We've done many of these and I personally replace the meson only and have not had any come back. Also if you are out of new mesons to reduce the chance of a bad ic, I've also been able to reball the same meson and have it work. Once I complete the repair we'll put something on the meson for pressure and then add the shield.

That's cool :) I hope you continue to have no returns. It can be maddening sometimes turning out 30 of these in a week. I didn't think about doing something to hold pressure on the IC after replacing it. That could be just enough to keep one from coming back that has a pad separated that goes unnoticed.

Discovered your channel from someone over on r/mobilerepair. Great stuff. I think more channels like yours should exist. Thanks for doing this, and keep it up. 7:05. Hah. Gonna be completely honest with you. The first time I tried cleaning an iPhone 6 board of liquid damage, I informed the customer that I really don't know what I'm doing and that she should find a store that offers ultrasonic cleaning. She said it was alright, and to just try my best. I knew enough that I needed to remove the EMI shields, so I started going around the board taking them off so I could attempt to manually clean them. I flipped it over and started blasting that tape-covered area with heat. Sat there for minutes wondering when the fuck it would let me lift the shield off. Then I found out it was just tape and felt myself die a lot inside. Needless to say, that phone was very much dead after that, but it was also very much dead before. 18:40 I've found that most tacky fluxes seem to have that property of "locking" the chip down. It kind of flows right into place and does most of the work for you. I personally use Amtech 559, and it is actually reasonably easy to clean up even when cold. I use kimwipes and alcohol and an anti-static brush. A majority of it will get pulled right up. It also blows away very nicely on high air and low heat.
@ststele
@ststele 7 жыл бұрын
I did the exact same thing on my first iPhone 6 board. I toasted that sticker pretty good before realizing it was just a sticker! LOL I haven't used Amtech 559 yet but I'll probably give it a shot pretty soon when I make the next order. Thank you for the info and comments! I'm gonna be posting videos as often as time allows. :)

Don't feel badly someone will mess up due to you; we will mess up due to our own mistakes. You are helping us Jason! I wanna ask again in case you missed my question on the s3 data recovery video; have you considered chip-off technique for data recovery jobs? Also, I am going to start doing touch ic jobs real soon as I just got my new tools. I personally think you are changing too little. If i was sending you a board from one of my customers I would not only pay your low asking price but I would tip you! Haggling is not a good skill to try and hone on repair people, we generally sell ourselves short to begin with. I think you should be charging $200 for touch ic. How is it worth less than screen replacement? You are worth way more than your asking price Jason. I hope to see you raise the prices. I am going to charge $200 and I think Jessa charges $200. If they don't want to pay let them go to someone with less integrity.

Thank u! I think by chip off method you mean hooking directly to the flash memory and copying the data. I've thought of it but assumed it's most likely encrypted or have IDs on the file system that have to match for the OS to boot right.. It brought about more questions in my mind that answers and I moved on. LOL I'm sure there's a way to hook directly to the nand and copying the raw data but getting it to make sense would be amazing.

This method only works up to Samsung S5. Hopefully they'll be stuff available for the newer Samsung devices with UFS's but all you need is a Jtag box (I recommend Z3X Jtag box w/ emmc adapter) All you need to do is solder 6 wires to the emmc or alternative points on the board if available (which means you don't need to remove the chipset) or you can buy a socket that makes reading not only way easier/more repeatable but it dumps faster! forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f672/emmc-adapter-easy-z3x-jtag-box-1691845/ forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f672/e-mate-pro-emmc-tool-all-1-socket-all-1-adapter-work-easyjtag-2097603/

I had this problem with the cameras after replacing both touch ic;s, I ended up replacing the voltage regulator tiiiiiny chip, which brought back the back camera and then ended up re soldering some of the front camera components like the ferrites, caps etc near the cpu shield, this brought back the screen camera then, the odd thing is all of the components were testing just fine, so im guessing the only thing that was holding them to to board was the glue, possible heat transfer through the board caused them to detach, which is bizarre as I heat sink everything to death and never have the problem when doing a main pmu ic.

Hi Jason. Highly informative video thank you. If you don't mind I'd like to ask about how quickly you remove these chips. Am I correct in assuming you want to use higher heat to remove these chips asap before it starts affecting other components too much? looks like you using a bigger nozzle than I'm used to. What size is it? Be so grateful for your valued advice.

