A great hand where SquishMyTomato calls in. He and Bart have a high level poker theory discussion as it relates to live play leading to another big bluff.
If you want to submit to be on the call-in show email Bart at submissions@crushlivepoker.com. You can also use the coupon code YTA400 at check out for the first 30 days for free at the CrushLivePoker website

Do you think that SquishMyTomato should go for it here with a check raise bluff to try to get his opponent off of AK?

Normally, No, but it worked here so why not lmao. Im snapping with AK all day. Youre losing to 55 AA which you block A6 which you block and quads. Yeah, im snapping. And nobody is ending up with 34 here so enough of that. I cant believe villain folded.

Indeed as Bart said the mistake was made by villain when he bet for value with AK here... I know, it's very difficult not to think about value here with AK, but the overbet turn gave a solid hint of the opponent hand: or a missed draw(he won't call your value bet river), or a reaaaaaaly strig hand that may check-raise you. The real question here from villain's perspective should be: What range will my opponent overbet the turn with that I can value river with AK?

Hero starts this hand by saying how 'bad' this villain is. He then makes a play based on player tendencies and live intangibles informed only slightly by ranges. Other than a discussion of the villains face-up lines where he somehow always bets hearts and overpairs on the flop, we don't really have enough information. How is the villain 'bad' ? IMO a bold line uninformed by the reasons why Hero pulls the trigger here other than 'likes to have fun'.

How often a bad player is going to fold AK on that board with Hero's high level theory? I thought these advanced plays work against analytical players not bad players. Even a good player is going to look him up on the river often. hero's line at best works against a scared money but Scared money is not going to bet with AK on the river.
@andya7964
@andya7964 3 жыл бұрын
I think this was a good play but its really exploitatively targeting a very specific type of player. You have to trust him to be willing to bet fold the river with AK. Also, our range is very bluff heavy. Based on the callers assumptions the plan on the turn is to bet big on turn and river. We're not expecting him to fold river, which is why we checked. So any hand that beats AK probably doesn't get here because it bets river. So we're counting on the opponent to be "good enough" to bet fold AK, but not good enough to figure out that we're so bluff heavy. Again, I like the play, but its a don't try this at home type of thing, unless you know your opponent.

Depends, there are definitely people that take this line with the absolute nuts because they want the missed heart and straight draws to bet river. Granted it is a little weirder to do that after HJ checks behind on the flop but especially if the villain had the Ah or Kh it is a bit harder to call. As for the 38% bet I assume a lot of AQ and AK will just call no? At least as many as are checking behind.
@mrx7181
@mrx7181 3 жыл бұрын
@@qazzaqstan I was talking from the AKo POV. If I was the guy with AKo and it checks to me on the river, I bet 38% and call a raise. And yeah I agree that it's a possibility that I'm being trapped here, but it's just not all that likely.
@qazzaqstan
@qazzaqstan 3 жыл бұрын
@@mrx7181 oh okay my bad, yeah I agree with the 38% bet size it is much harder to to fold to a raise because your bet screams thin value which could induce more bluffs. 75% just seems big for that, there I'm really starting to question if we are getting trapped by a boat because they certainly don't believe we have 1.

excellent commentary! ... i've been playing in a $5/10 NL game since the reopening of my local card room back in October of 2020 and pretty much crushing it ... stack sizes are usually similar to the stakes described in the hand you discuss here and in trying to analyze why i keep seeing sizable pots come my way i'm thinking the following: 1) i maintain an image of not playing like a nit by occasionally calling fairly large pre-flop bets and getting heads-up with marginal to bad holdings and then showing the table when i can't continue or i get aggressive with a low pocket pair pre-flop and continue on a bad flop then show the pocket 3s, for example, that two players folded to my big continuation bet 2) if i'm set mining and hit my bottom set, for instance, i'll maintain more patience and disguise the strength of my hand by check-calling and allowing more cards to come out on the board which puts me at risk of losing the hand but as they say 'higher risk - higher reward' 3) closely studying my opponents and taking notes about hands and discussing with good poker-playing friends 4) not playing super long sessions (usually leaving after 3-5 hours and telling the other players "i've got to answer emails for work" or something similar) so as not to put my $1,500 to $2,500 profit at risk ... it feels incredible to be on a winning trend these past several months - it helps how you feel personally and it also alters the way other poker players regard you ... thanks again for this great content Bart because it really helps improve my game !!!

Should the villian have overbet AK on the river, or should the villain have made a smaller bet? There was a lot of interesting discussion in this video, but one thing that wasn't talked about is what sizing the villain should have taken and what the villain's sizing on the river says about his hand strength. I think AK is probably the bottom of the villain's range here. I can't really see overbetting with anything worse than AK, and I think even AK might be a bit thin to be using for an overbet on the river. With the overbet by the hero on the turn, what hands is AK trying to get called by when he overbets the river?

Great bluff put ace king in a really tough spot I would only base my decision based on the player it was against. I think hero has all the boats here, 5s 6s 2s ace 6 even 65s Reasoning a good player is gonna check to original raiser hoping to check raise or trap and when raiser checks turns ace it looks like u r trying to get max value off an ace which u were haha the river situation Is the only fishy spot but probably why you shouldn't bet river not planning to call raise because its almost a bluff catcher after the over bet. You do beat a5 a2 maybe aq aj thats really it, but I don't see this being done with aq or aj often.

6:10 Ok you’re 3 handed in a single pre flop raised pot. The flop goes J, 6, 2 rainbow and the action checks around on the flop. Then, the turn is a King why is it strange for the small blind to lead out? The SB can easily have have some 22 or 66 or K2s/K6s in their range. Why is it considered strange for them to bet and try to get value from their hand in this exact situation l?
@mycommentpwnz
@mycommentpwnz 3 жыл бұрын
Makes plenty of sense for the blind to lead the turn, after a checked flop, on a board of ( J 6 2 )( K ). Why can't I represent a king? What, are you implying that KQ/KJ is a highly probable check or check-raise from the UTG player? That's a ridiculous notion. And, KQ / KJ are EXACTLY the type of hands people call with preflop if they're closing the action. In this hypothetical situation that you've ascribed to being nonsensical, you can lead some of your strong kings (or better) and your A10/Q10. This is balanced and a totally solid strategy.

Kinda reminds me of the tom dwam bluff with against the trip 2’s 95% of the pot was his money makes no sense! I guess he definitely knew his opponent here! I also think players should know what they are doing before hand when making a play! If you’re not that confident on AK, why bet 70% pot, then fold to a raise! If I bet for value, I’m most likely calling, specially with a board like this! If I’m concerned of a check raise or jam bet smaller! Idk this hand made no sense! Btw, a lot of ppl not folding here, the guy must be a nit! Facts
