Hey Paul, just wanted to say thank you for fostering this space. It has allowed me to clarify my own thinking, be more open about my weird religious beliefs with my evangelical loved ones, and be exposed to Christian thinking and people that challenge and educate me in a healthy way. You helped start that process for me.

In Malta there’s a cave system that was a Roman jail, became a Christian chapel centred around a statue of Paul, and became a bomb shelter in WWII, saving thousands. Being half Maltese I like to think every Maltese character is a relative.

Don't remember you directly plugging living stones before in this way, but I am glad you are doing it. Even the smallest churches leave a much bigger whole in the world than many of us are willing to admit.

Thanks Pastor. One thing this reminded me of was to let go of the outcome. Monks said it, and you reminded that a living stone like Paul does get hit in a city, but the islander's on the other hand are grateful. But, the outcome is beyond us, like Job. Good, bad make a decision, the consequences play out. That makes it fun and terrible, at the same time.

I love this discussion of Job. If you want an interesting tidbit: Karl Marx suffered from a skin disease called HS - a terrible skin disease that dermatologists consider one of the worst afflictions... The synergy: as the skin is the largest organ and it is one of the first to show internal disruptions in our body's wholeness... I also love the Hebrew word used for Job's justification - he speaks to a Go'ali - a redeemer will 'judge him' righteous? Strong's 1350. gaal

Job 19:25-27 New International Version 25 I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. 26 And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; 27 I myself will see him with my own eyes-I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!

2:35 I agree, but Karma is so misunderstood in the west. Begin with karma is action not an external force. It is an internal force: the Buddhist define it well as 'cause and effect'. What ye sow, so shall ye reap. Not so foreign ;) 16:00 _ this discussion is also in Buddhism about Karma - Do we inherit our illness from previous bad lives. In fact this is another misinterpretation of Karma. I explain using the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. It explains that our karma - or the energy that we surround ourselves with - will be the energies we are attracted to in the between stages(bardo - think metempsychosis/transmutation). If you surround yourself with evil in life, you will be surrounded by evil manifestations of your karma(your own thoughts - think regret) and you will be attracted to a negative re-birth(allegorical understandings allowed) rather than the lessons of not being attracted to the negative and embracing the positive avatars of our karma/our life's choices - vicissitudes in English? Galatians 6:7-9 King James Version 7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. 9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Yeah, I was gonna say I thought the bible had lots of karma ideas in it. I've also heard that in most "common religions", there is still the idea that God can absolve you of your karmic debts, but that's just rare.

I've heard it described as "conservation of moral energy"
@alohm
@alohm 16 күн бұрын
@@PaulVanderKlay Was that in a Chinese Buddhist context, where morality is equated with the Tao of Humanity?
@alohm
@alohm 16 күн бұрын
I would agree with this - even compare it to conservation of Ego - prevent ego depletion(something i am not totally in agreement with). That we have two systems of thought - system1 and sys2. Sys1 being unconscious actions, automatic. Sys 2 is like moral or complicated thought. Vervaake explains this partially in his Meaninng crisis: that if you shop regularly for staples: the cashier asking for an expected amount f80-100$ would not require system 2 thought. If she asked for 300$ that would maybe(this is where I differ) cause sys 2 to jump in. I add that if you have a partner and they notice that we got more than staples, and they told us the price was ok - that would not require system 2 thought to accept. We walked about the store in sys1 - our partner lent us their system 2 thinking... I argue like critics: Harold Bloom said he was inferior to many great minds: I argue more important than genius are those 'run of the mill' minds that can explain the beautiful and wondrous to the plebs... “But, if we consider, as physicists now claim, that everything is energy-everything we see, everything we think, everything we do-then it is just possible that this same law of conservation of energy applies to questions of morality. A conservation of moral energy, a maintenance of equilibrium… a balance exists and must be preserved. If an action is taken that disrupts that balance, then an action similar in kind and degree is required to restore equilibrium.” ― J.K. Franko, Eye for Eye

The one thing that we can seek is a clear conscience. Often that means doing what we know is the right thing at the expense our time and attention in the moment. I passionately work six days a week because my sabbath is in the "life to come." I take it easy one day a week as a deposit on that.

The three great musicals of my childhood were the Wizard of Oz, the Jungle Book, and the Sound of Music. I'm absolutely sure that whole "karma" thing flew right past me at age eight, but I played that soundtrack album over and over on my little plastic kid's record player in my room.

SOM soundtrack is still in my folks' record bin. Growing up CRC, movies were discouraged but still allowed. Looking back on it, this freed me up to do things like reading. After all, what else are you going to do during Sunday afternoon nap time? Speaking of which, I'm currently rereading Moby Dick. The book of Jonah and Paul and angering the gods of the sea. Moby Dick is way more than a story about people in a boat hunting a whale.

Your comments on Job made me think there may be a link to @Heliocentric struggles. I have no doubt of his past love of the Lord, I believe he still does. why else get so emotional over churches "getting it wrong"? The rich young man walked away not just for love of $$$ but from his perspective Jesus was asking him to give up his blessings from God. Similarly Heliocentric seemed to be placing too many burdens on himself to get it right. Our blessings are the Lord's, our trials are the Lord's. Surrendering it all to him is a life long process we have to learn over and over to get it out of our heads that it's all on us.
