Learn how to configure Custom Dimensions in Google Analytics 4 with Google Tag Manager. There are some differences compared to the previous version, called Universal Analytics.
IMPORTANT: If you see some differences between your GA interface and what I show in the video, there is a chance that Google updated something. Take a look at this blog post www.analyticsmania.com/post/a... (maybe it will cover those recent changes. It’s much easier to update a blog post than a video).
When you send custom parameters to Google Analytics 4 and you want to see them in the interface of GA, you have to register them as custom dimensions.
Also, keep in mind that there are some limits related to Google Analytics 4 custom parameters. All of that (and more) are covered in this GA4 tutorial.

I really appreciate the video walkthrough. Helps a lot in understanding the flow. However, I don’t use GTM, and don’t plan on integrating it into my process; I can understand it’s click interface attraction, but I just find it to be a convoluted and fragmented experience. I hope you will make more tutorials that don’t involve GTM. Otherwise, great vid, thank you!

Hi Julius, great video thanks. In this example, the form_id parameter will return the number 9. Can I give this another name in GA4 for that I could more easily identify which form was used? For example, could I call it homepage_page_form or contact_page_form?

Hi Julius, how to set up a custom dimension that's sent with every GA4 event in GTM. Before, I used a GA setting variable that contained the UA tracking ID and custom dimensions. Now in GA4, do I use the Fields to Set in GA4 config? What's the best way to recreate this scenario in GA4?

Hi Julius, If I have multiple GA4 event tags in GTM and I want to pass same event parameters to all of these GA4 tags. Is there any way to do so without adding event parameters in each tags.

Julius, I do Klaviyo email marketing for one of my clients. But im facing a big porblem with GA3 conversion tracking. Now, I use Klaviyo's UTM parameters to send data to GA to see how much revenue these email made. In klaviyo it's a one number, but in GA3 it's like 50-60 times less. A HUGE gap between them. So i was thinking ... is there a different way I can track conversions from email (klaviyo) in GA?

I do not see the code for the tag in your online page and the example seems different... Do you know if we can track the type of WCMS used to generate the visited pages? With custom tags?

string is an only type of custom dimension (items array and any new parameter outside of items array)? or it can be also int or float?

i pulled the value form the website. then i created a custom dimension. but that dimension is not showing any values saying (not set). julius can you tell me a way to solve it?

I have followed all the steps as described here but when debugging on GA4 the parameter doesn't appear. Someone has any idea what the problem might be? I'm trying to add to my view_item event a custom parameter.

Hi Julius. I found myself the other day hesitating on whether to make use of the "generate_lead" recommended event. As shown in the video, the documentation says value and currency are "required" paramters, yet you opted to use your own. Can we just ignore those parameters even though Google says are required and use ours instead? What does even required mean in this context? Great tuto as always.

Depends on the event and the parameter. For generate_lead, value is highly recommended but not necessary. For purchase - kind of very necessary

A bit late here but in case if it's helpful for others, I read Google's docs the same way you did at first. But if I'm understanding the * section of these two params in the documentation, they're each only required if the other one is present. So I believe a generate_lead with no parameters would actually be valid.

I can see prduct custom dimensions in EXPLORER only, not in REPORTS. Even in debug view, I can't see them. Weird.

What if I don't use Tag Manager? Currently I can't drop down anything under Event Parameter when creating Custom Dimension. I want my Custom Dimension to track Unique Page Views, e.g. AccCode custom dimension to collect page title, page view, and unique page view.

Then you need to follow the GTAG documentation and write custom code according to it. Page title is tracked automatically. Pageview as well. Unique pageview is not available in GA4

Hi Julius, I've had a brain fade. I'm trying to do a search an replace filter in GA so I can rename the page title. At the moment GA shows my page tiles as "Page Title | Website Name". I'm wanting to use filter to remove the "| Website Name" part so I'm just left with the Page Title in my reports. I did this in a stack of sites years ago, but for some reason I can't remember the exact string. I'm trying this in the search string: \| Website Name and then leaving the replace string empty. But this is not working. Can you please tell me where I'm going wrong?

GA4 does not have such a filter. You would need to build a custom solution with Google Tag Manager where a variable takes the page title, then manipulates it (some JavaScript will also be needed) and then send that variable to GA4 as page_title. All in all, not a basic thing.

Can someone please explain how to add custom dimensions like author, organization, category, etc. in GA4 to show up in a pageviews report. I cannot get it to work, even after following Google’s forum for UA -> GA4 custom dimensions.

1. Ask a developer to push it to the data layer (you need to understand what data layer is and how it works to properly explain it to the developer) 2. And the rest of the steps are like I explain in this video

How can I track multiple form submissions in a single custom dimension?

You can't. Unless you are ok to have them sent as one value, e.g. "form 1, form 2". But then you will see "form 1, form 2" in reports as a value as well. If that's not ok, then you would need to send two separate events