Thanks! Yeah, social media doesn't get you very far if you're not actually being social. LOL Well, for most people.. the howtobasic channel gets billions of hits and the guy never says a word. I've switched back to ChipQuik SMD291 for soldering these little guys on. It holds the chip snug for final heating when applied just right.. or it can be a total mess, either way. :)

I bought a new screen off eBay.after connecting the new screen the phone reboots then screen goes red and turns off. Then happened over and over. I typically use kapton tape :) Probably not the correct thing but I think the idea of that conductive sticker is to keep interference out. Once it is in the housing, the back is covered by grounded aluminum housing. Seems to me the conductive sticker may only truly help during testing before they get installed into housings. I may be wrong but I've never had a problem putting regular ole' tape over it.

What do you think about some shops only charging $40-60 for these board level repairs? Doesn't make sense to me for the amount of work involved
@ststele
@ststele 7 жыл бұрын
That would work out ok if there was never any problems... ever. I think those are the shops that the moment they see a torn pad or something, they cram the IC back on the board and send it back as no fix. Or they throw a chip on it and if it gets touch, they get paid, if it doesn't - no fix. I really don't think they're doing much troubleshooting for that price but then again, if they live in a place where $20 per day can pay the bills, maybe they do a dang good job? LOL - No way I'd do it for that price unless I could go back to living with my parents! :D

I used to pay Facebook to boost posts mostly but since I started posting videos here, I haven't paid Facebook another penny. It's gotten to the point that local walk-in traffic is very difficult to manage. It has slowed down some though. Good morning Jason, first off just to say great job with your videos and your approach, i have a question that maybe you might have an answer to, ive run into a problem recently on a few 5s and 6 not sure if other models are affected but the phone comes into me with either the connect to itunes logo or in a boot loop and then during an update or restore i get an error 9 and nothing i do gets it passed that, changed batteries, charge ports, screens, U2 ic in some cases but still the same. The few cases i've come across the owners haven't done anything unusual with the phones, they just go into the connect to itunes mode on their own.. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated..

Sorry, I should be able to answer you better here but this one is really not one of my strong points. It sounds like you've covered all of the basics including Tristar. I did a bit of Googling on error 9 and didn't come up with much other than possible network issues or software security problems. Hmmmmm.. Since you said a few, that really makes me think that this is software update related? Hopefully you've figured something out by now - I'm 2 days late. Thanks for the good compliments =)

Thanks for the reply, it looks like i'm just going to have to wait it out for a software solution.. i was hoping it was something i was missing.

An update on this, i read on a forum that it maybe a cpu issue and someone had some success by applying pressure to the cpu during the restore process so i gave that a try on a 6 by opening the phone and using 2 clothes pegs to clamp down on it during a restore and it worked, I have no doubt that it is only a temporary fix but at least i know what the problem is now..

Just a natural interested and hands on. I learned most of what I know about electronics before there was smart phones building radios and stuff with my dad. In the past couple of years I learned that it was all still the same stuff, it just requires a microscope to work on it now. :)

There are a lot of things that can cause this. It's usually something fixable but not always so easy to find.

ok but have you ever actually tried to underfill a chip after confirming that the touch is working?
@ststele
@ststele 7 жыл бұрын
No, but I have had many of them have flickering grey bars resurface merely hours after giving them the all clear. I test them very well too. It's strange how this can resurface with zero bending, then another swap of Meson fixes it sometimes for good, sometimes for a few weeks. I really don't think underfill is going to prevent this. It would certainly make warranty work a nightmare and there will be warranty work.

STS Telecom fair enough. Have you tracked the rework rate of full devices vs board only? If the housing is still bent or even partially bent it's going to be more prone to further flexing and subsequent failure. I'd suggest a pad over the mason and an insulated future proof plate with the thickness of an ipad mini lcd back bracket.

If this hot air station quit today, I would buy another one. I use it all day every day and it is very consistent. I couldn't imagine spending $1800 or even $800 on hot air. Maybe one day.

One more thing about this station. If you buy one, remember to remove the shipping screw from the bottom. I think everyone that you hear say, "they vibrate and are SO loud" - didn't read the directions. :-)

This is the one I'm using. Despite what I've heard about low end stations, this sucker has been a workhorse. It runs almost all day every day. www.amazon.com/Aoyue-852A-Digital-Rework-Station/dp/B000HDDXY0/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1478050839&sr=8-8&keywords=aoyue+station
