Hi, new subscriber here. You touched on a long-standing confusion I have had with ThruLines that confirmed my suspicion but glossed over the critical fundamental "how to" step, leaving me clueless as to how to actually fix it. I have both my DNA kit and my wife's linked to our joint tree. Mine works fine but hers doesn't, and you confirmed what I suspected the problem was. But at the critical step the video just said "there's a link to fix this" (or words to that effect) but then did not explain how to find that link or what to do with it once there. I gather that I have to create a whole separate, duplicate tree? Can I just create a stub or stem with my wife's name and then link the trees somehow, or do I have to reduplicate all 4000+ people in a standalone tree? Thanks for any insight you can give me!

Why does LifeStories default to siblings being half siblings when you have only one parent in the tree? Maybe you only want to show the blood aunt, blood uncle, etc. Is there a way to get them to be full siblings without adding the other parent?

Devon... Thank you very much for your powerful response. I very much appreciate it. What you said about the possibilities of a Parent Change and Hidden Family Secret makes more sense to me after I called Warren County, TN Library and spoke to a Genealogist there... She said the same thing thing about Hidden Family Secret/s especially when it came down to a particular 4th great grandmother... Never could find any actual proof... so that particularly makes absolute sense. Also, the same thing when I called an Historical Society in Gainesville, Missouri.... The gentleman told me the same exact probable situation about a supposed 3rd great grandpa ( his mother was the one in Question) ok now, it appears it's beginning to be clearer to me since my very own grandma Maude Myrtle Bennett's 2nd great grandpa Thomas Hobert/Hobart ( spelling isn't the best sorry) Lord was born in Christian County, KY 1805 and his supposed mother Milliford Whiting was born 1779-80 ( no one knows where she was born or her parents) and she would have died in Bedford, TN 1827 no one knows her grave.. her supposed husband( father of Thomas H Lord) was born 1775 in GA ( or Maryland) and re-married to a Elizabeth Baumgarner in Rutherford, TN 1829 so yes, something is fishy for sure. Also, I noticed Thomas Lord's middle name Hobert or Hobart wasn't it a usual thing that a son's middle name was either a Mother's surname or else a Grandparent's surname? Lastly, Thomas lord's sister Rebecca Lord was born 1807 also in Christian County, KY while all the remaining siblings were all born in Coffee County, TN and it all makes sense why my grandma's Mtdna test had a few matches but all those women were related to her father's Bennett line. Maybe that is what could be explained by HIDDEN -SECRET PARENT ? Thank you Devon for your suggestions earlier !

Thanks for sharing your struggles. Hobert or Hobart doesn't necessarily mean it's a mother's surname. It all depends on the naming traditions of specific families (and their likeliness of following it).

Lots of good info, but The most important thing was @11:29 mark. I actually have two families that people continually add the wrong info in their trees (mixing of unrelated people with similar names) because the copied from other faulty trees. I too have spent years trying to correct this error..I even added a tree for one of these wrong families to prove that they are not related to my line...YET Ancestry suggested them as a potential ancestor...using that very same tree I uploaded proving there is no connection LOL

Thanks for all the info. It is very helpful, but the problem I am having is in helping an elderly (89 year old) DNA relative find out how we are related. He reached out to me & I know from mutual DNA relatives that we are related thru my maternal grandfather who is a Keith. I then hit a wall, a hard, brick one as all our mutual relatives led nowhere. I asked him to add my 3rd ggparents to his tree to see if it would create a thru line (at that time it was DNA Circle) and got no luck. His daughter also placed my 3rd ggparents in her tree & I notice she now shows a ThruLine to these relatives. My question, do the ThruLines and DNA matches always go together or am I wasting time in trying to put these DNA relatives into my family by using the deceased grandparents where I think the DNA relative may fall? I always believed the DNA and the ThruLine would have to be consistent, but now I am not so sure.

Hello Devon... I have a question about thru-lines. If there are ZERO matches showing for thru lines when I get the ancestors in the 1700's, could this mean at that point in my suspected ancestor/s that I put onto Ancestry.com mean I have the wrong people as my ancestor/s or could it be that I am (cousins as well) the only family related to these ancestors of the 1700's? Boy, I sure hope you or someone on this comment section can answer this ! I am also guessing that Thru lines might be the key to confirmation about suspected ancestor's relation that I put down in my tree. Is that pretty much correct? Enjoyed your lesson today.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 4 жыл бұрын
The questions shouldn't be the year of the ancestor but the generation. Let's start there. Which generation are you trying to see an ancestor that's from the 1700s?

Devon, to answer your question... it's my 5th generation 3rd great grandparent born 1763 York, SC..and 6th gen 4th great grandparents and 7th generation great grandparents 5th great grandparents in North Carolina and SC they had been from County Down, Northern Ireland...then on to Lancaster, PA and on south to NC and SC then finally down to TN and MO. Not one person is claiming them except myself ! This is why I had asked my original question wondering if they could be a wrong ancestor ! Thanks Devon.

