Anatoly Konstantinovich Lyadov or Liadov (Russian: Анато́лий Константи́нович Ля́дов; 12 May [O.S. 30 April] 1855 - 28 August [O.S. 15 August] 1914) was a Russian composer, teacher and conductor.

Kikimora for orchestra, Op. 63 (1909)
Dedication: Nikolay Tcherepnin (1873-1945)
USSR State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov
Lyadov apparently had a thing for witches: in his brief and desultory career as a composer, he wrote not one but two tone poems for orchestra depicting witches. The first is Baba-Yaga from 1904, a short and pseudo-spooky "picture from a Russian folk tale," and the second is Kikimora, a longer but still pseudo-spooky folk tale. Both are scored for full, late Romantic orchestra with a huge percussion section, including the obligatory xylophone, a prerequisite for evoking rattling skeletons. Like Baba-Yaga, the main body of Kikimora is a Presto replete with chromatic scales, woodwinds wails, and brass blasts. But unlike Baba-Yaga, Kikimora has a dark and moody Adagio introduction with the bleakness and despair of Rachmaninov and the harmonic vagueness of Debussy. Thus, although Kikimora is for the most part merely a re-write of Baba-Yaga, its introduction shows that Lyadov could be more than a procurer for witches.

J'adore, il y a l'âme russe partout dans cette musique avec quelque chose de nostalgique provenant de l'enfance...la magie des contes de fées. ❤

Liadov was quite a gifted composer but today, he's rather forgotten along with many of that time. Liadov, D'Indy, Lalo, Honneger and a great many others actually are now getting a renaissance thanks to KZfaq!!

Dear Bartje Bartmans, Thank you very much for uploading this! I didn't know much about Lyadov's creation until finding your account. Yes, this is exactly Kikimora. Baba Yaga is just a hungry old witch, lonely and irritated, almost mad, that is angry to the whole world, because nobody loves her, so, she does bad things. I would like to listen to Lyadov's "Baba Yaga" too, have you got it on your channel? Kikimora is completely different character -- not a witch, but unique tale monstre, who lives on swamp and laughs making all sort of small (and sometimes quite dangerous and even deadly) dirty tricks, such as pushing people into the swamps's slime, from where it is difficult to come back, or distracting them by "swamp lights" (methan) etc.etc. (If I'm not mistaken, she can be invisible for people). He makes friendship with Leshiy, but Leshiy (lives in the forest) doesn't make such direct things, but makes people get lost in the wood, to not recognize the place etc. That's all very interesting. Unfortunately, I don't remember it well enough -- a good opportunity to reread some of Russian tales, not necessarily folk ones (for example, these relationships are well shown in Aksakov's "Red flower", if I remember correctly). And this piece reflects perfectly and ingenuously all these things: dark swamp, Kikimora hiding, making his tricks and laughing etc. etc. Impressive! So, thank you again very much for sharing this masterpiece and getting me more familiar with the creation of mr. Lyadov! I should certainly search for more of him. Best wishes on this your good and important destination of showing us excellent, but someimes not widely known musical compositions! Sincerely yours, Ivan P

Stravinsky was hired by Diaghilev after Liadov was fired by Diaghilev for not producing a score within certain time requirements. This is how Stravinsky got his big break and eventually composed Firebird.

@@mikeklimczak9600 Yeah, I have heard murmurings of that for many years. I'm inclined to believe it was true but every time I mention it to someone, they say "there's never been any proof of that, and Diaghilev was never that close with Liadov whereas he was Stravinsky's distant cousin."
