Hello from Poland Julian! Thank you A LOT for clarifying this one. I always questioned myself what was the true difference between gtag.js, analytics.js, Tag Manager and so on. I remember reading Google documentation a couple of times, but the way you put it "gtag is a mini version of Tag Manager" is so simple and clear that I'll just never forget. As usual, the uniqueness of your channel, breaking down technical matters into simple concepts. Keep it up with the incredible job! I think where GTAG shines is when you use a different tag manager such as Adobe Launch. You can place gtag simply by installing a single launch extension.

I use gtagjs as it allows me full control on what's being tracked. If you know code, you can benefit from using either gtagjs or dataLayer.push and define advanced events, errors and custom pageviews in your code. For example you can track the types of errors in your forms, actions on your video or audio player... If you have charts or maps in your site you can track what's happening inside the charts/maps...

Well I would say, always install GTM. You've done it once, you won't need to change anything in the future in the code of your pages. It's a lot easier this way.

thank you very much for explaining the differences. Very useful. Question: how would one go about merging the Google site tag with a new google tag setup for a website to avoid any duplication? So if our platform doesn't provide an area where we can copy the GTM code into the Gtag javascript, how would one go about merging?

Can 2 tag managers be installed? Because clients have suppliers like we do SEO and they have another merchant for amazon.

Great tutorial, Julian, as usual. I was removed GTM and put back gTag because I couldn't install the anti-flicker required by google experiment. Could you advice how can resolve such a scenario. Thanks

you just use GTM and put in the Optimize tag. The anti flicker needs to be installed outside of GTM anyways

So it means we deploy GTM code on all pages once, and then manage all tags from within GTM. If I want to add a new tag I don't need to touch the website code, right? Thanks for the great video.

There is 1 GIANT caviot: Caching I found that on wordpress the big tools like wp-rocket will only properly cache google analytics tags. if you use google tag manager, you will get bugs.

here's why this is absurd: GTM is being used by people who have no business using it. they don't write code. they find trash on the internet and shove it into GTM and create overly elaborate completely unnecessary scenarios. so the only people who should be using GTM in the first place are coders, and the paradox is "coders wouldn't use a WYSIWYG like GTM" Google made only one mistake: there should have been a gtag() config to simply add on GTM but you cannot push GTM through gtag() config. so it's created this horrible mess where 7 out of 10 websites have horrible GTM implementations that should have been done with the global site tag to begin with it's not all that hard to copy and paste a Facebook urchin or push a side by side SxS JavaScript conversion that sends the conversion data to both gtag(), The Facebook API and Even the enhanced conversions API from Google but all of this is a giant mess now for one simple reason: Google did not create a configuration GTag push for GTM container IDs it's absurd.

complete nonsense, GTM is only superior for those who don't write code. The simple elegant gtag() function can be used with any JavaScript you can imagine.
