It's that time of the year, we have made one more tuber harvest video. In the coming months we will make videos on the basics of gardening and various no dig techniques, but for now we wanted to use the winter as an opportunity to make a new Mashua harvest video. For those of you that haven't heard of this plant, it is a tuberous nasturtium very well suited to our cold temperate maritime climate. There is more info in the link for the useful plants series below.
It is a tuberous nasturtium very well suited to our cold temperate maritime climate in Ireland. In spring, when it's still cold and not much else is growing, mashua takes off to an early start and it almost takes over the place with it's climbing shoots. In fall it flowers and retracts back into fresh tuberous stored underground for the winter well protected from the frost. No artificial storage and replanting required, same as the potato and the oca when using woodchip mulch. In our gardens they have been coming back year after year more vigorous. For more info and pictures etc see link below.

Thanks, great to hear! Just had an idea from seeing your channel name again. :D A friend of ours at portaferry permaculture made wine from jerusalem artichokes before, maybe mashua or the other ancient tubers could be used for this too. I will look into it and try it.

Great video, new sub here 😁 I've got mashua to grow this year so it's great to see what a huge harvest you can get from them 🌺 I'm also growing oca, Jerusalem artichokes, Chinese artichokes, and yacon.

Thanks for your comment! Nearly everything we're growing in the no dig mulch gardens is growing like crazy and it's nearly no work to maintain. :D This years growth is going to be huge, it's only the third year at our house.

Interesting. Never heard of the Mashua. Good to know there is no inulin in them! Very heavy cropping by the looks of it!

Thanks for comment! So far Mashua has been reliable at cropping well, especially when mulched from the start. Oca is similar and does very well in mulch but it's more tasty.

Wow! I will have to go and do more research and see if this is something we could grow in the Adirondack Mountains of New York in the USA. We are zone 4a. We just tried a garden like this for the first time this year too (on Long Island where we live year round). I know you said they are like potatoes, but do you cook them the same way too?
@GardensforLife
@GardensforLife 5 жыл бұрын
Mashua tends to go mushy easily when cooked, i have never tried boiling or steaming them, but we have eaten them roasted, this way they're fine although not as starchy as potatoes. They will grow almost anywhere, in ireland they will flower but not go to seed, the growing season is too short for this to happen, however it's easily propagated by tubers. :D Defo worth a try!

I'm afraid mashua doesn't go to seed in our climate, we simply grow them from tubers. This way they will stay true to the variety. We will have them available for sale again from November / December.

Anyone who believes and calls on the name of Jesus is forgiven his sins, because He is God who took human form and offered Himself as a sacrifice for your sins. Watch for the imminent appearance of Satan on earth where he will impersonate Jesus. Jesus was eating at Simon's house (Simon was a leper whom Jesus had healed) a few days before His crucifixion when a woman arrived with a box of priceless ointment and anointed Him with the contents. The disciples thought the woman was crazy because she could have sold the ointment and given the money to the needy. She had anointed him for burial, Jesus said, and he commanded that what he had done be reported so that she would be remembered wherever the gospel was preached.
