Follow MprooV on Twitter / mproovapp #agadmator The 12th Annual Linares Super Tournament held from February 23rd to March 14th, 1994 was the first Category XVIII event ever held. Fourteen of the world's best players, including both World Champions, competed in a round robin format. The participants were (in order of Elo): Garry Kasparov (2805), Anatoli Karpov (2740), Alexey Shirov (2715), Vishwanathan Anand (2715), Vladimir Kramnik (2710), Vassily Ivanchuk (2710), Gata Kamsky (2695), Boris Gelfand (2685), Evgeny Bareev (2685), Alexander Beliavsky (2650), Veselin Topalov (2640), Judit Polgar (2630), Joel Lautier (2625), and Miguel Illescas-Cordoba (2590). When asked about the strength of the tournament, Kasparov famously stated that the winner could consider himself the world champion of tournament chess. Ironically, it was to be Karpov, his longtime rival, who would be the man of destiny, culminating in the greatest single tournament performance of all time! Karpov won the whole ball of wax, undefeated with an astonishing 11/13!!

This is the tournament where Karpov went undefeated scoring 11/13. It was one of his greatest achievements finishing ahead of Kasparov, Ivanchuk, Kramnik, Topalov, Shirov, Gelfand, Lautier, Bareev, Illescas, Judit, and Beliavsky crushing the field.

Personally my favourite Karpov game is the one he played against Kavalek, Nice 1974. Beautiful illustration of good Bishop vs. Bad Bishop. In this tournament he also played a very effective Ba7 against Unzicker. Great show.

When Karpov offered trade of queens pawn on b3 was hanging for 2 moves why did Judit not take it? And I think Judit was 17 or 18 at that time not 14.

BxN KxN Qc5+ and White gets his pawn back with interest. After the knight moves, Qxb3 is met by Qxc6 which is just winning.

I think those who played in that tournament were strong Grandmasters. Therefore, Judit Polgar must have been a grandmaster, too. Considering she got the grandmaster title when she was 15 years old (a little bit younger than Bobby Fischer when he got that title), she definitely was not 14 years old. In fact, Judit Polgar was born in 1976.

Judit Polgar was born in July 1976, so she was 17 years old, soon to turn 18. She is the strongest woman in chess history so far. Karpov on the other hand played in the Linares tournament 1994 like you would expect it from a player with mor than 3000 Elo. He was 43 years old and this shows, what his potential really was and why even Bobby Fischer was afraid he might eventually lose in the 1975 world championship. I think, that if Fischer played Karpov in 1975, Fischer would likely have won, but only one point ahead or so. And Karpov would certainly have grown with this challenge and maybe we would have seen an even stronger version of him, who would have tried again in 1978... But Fischer refused to play...

Dude , Fischer would have easily defeated KARPOV in 1975 and if Fischer had decided to be an active Champ he would also have beaten KARPOV in 1978 as well.. Remember KARPOV defeated 47 years old KORCHNOI with great difficulties 6:5 in Manila.. Many Chess buffs are certain KORCHNOI could have won the match had he played a more solid defence instead of risking a Pirc defence in game 32 .... Fischer beats KORCHNOI hands down anytime anywhere after 1972 ! 3000 Elo must be a joke ...

Fischer would have been beaten by Karpov back in 1975 he knew this and that's why he refused to play him prefering to forfeit his championship and denying chess fans of the world some great games between the two. It took the emergence of Kasparov a few years later before Karpov had a worthy rival.

@@fulloftruthguardian5420 Nonsense, Karpov was nowhere near Fischer in 1975. Fischer would not have played against anyone in 1975..He said goodbye to Chess after winning the title in 1972. When asked in 1974 who should face Fischer in 1975 Kortschnoi or Karpov?? Spasski said it doesn't matter, neither stand a chance if Fischer plays.

She was only 14 and it's cool how she beat Magnus but how does she get to 2630 and do that rook move and not try to remedy it as well. 2630 is skyhigh for a woman. She would eventually exceed Kramnik's rating and almost Karpov's. I assume this is classical chess so there was plenty of time for each move. I'm just a noob so maybe I'm missing a strategy but given that it becomes her decisive loss maybe not.

3:06 If I remember the rules correctly, castling is a legal move here.

Castling would hang the knight because it's only defended by the king, and if you move the knight castling becomes illegal because of the bishop attacking one of the castling squares
