated MID disappeared.

I had one when they were relatively new and enjoyed reading various websites in bed without a heavy laptop. But be careful! The hardware has a fault that if you connect the charger with the device off and then turn it on you'll destroy it! I lost mine this way, was a lot of talk about it "back in the day". Should be fine connecting to charger as long as it's on! Thanks for another top notch video. I also had the follow up with the pop out swivel camera, really liked that one too. I miss Maemo!

Wow, thats a crazy fault!!! Thank fully since I don't have a charger for it there's no fear of that 😂🤣😂 otherwise I might have bricked it first time 🙄

@@HandheldComputing Yeah, it's ridiculous how Nokia could release a self destroying like that. I found out after it was too late. Really sucked, used it to listen to internet radio and browse the web in bed. Loved that little thing, and after it died got the newer version which was fun with its swivel camera. Anyway, keep up these fascinating videos! See you on HPC:Factor!

I played with a MAEMO emulator - and whilst it was great, it lacked the ability to play S40/S60 apps of which there were many many more than for the 770. I still think these MIDs were a great design - I just could never afford one. Awesome video as usual.

This was my first experience of Maemo, I am very impressed with this slick OS, I think it gives CE a run for its money. They were an expensive bit of tech and unlike a lot of tech at the time were aimed squarely at the consumer market - this wasn't for business users they were on Blackberrys or UMPCs

Another great video and I've always wanted to get one of these Nokia Internet Tablets, I really like the design of the OS. There also appears to be a Palm OS emulator available for the internet tablets, called Garnet VM if you're interested in that :)

Nice! I still have an N800 in a box somewhere. Back then I regretted not waiting a little and getting the n810 instead.

I do think the 770 was a little laggy when opening new apps, going 252Mhz to 400Mhz with the 810 would make it a whole lot more useable! Great little machines though

I like the aesthetic of the OS. It has a friendly vibe, similar to Palm OS or the early MacOS.
@HandheldComputing

It's surprisingly user friendly, yeah I can see some similarity with Palm OS, I haven't used MacOS (always been a PC kind of guy) but they had some great design, like the iMac G4! You can customise some of the interface colours etc - will look at it in more detail at a later date once I have got it online 😉

This thing’s browser actually supports Flash 8 natively. So it opens up a possibility to run some flash based apps, like mini games, calendar, clocks etc.

i remember i used a motorola a780 for a few years around 2005. it was almost a modern smartphone with internet, email, gps navigation etc. the big change came with the invention of capacitive touch screens. i don't think the iphone actually changed much apart from marketing. the modern smartphone started with android.

There were defiantly smart phones long before the iPhone such as the Palm Treo or the Jornada 928. The iPhone was the first to be widely adopted, as you say because 1). it was Apple and 2). they advertised it to the MAX!!!!! It was also the natural progressor to the iPod touch so immediately there was a lot of people wanting that upgrade. I had a look on wiki at the a780 (not one I had heard of) its looks like a very functional device if a bit chonky 😉

I bought one used in 2010 in China for a cheap price and made great use of it. Unfortunately the wifi functionality has a bug that stops showing any SSID if there are more than 6 SSIDs around. After that I got an iPod touch and it was like a product from the future :)
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 3 ай бұрын
That explains why I couldn't find a Wifi signal at all at home!!! 2 networks + 2 printers broadcasting + the neighbours.... Thank you for the heads up I might actually be able to get it online now!!!!!
@XinmingChen
@XinmingChen 3 ай бұрын
@@HandheldComputing No problem! There is actually a simple workaround: You can hug the 770 (yes, hug it on your chest with your two hands covering it). You need to hug it twice: during its wifi search, and after clicking the SSID to connect. This might block the weaker SSIDs so that the bug won’t be triggered. Once it is connected, the bug won’t affect its connectivity.

@@HandheldComputingIf you want to learn more of the bug, just search for “maemo bug 2082”. Also be aware there is another bug about 770’s wifi (bug id 2006) that you’d want to install a deb fix, which can be downloaded from the end of the bug thread.

Old Nokia batteries are harder to find? They shared batteries across models as much as they could, they're plentiful. Even on MIDs.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 3 ай бұрын
That's good to know, when I had a look on ebay there were only a couple of battery listings and they are expensive, unlike Palm V where there are loads of listing. I didn't dig much deeper than that TBH 🤔

@@HandheldComputing Use battery model number(BP-5L for N770?), not the device("Nokia N770 battery"). They don't bother to enumerate all possible devices that can take it as there are just too many when it comes to old Nokia.

MIDs were a category of its own. But they're too similar to a PDA... I guess in today's time, they would be considered a wi-fi only tablet? lol

I miss the old interfaces, even though I've never used ones like this one specifically. Is this the Nokia70(?) OS? You should update the Wikipedia page on your findings! Considering how badly wrong the Psion Revo page was before I practically rewrote it... It'd be wonderful if our community as a whole carved out a highly detailed corner of the internet for ourselves!
