Analog Vs Digital: Comparing Spring, Plate, and Chamber Reverbs

Reverb is one of the very first "effects," dating back to using microphones to capture room and chamber sounds, through springs, plates, and beyond. In this video, Andy compares analog and real-world reverbs against some digital counterparts that aim to simulate the most popular types of reverb effects. The analog plate really give a smooth and nature reverb compare to digital. For the room reverb, 3 of them have very diffrence type of room reverb sounds.

The actual physical delays like the Fender Spring Reverb, the Surfy Bear and the Plate Reverb have that body and physicality to their tone. The reverb is more spatial and seems more integrated with the original sound. They ARE part of the sound. The digital reverbs all sound killer too, and are very very accurate, but not 100%. They feel more tacked on to the sound, not as integrated to the original signal. Difficult to explain, since the difference is really subtle, but it IS there.

There's a much-ignored elephant in the room with us guitar players: reverb impulse responses. Without a doubt they can produce the best quality digital reverb. But there are almost no units available that can host them for live playing. While reverb IRs are essentially a series of presets - without the tweakability of algorithmic 'verbs, most guitar players and singers don't need to endlessly fiddle with their reverb. They need a great sound for their context and reverb IRs are the king for that. I've just bought the Source Audio True Spring and it's a beautiful sounding pedal. But if I could have got a reverb IR pedal that could handle 5 sec 'verb IRs, I'd have gone with it - and I'll use those in my DAW over the pedal or algorithmic plugins.

The best reverb pedal I've used is the MXR reverb. It's got lots of good options, a warbly mod setting, an "epic" setting, really nice plate, and GOOD SPRING. It's rare to find good spring in a multi-reverb pedal, but MXR pulled it off. Love that thing.

There's video floating on KZfaq of the guitarist from the Beach Boys using the Source Audio Spring reverb. If it's good enough for the Beach Boys, it's good enough me. Great video and playing, Mr. Andy.

Yeah I mean I’m just listening on phone speakers, but I thought it sounded as good as the analog spring units.

I still regret selling my Source Audio Collider… man I loved that Room reverb. Likewise, the Keeley Hydra had a ton of great verbs and it worked so well with the tremolo. Two pedals I should have kept but the chase for tone always has me selling and looking for the next great pedal! Thanks foe the fun comparison vid! My fav of them all was the Fender spring and the plate plugin!

This was a lovely comparison. I was pleasantly surprised by the Source Audio TSR, although I think the Deluxe wins! i liked both the real plate and the EMT emulation though I found them super different - the real plate was very bright and snappy and the EMT was more rich and lush. I have and love the UAD capitol chambers, and you showed it off very well here - kinda think it had the most character out of all the room options. As always, Andy’s playing is phenomenal.

I was really impressed with how well the pedal and software versions of plate and room held up against the real things. The Source Audio pedal sounded good but doesn't beat a genuine spring reverb to my ears. Digital never quite gets the 'drip' right. I bought a SurfyBear Classic earlier this year and it's blown me away! It feels so alive!

The Echo Plate is one of the best reverbs ever! Miles better than the EMT (I mean the real one), I used to rent one for mixes!! One thing you failed to mention is that you may get cooler or even more natural sounds by changing parameters in the digital units. I know the TSR can sound better than that.

I thought all the plates sounded good, although the physical analog plate did sound different. Not necessarily better, just different flavors. Spring on the other hand… the digital I thought sounded the same as the analog pedal, but didn’t much care for either. The only spring that sounded good to my ears was the amplifier built-in reverb.

There’s the Reverb (the channel) video of Rob Scallon checking out the history of reverb (the effect) in a studio that had the big plate, and the spring tank that looked like a boxing heavy bag in the basement. At one point they ran both together in the control room and it gave a HUGE sound that I wish someone put in a pedal!

So if I've got this right, you sent digital files of your dry guitar, digitally, to Albini's studio and they Re-amped/micd them into his plate verb and then they sent you back the digital file for the wet signal, which you then mixed with your OG dry guitar? If that is the case, I have to call BUNK on all these comments saying the 'real' reverb has _something_ the digital sims lack because, after all - your guitar signal wasn't analog and was digitized...
@jtdevrieze
@jtdevrieze 2 жыл бұрын
Lol no it's all digital cause you're watching it on KZfaq 😂 so by your standard anything on KZfaq or even recorded into a DAW to begin with is not truly analog. The point here was that the plate itself was a physical plate as opposed to a digital programming designed to pretend to effect sounds the way a real plate would, it's about real world physical sound effects we've grown to love vs human-programmed imitations of that same type of effect, not being an all-analog signal flow purist, hope this clears things up a bit for ya, have a nice day, peace and love 🖖

Analog all the way, all the chain, for personal use. Nothing sounds like the real thing, nor preserve the dry signal presence. For the other application scenarios, digital has its place.
