Sixty years ago, the world was shocked by the news that Marilyn Monroe was dead. On August 4, 1962, the coroner ruled her overdose death an apparent suicide. Six decades later, Marilyn Mania is more popular than ever. The highly anticipated biopic of Monroe, "Blonde," is set to hit Netflix next month. However, it's being met with some controversy over Cuban actress Ana De Armas' performance of Monroe. Some fans say Armas speaks with a slight accent when she portrays Monroe.

I will not critique this actress for portraying Marilyn as that is tough role to take on. There will never be another Marilyn no matter how hard someone tries to look and sound and act like her. The only thing I will critique is people like Kim Kardashian who used Marilyn's dress to get a ""see me" and "envy me" moment and in the process destroyed a dress belonging to Marilyn. Any actress who braves to take on the role of Marilyn has respect in my eyes.

I mean... People will find the smallest little detail to hate on everything, if the actress on this movie was an american actress who had the same tone , accent and looked exactly like Marilyn they would still find something to say. Ana de Armas is a great actress who which what I've seen so far from the movie is portraying Marilyn excellently, also, I didn't see people this mad over Austin Butler portraying Elvis and he looks less than Elvis than Ana from Marilyn, great performance either way.

@@bbygrlpt2 First of all, as a Cuban-American, I can vouch that Ana's accent is nowhere near thick in the Blonde trailer. Second of all, her real life accent is more refined in comparison to that of the mainstream Spanish or Latin actors working in Hollywood - including acclaimed icons like Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek. After all, she's one of the very few Hispanic actresses who has managed to play characters beyond her cultural/ethnic group. Third of all, she's already become the MOST famous young Hispanic actress in Hollywood and one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood in general and that's in the span of less than six years. Your statement comes across as disingenuous, but that's probably because you're jealous that no actress or actor from your country is getting nowhere near as much fame as De Armas. It's not her fault your people can't break through the glass ceiling.

One of the hardest working actors today and people want to criticize over a Cuban accent. How about when gringos played our people? Don't worry some people try to use accent as a means to show you that you aren't worthy of English language. It's ironic when the actual English were colonizing everywhere and missionaries traveled there to teach people English. If i an English by birth speak french I'll not loose my accent, then why do i need to criticize the other way round. Ignore it. If it makes you feel better, we all have some kind of accent or at least a regional affect on certain words. I’m from NYC, and people would always ask me where I was really from, or if I was from California, because I didn’t have an “New York” accent. But then, some time ago, I ran into a group of people who were all from Oregon, and they told me that while they couldn’t place my “accent”, it was definitely an east coast one. Hearing where you’re from is really cool, so if you have any lingering doubts about having an accent- please don’t! It’s just another cool part of the map of things that make you *You*.

Thank you for this. The problem isn't Ana, but whoever cast her. A person's accent (when portraying such a famous character) is incredibly important. Just as much as her facial features. She needs to look, sound, and act like the "real thing", otherwise it just doesn't work. The reason they cast Ana was because she is not American, and ALL movies nowadays absolutely have to have what they call "diversity".

@@arlynnm9835 true but in this case Marilyn's mother was a white american woman who was born in Mexico. Yes, Gladys (marilyn's mother) was mexican but her race was white anglo american. So by logic Marilyn Monroe is not "mexican american" when she has no hispanic blood - (go to wikipedia in what is an hispanic person). She's a white american woman like her mother. @@trollgeneral6624 Yes. If you were speaking Spanish as a born American, then you'd likely have an English accent in your Spanish. Any time you need clarity, just ask.

She speaks with a slight accent…. Who gives a fudge it’s a movie actress not the actual person. No one is going to sound 100% like her and look 100% like her.

They should have hired a voice actress for her. Can’t they do a voice over when de armas speaks?

She's a great actress. And from what I've read in the comments so far most people agree. I wonder if the American media is just over exaggerating this rumor to get hits. Leave her alone!
