Ancient Edible Tubers - Even though winter is a cold and dark time, we always look forward to it as there is a wondrous event taking place in the garden. Every year when the first hard frost signals that our growing season is more or less over, tuberous plants have retreated underground storing their energy for the following season.
We have been growing ancient tubers for some years now and we want to encourage others to grow them too. They are a rewarding crop with diverse flavors, high yields and come in all sort of colours and shapes. Mashua, Oca, Yacon, Apios and Jerusalem artichoke are hardy plants and require no looking after at all when planted into a mulched garden.
We have been growing various tubers in large pots with good results, in particular with Oca. Each year we’re harvesting tubers throughout the winter directly from our gardens, so they don’t require storage space in a root cellar or shed. This makes them a great source of fresh food without having to harvest them all at once. Ancient edible tubers are rare and truly a hidden gem! They are not well known these days, but we’re hoping to change this by offering decent quantities of tubers at good value.

Hi Martin , Bianca and all . Good video with lots of information as usual , thank you 👍! We had a decent harvest of yacon , oca and Jerusalem artichokes but only got a few little white mashua tubers this autumn ( for next season) . Mashua it’s a really strong taste , a bit like nasturtium with cloves or liquorice ( raw ) . Yacon it’s my favourite too , I find the skin a bit too bitter so usually peel them . Another nice thing I’ve discovered about them that in stir fry they have the texture of a water chestnut . Best wishes , Ionuț

Wealthy capitalists' land owners should designate portions of their land close by to their nuclear bunkers for wild vegetables and wild tuber propagation to ensure food security in nuclear fallout.. yeah.. because wild vegetables and wild tubers are very, very resilient.

Thanks a lot, guys. Great video again. Can't wait until the yacons are available in the shop :-) Love to try those.

Thanks for watching and for your comment! We'll let you know when they're available, but there is only a very limited supply of Yacon starts this winter as we're still working on propagating them. Next winter they will be cheaper, then we can hopefully offer bigger quantities. Still though for now we'll have a few for those who want them.

Hi Martin and Bianca . You are very welcome 👍. I’ve tried to make it easier especially for the cuttings 😊. Been reading a lot these days about the groundnut ( hopniss ) and they are perennial and should give the best harvest in the 2th and 3th year 😁. Cheers 👍, Ionuț

@@ionutbarbu82 Indeed Apios are perennial, but you could harvest them after one year, it'll just be a smaller yield. I would like to set up many perennial vegetable growing experiments in the coming year to see what kind of results can be achieved.

I love your films. I bought some of your tubers last year and I'm really excited to see them in leaf now. I'm so looking forward to tasting them. It was so timely that I was discussing fig propagation with a friend and your email about that subject was the first thing I saw after!

Thanks for watching! We are delighted your tubers are growing. Our Ocas and Yacons are just being potted now and they bursting with life in the greenhouse. It's best to keep them frost free as they're sensitive. Most of the Mashuas and Jerusalem artichokes are growing outdoors and remained in the ground for the whole winter. What a coincidence about the figs :D

Can you keep them in the ground like a perennial in zone 5? I'm in Massachusetts. Lol. And to intrigued!

Mashuas and Sunchokes are fairly frost hardy and will definitely return all by themselves every year, just mulch them with woodchips. Oca's do better if you take them up some time in the winter and plant them in pots in a greenhouse in Spring planting them out as seedlings. Yacons will most likely get eaten by slugs when they're small, so planting out strong seedlings is better.

Hi Martin thanks for the video, I'm really looking forward to growing these tublurs. I ordered the water pump that you mentioned in another one of your videos but I wondering about the solar charger you talked about to charge the pump. I'd be grateful if you could recommend the one you use. Regards Bernadette

Glad to hear. The truth is i'm still deciding on the setup for the new greenhouse. I'm not sure exactly what spec components to implement yet, but we'll make a video about it. I'm thinking 50-100watt (poly) solar panel, a charge controller well able to handle the power and a 40amp deep cycle drycell battery. Just to give you an idea for now.

You have a (You) Tuber paradise ! 😂 Do you ship their seeds internationally ? I'm your new subscriber and a student from India. We don't hage any of these varieties of tubers anywhere in India. I would be willing to pay for it.
@GardensforLife
@GardensforLife 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I'm afraid we don't ship internationally because it takes up to 3 weeks and the tubers go rotten in the packet, especially if it's going to countries on the southern hemisphere where it's summer at the moment.

Yacon is a little bland, but Mashua is full of flavor. Quite peppery and spicy like concentrated nasturtiums