You're still working with the the possibilities of genetic matches. I have a video that will be addressing why you don't have a ThruLine in different parts of your tree. Short summary: 1. You have a mistake in your tree 2. Your matches have a mistake in their tree 3. You or your matches do not have enough identifying information in your DNA linked tree. 4. Your DNA relatives have not tested. These are the top possibilities but it's also possible that your paper trail research is accurate (or that of your DNA matches) but there was an unexpected parental change (i.e. a hidden family secret).

In my tree, I see several ancestors that have the ThruLines icon on their tree entry; but, when I get all excited about the possibility of new insight and ask to view their ThruLines, all I see is me. Why? I thought the ThruLines icon was an indication that there was someone that had DNA that connected to this entry (other than me) - if not, what does it really mean?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 3 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. I haven't been able to reproduce this. Typically, the ThruLines I have will have at least one other person (which is typically my brother or aunts). Now, there might be a condensing of the ThruLine tree. If if you expand certain parts you'll the other matches (usually my aunts are hidden). You might have to click around a bit.

I have the DNA results of several people linked to my public Ancestry Family Tree, and not all are direct line ancestors. If I want to take advantage of the power of Thru-Lines for these people, do I need to unlink myself and link each, one at a time, to that tree?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 4 жыл бұрын
It is my understanding that you can only link one DNA test to one tree in ThruLines. I could be wrong, but that's what I've been told. Each test result is supposed to be in separate accounts, but you can manage them (you need to grant that access in each account) and you can navigate between them as well (I do this with the accounts that I have managing access to).

Is this what you want or what you've discovered? Ancestry has added the feature to show a few different paths to a DNA match. I am actually finding that they are updating at least current Thrulines fairly quickly, like in minutes. I am currently going through my matches and seeing which ones are in my tree and which ones are not. And some of them should be in my tree (or at least their parents/grandparents) but I haven't worked on that line. So for example one DNA cousin whom I have message I know where we are connected. I have family genealogies down to her dad in my possession, but I have never inputted the information into my tree. So I did. And now it is showing the full line. Another one I was working and there were two sisters and I just could not find who they married or an obituary that mentioned their married names but for some reason on the match page I clicked on the common ancestor. And now the match's mother's name showed up because now it was in my tree. And this was like not even fifteen minutes since I updated the tree. Granted, that Thruline was already there so it was just flipping from the private information on my match's tree to what information is in my tree. But it is a trick I am now using in my research, though I would only trust it at the parent level for the match.

Does a tree linked to your DNA results need to be public to use ThruLines? Both my husband and I have our DNA linked to private trees and ThruLines shows only ancestors from our own trees (not common to other testers), which is pretty useless as of course we already know we are related to the people in the trees we constructed. Thank you,

My only issue with ThruLines right now is that it is adding the ThruLine icon on my family view and pedigree view to my step-mother even though we are NOT a DNA match. My mother passed away when I was a teenager, so I don't have her DNA. I do, however, have my step-mother's DNA. I added her in my tree as the 2nd wife to my father to show my connection to my half-brother, and I have his DNA as well. I also double-checked to make sure I am still showing as the child of the correct couple. When I go into the ThruLines section of Ancestry, it does show my mother and the correct ancestors there. I don't know how to get that ThruLines icon to go to my ancestor (my mother) so that it will flow correctly in my tree views. If anyone else has this issue to know what is causing it or how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it.

We will be discussing this in a forthcoming video, but yes, Ancestry ThruLines are genealogical lines not genetic lines and it's tough to pivot when there is a step-parent, adopted parents, etc. Have you identified your step-mother as such and your mother as your biological mother using the edit relationships form?
@vagal2312

@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Thanks for the reply! I do realize that Ancestry ThruLines are genealogical, but I didn't know if by adding the DNA to my step-mother and not my mother that it caused the display to skew somehow. I do have everyone's relationships setup correctly (just checked those again) and even double-checked in my Family Tree program in case it was syncing something that was incorrect to my Ancestry tree. I just can't find the issue. I may have to delete my step-mother from my tree to see if it changes over as it should and then add her back later. Thanks so much for all your sharing on this channel. I greatly appreciate the hard work of you both.

You'll find that many people have undocumented (no records) attached to their trees because they are either lazy (they don't take time to add sources) or uninterested in documents. There are a few that have unsourced trees that have are based on genealogy sources but they don't share those sources publicly because they don't want people to 'steal' their research. There is a greater likelihood that they don't have the answers you seek because they didn't do quality research. However, one could hope they haven't responded because they're on a fabulous vacation or in the hospital recovering from surgery (or the birth of triplets). When they have a chance they can respond. All of this aside, use their tree as a clue. Do the paper research that could validate the research. If you can't find records supporting the theories, you can temporarily disregard the potential ancestor until more information becomes available (or the person with the tree responds.)

If you're building your tree for genetic genealogy, yes. That's the only way to possibly get the ThruLines to work. However, if others don't have your mother's biological name on their tree and you don't have her parents or grandparents on your tree, ThruLines still won't work because they're based on what people have in their tree. However, as you add biological relatives for your mother, you should see ThruLines work. Good luck. Thanks for the quesiton.
