Long ago, Jealousy kept himself hidden away from the world to guard his bride. But when Anansi stole Jealousy's wife through trickery, Jealousy no longer had any reason to stay in his empty village and entered every person's heart including Anansi. This is how Anansi became jealous of his neighbor Dew and how his own tricks came back to haunt him.

For everyone talking about corn being in this myth, I invite you to please remember 2 things: 1. Myths grow and change, so it is possible an older version of this myth included a different crop 2. Corn was brought to Africa in the 1500s, that's 500 years for a myth to emerge (or change from a previous version)

An important note, 'Jealousy' in this tale is actually the personification of envy, and not jealousy. Envy is about wanting something instead of someone else, whereas jealousy is about wanting something too. If you are envious about someone's icecream you want to take it from them. If you are jealous about someone's icecream you want to get some from where they did.

In some cultures, to willingly kill someone who's bound solely by trust is much worse than killing someone whose trust is sort of a given, and so committing evil with cold-blooded intent is much worse than committing evil while driven by passions. @richmcgee434
@richmcgee434 4 жыл бұрын
I would love to know where they sourced this from, I've never seen it told as one tale. It's normally two different and largely unconnected stories, although they both touch on jealousy as a theme. The first one (Ananasi getting Aso away from Akwasi/Jealousy) is so truncated as to be almost unrecognizable, and leaves out a ton of background including all of Spider's numerous trickster stunts. Anansi doesn't "run off" with Aso - he impregnates her and leaves, with Akwasi deciding to bring her Anansi's home village after he discovers the pregnancy later. Akwasi winds up with further embarrassments on getting there and eventually winds up giving Aso to Spider, and their child is sacrificed and its remains scattered around the village - which probably has some deep meaning that I've yet to see adequately explained. The second story is basically intact, but this is the only time I've seen it folded into a meta-narrative that explicitly mentions jealousy as some sort of personified entity getting revenge. Akwasi as the literal incarnation of Jealousy feels really weird to me. He's jealous in his parent tale, not capital-J Jealousy.

Anansi just gets in a whole bunch of trouble doesn't he? BTW I love the Jeff Goldblum narration of him. At least it sounds that way to me.

Is that the British meaning of Corn, that is any grain, or is it the Anglo-American meaning, Maize? The corn depicted would be a new world domesticate.

Considering when these stories first wound up, the 'corn' that is being reffered to here would most probably have been either rye, barley or millet. And you're right, maize/corn is a colonial neophyte.

I was curious about that too. How old can these stories be if they involve maize in Africa?
@ImperativeGames

It was, like, Haitian/American version of the old tale. After Africans were enslaved they were transported by English slavers to the New World... They kept some of the culture.

JEALOUSY is when you are afraid of losing or someone taking something you already have, ENVY is wanting something that someone else has. Drives me crazy when people use these words interchangeably when that isn't accurate at all. Same thing with Mortified. People use Mortified (meaning incredibly embarrassed) when they really mean horrified. I've even heard a true crime KZfaqr say someone who discovered a murdered person as Mortified. Ugh please don't use words if you don't know what they mean.

Yeah, it can be very hard to remember what word to use and what word not to use, but I agree. The more accurate the words you use, the smarter you sound.
