Epic work, Steve. Greatly influenced my choice, positively I should add, through your educational and thoughtful subject treatment. Your videos should ostensibly be required viewing for would-be sailors, and it's hard to comprehend why there's relatively few subscribers given the duration and content of this channel. No matter -- keep up the great work!

Hey Steve. Thanks for all the videos you’ve put out. I’ve followed you for years and because of you bought a Spade anchor. I remember one of your videos years ago you had changed over to the Spade after testing it. My question is now that you’ve tested dozens of anchors do you still have a Spade on your boat or have you moved onto something else? I’m in the PNW so have the same cruising grounds as you. Although I love my Spade and it has performed flawlessly, I’m thinking of buying a Vulcan as a second anchor. Again, thanks for the effort.

@Brian Whalen I have had a volcan for four years now. This anchor has my complete trust and it has never dragged one inch. It saved my boat in a short scope drop approaching a bridge in a narrow channel . The motor stalled and I had To drop anchor 300 feet from the bridge With 3 knots of current pushing me at the bridge. Absolutely the worst possible timing. I droped the volcan less then 3to1 it grabbed like hitting the breaks.

Man, that sounds like my luck! Glad it grabbed for you! I still need a back up anchor and would like to diversify a little… but the Vulcan has been bomb proof so far. I have a 73lb on an 88 H45 Legend, what weight and for what boat are you running?

Great videos, a lot of work and dedication, i dont agree totaly with your opinions and ways to test diferent anchor types, but you do great job and make people think what is the best anchor to them, that is never the best anchor in the world, because that is something that dont exist.

Great compilation Steve! I was at the METS recently and looked at a new version of the Rockna, called Rockna mk2. Both the fluke, roll bar and shank were much changed. To me it looked like significant improvements. The fluke looks more inspired by the Ultra anchor, and probably Spade. Looks like the Rockna is now both a ballasted and a roll bar anchor. The roll bar has a sharp leading edge, to improve penetration. The shank is not a cutout of a flat plate anymore, but an I-beam like on the Vulcan. Also a sharp leading edge. Would be interesting to see you test it.

Great videos, I have watched several of your videos. Any suggestions for mossy lakes in the pacific north west. One of the challenges I have ran into is pulling up a 20 pound anchor and having 20 pounds of moss.

Fantastic recap many thanks Steve. Any chance of a comparison test of the Mantus M2 55lbs some time soon? The 55lbs anchors need some attention or they get lonely! Many thanks.

I reckon that I would test pretty much anything provided that I had a genuine interest and also some unique ability or angle to the testing. The thing that I have with the anchor stuff that others don't, is the stamina (physical, mental, and financial) to commit to this herculean effort.

Love your videos, is there any way you could give us a conversion of thrust to wind speed to give us a real world idea of what anchor would suit our needs. Thanks, Dan

Hi Dan, It is difficult to predict anchor loads to due many variables such as the amount of "yaw" (sailing at anchor) the surface area of the vessel and the elasticity of the rode. Here is a pretty good article that might help you make an approximation: gilwellbear.wordpress.com/2013/07/19/wind-loads-on-the-anchor-rode/

Steve, what's your anchor insight and intuition for an island packet 31 primary anchor and secondary. The boat is full keel 12,000 pounds . The boat is for cruising the Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas. The road will be all chain for one anchor. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
@ryder6070

I trusted a Rocna 15 kg with my life in a similar sized boat. Too many times.... I'm alive....Would have liked a 20kg and more chain. Hope this helps. You will never ever regret a larger anchor. In my opinion, it does not matter what sea/latitude you sail in. Storms can be fun. Anchoring in a storm is wild. Or maybe you die. Leave no stone unturned when preparing, and do not sugar coat the reality that you could die if you fuck up. Fair wind!? haha. Cruise with two functional "main anchors" and at least one secondary. You can store a Danforth/fortress easily off a rail round cockpit. Anchor will be in the ready, allways. Crazy increase in confidence with this setup. It is like an emergency brake. Set this up with your drouge system if that's your protocol. - At anchor now in AK

So your stating that a M1 is better performing than a M2 (comments vs. chart)? But tests show M2 is better. In looking for a Viking 10, but the Ukrainian war is not helping their production.
