When you want to install Google Analytics 4, you will see two options: via Google Tag Manager or via Global Site Tag (gtag.js). Which one to choose?
In this video, I will explain everything you need to know.
In a nutshell, I always recommend choosing Google Tag Manager because it’s a powerful and flexible tool. With gtag.js, you will need to either edit the website’s code by yourself or constantly ask a developer to implement new changes.

Hi Julius, I have GTM, added GA4 Configuration via tag, but that GA4 configuration loads gtag script which confuses me. So eventually I'll have GTM and gtag script loaded for my web page.

gtag is a tracking code library. It is used by ga3 and ga4. And when it comes to ga3 vs ga4, there are way too many differences to explain this in a single comment.

Thanks Julius! Just wondering, could there be any difference in performance for each option? For example, if you're only using tracking for Analytics and Google Ads, the gtag might be faster to load, which could improve Core Web Vitals and potentially organic visibility.

This is something that you could test yourself with pagespeed tests. My tests show that usually tracking codes in GTM have a little less impact on speed compared to hardcoded snippets

You cannot track checkout steps in Shopify standard with GTM or any other similar tool that does not have the direct integration with Shopify
