Today's episode is a continuation of our Analyzing Your Weaving Project discussion. But this week, I'm tackling the non-technical aspects.
What does that mean, you ask? Well, were there parts of the process that technically went well, but you didn't enjoy them? Maybe you discovered that you don't like long projects or tiny stripes or lengthy repeats.
Or maybe you found parts of the process you really love! Like, using 2 shuttles or sewing the fabric or incorporating complicated threadings. There is no wrong answer! Just capture your experience so you can make great decisions going forward.
pssst... Do you love a good worksheet? I've created a .pdf all about analyzing the non-technical sides of your weaving project. To grab your copy, simply sign up to become a paid member of the Acton Creative Insiders membership. It's waiting for you! Click here to become a member - / actoncreative

Thanks for the evaluation questions, especially finding out what kind of weaving you like to do.

I agree with every word!! Thanks for the video 💗 As I was hearing to you, I couldn't avoid thinking I'd like to see the books you have on your back... Maybe you can share in the future a Handwoven Experience in which you show them? 🙏😍

I can't tell you how many looms I have saved from basements, dark barns, sheds, or garages and refurbished and found new homes for that had a 'I give up project' on them. Usually it is a first time weaver that has started with something that is far too elaborate for their, yet to be developed, skill set - and it sets them back or they give up altogether. Usually they do not want to ask for help or try again. I have found the most common problem to be poor warping skills or the tedium of dressing the loom. The most recent was a 36” Leclerc Nilus Low Castle Floor Loom- 4 harness. She purchased it in 2022 and went all in. What was left on the loom was a very long draft, overshot. That is certainly NO Project to start with. I was sad that she gave up on weaving, but I've done this too many times to try to convince people to stick with it anymore. (I find many online tutorials (NOT YOURS) only show the edited videos and the easy bits, and golden outcome, and like so many other things, they lead people down a misinformed path.)

Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm always sad when people have a bad experience with weaving or a weaving instructor. But I'll be ready if they decide they want to try again!

Exactly. But the only thing I ask them now when I do a loom pick up is, 'Are you SURE you're done?" Usually they tell me the story of why they quit on their own, but I no longer listen to the story and then try to correct their error and get them back to wanting to weave. By the time they're selling the loom, they're sick of trying and looking at it. @@ActonCreative

I have an example to share. I'm doing a hemp set to kitchen towels. the warp is two color and the weft is the same two colors. I got , maybe, 1/4 of the way into the first towel and I came to the realization that this fiber is NOT good for a delicate pattern. So, I have had to weave another header and select a bolder pattern. Oh well. Lesson learned.

This probably goes back more to part 1: Just finished beaming my loom for the next project - 8 yards worth of hand towels intended as gifts for some major University of Georgia fans. Once I stood back, the color arrangement stuck out and could potentially be interpreted as resembling a certain flag from the past. UGH! So I'm back in Fiberworks playing with different threadings, tie-ups, and treadlings trying to make that disappear. Tossing out that much yarn wouldn't make me happy, but also having that symbolism attached to my name isn't acceptable. Double Ugh!

Oh no! Scott, can it be repurposed somehow? I realize that sometimes the best option is to start from scratch, but if the project or the intention could be modified, there could be a way to still use it. Keep us posted!
