Analyzing Your Strengths & Weaknesses in Tekken [Fundamentals]

I had this idea of breaking down Tekken into simple Fundamental Building Blocks one day while I was writing a script for a Korean Backdash Movement Guide. It started with just talking about movement, but then I began having good ideas concerning other areas of Tekken--and thus this video started coming together. I hope this video is not too boring/tedious ( I'm really bad at talking on the spot =) )--but yea these are my thoughts/ interpretations of what are the core Fundamentals of Tekken and how you can use them to analyze your strengths and weaknesses in the game--ultimately making yourself grow as a player in the long run.
TEKKEN FUNDAMENTAL BUILDING BLOCKS
Foundation: The Mind and The Soul
Layer #1: Reactions & Guessing
Layer #2: Frame Data & Spacing
Layer #3: Offensive/Defensive Options & Movement
Layer #4: Esoteric Tekken Knowledge
Layer #5: Mind Games
REMEMBER, all these things mean nothing if you don't Train hard and Believe in yourself. Practice practice practice, always practice. Theory is useless without application (I think Bruce Lee said something along those lines ^_^).
P.S: One huge thing I left out in this video is Lateral movement aka Sidestepping. But I guess you guys can sorta fill in the gaps from my movement + spacing segments.
Buy: goo.gl/P88Zi2 -- Eightarc Fusion Ivory from Qanba
If you're interested in the stick I'm using it's a dual modded stick designed to work on PS3/Xbox360. It also has legacy support on PS4 fighting games such as T7, SFV, KOF14, GG, BB, MKX, and IJ2 etc. I highly recommend this fight stick, I've been using it years and it's served me well ^_^.

great video man. helps scrubs like me a lot. me? i lose matches because my reactions are shit, my guessing game is ok, my frame data is ok, my movement is ok, my spacing and distance judgement is shit, got a few gimmicks in my bag ive picked up from playing the game for so long... and the worst thing is that my execution is shit. like it's so shit that i stick with shit execution characters cuz i cant rely on my execution with hard input chars if my game depended on it. this video helped me look at what dimensions of my game i can still work on and still have room to improve. for a while i though ' meh im stuck at this level forever - i have the knowledge but my body just cant keep up for shit.' this video made me see 'hey - there's some room for growth after all. imma work on my reactions then, and spacing next - and then ill go from there.' thanks very much, man.

Wow. You're a really good teacher. This video is super chill as well. Nice backgroud music, and above all, it really gets me thinking. I think most semi-new tekken players have heard about tekken fundamentals, but up until now, I've never actually seen it on paper. Honestly speaking, Tekken is incredibly deep and its' presentation is really good. It's got interesting characters and all that. Even if T7 kinda screwed up on some other things, I think I'll be a big fan of tekken in the forseeable future.

I think what makes reflexing in Tekken so difficult is because it requires the player to know almost exactly what sort of moves the opponent's character has. Your reflex will be much better if you know what sort of thing that you're looking, rather than not having any clue what to expect. For example, if somebody going to throw rock, paper, and scissors randomly, and you have to clap whenever he throws a scissor, you would be able to do it easily because you have the visual information about (scissor), hence you know what to expect or what to look for (aside from the fact that it only has a very narrow variables). While in Tekken, you do know that every character going to throw a high/mid/low attacks, but not necessarily through what kind of moves the attacks would be implemented, hence it would be harder to reflex an attack cause the player don't know exactly what to expect. I think that's why it took some time or even years to master this game. It requires database of, not only your main, but also other characters as well in order to be able to implement a proper defense & offense.

top quality vid no joke, this video is very specific about fighting games and specifically tekken but this can be applied to any competitive game. You isolate the core skills, you mix them with game knowledge, plus experience and then final factor that determines with you win or lose is the your mental and physical state. Brilliant video and I don't exaggerate when I say that. Subscribed!

Thankyou Cuttcc, I am a long time Tekken fan, since 1994, and now coming into my first online version. I have watched many video tutorials in the last month, and would highly recommend Aris's videos (avoidingthepuddle), but this presentation is the best I have seen so far to help me understand where I am going wrong and where to focus to improve my game against actual huuman. Praise for being so informative about levels of cognition and the difference between Instinct vs Data.

Great video and a great take home message. It helps to know your strengths of your gameplay not only to work on weaknesses, but to celebrate progress. I feel that new players at times give up or develop a bad attitude because they have no strengths to personally recognize and need something else to validate their progress aka the arbitrary belt color of rank mode.

Fantastic video. Helpful, and a really pleasant vibe. I'd say my line of thinking when it comes to playing/improving at Tekken (or fighting games in general) is pretty much on the same wavelength as yours, though I've never put it into words as eloquently as I feel you did. Went on tilt at the arcade today after losing to a string of what *felt* at the time like relentless uncontrollable spammy opponents, but ultimately was too blinded by the sheer fact that I was getting beat to take a step back and analyze why I was getting hit when I was, and what methods I could use to turn the situation in my favor. After all that, stumbling on this video worked as a fantastic refresher. Maybe I'll get that pyramid tattood on my chest.

I think that garbage move or not, each move is good to know and has its place. You even see JCDR whip out some 'garbage' tier moves sometimes. Learning moves is the easiest thing so there's no reason to not know all of them.

There's too many moves. It would be a waste of time. You can pick stuff up along the way and just use spacing and movement. Find out which way to step characters.
@hiverhythm
@hiverhythm 7 жыл бұрын
You bring up a good point. Learning which way to step characters and other match up information is a better use of time. But I just prefer to know all the moves of someone (not that I have ever finished learning someones moveset yet.) But you know if I get really good at the game I'm only going to be using the optimal moves, the ones that are safe, etc. and 80% of the movelist will go unused. Ultimately you are very much correct. It is my preference to learn all the moves.

Cheers m8. Your video doesn't have a lot of views but your articulate language and choice of topic here really makes for an outstanding video. Also bonus points for the little Tekken pyramid graph.
