If this was a horror it would do so much better. He clearly doesn’t see the clones or even his wife really as more than an object for him to mold and possess - he wanted to bring his wife back instead of respecting her death; he has no issues burning all of the clones even though they look like his wife, even killing some himself; groomed or assisting in grooming most of them; he isn’t affected by their feelings or their wants as people; hasn’t made a plan for what happens after even tho she can’t have a normal life as she’s *legally dead* - he just wants to possess her. If this ended with the clone killing Adam and going to the police to show them what happened it would make way more sense. The RA is no better

Agreed! And yes, that research assistant is behaving just as grossly as he is, it's just a gender reversal. I just wish movies would stop perpetuating the misinformation that you can get DNA from hair. You can get it from the follicle that is sometimes attached to the hair after you rip it out, but to find a hair in a brush with an intact follicle is extremely unlikely. Not that you can´t rip out the follicle with the brush. But it would die fairly quickly and the DNA would degrade. When hair is used in forensic investigations, you look at it under a microscope and compare it to hairs of suspects/victims, since there are distinct differences in the distribution of melanin. TL;DR: No DNA on hair that has been in a hair brush for days/weeks/months. Follicles dead, DNA trash. - Sincerely, a biochemist who totally never cloned her partner don´t send the police to my house again

Attempt number three is just so disturbing, she grows up in three months, probably having no outside contact and told exactly what to do and how to behave. This man has no idea how to raise a girl and doesn’t care to try and that scene where he pushes the earring is sooooo creepy with all this context. He doesn’t seem to care when she dies, or when any of them dies, because they’re just failed experiments to him and not living people. This feels like a horror movie, gives me the vibes that Prestige was going for.

If any of you are podcast enthusiasts and/or morbidly curious, you might also enjoy Pounded In The Butt By My Own Podcast, a Night Vale production(!) that has podcasters and assorted personalities do readings of some of his books. As a deconstruction of love, this movie is kind of fascinating. The absolute horror of the premise aside, it did a pretty decent job of showing that identity is not just genetics but built up by experiences/nurture. Clone Dawn could never love him like he wanted because all that time and those memories that brought them closer together wouldn't carry over. She's genetically Dawn, but one who just doesn't know or love him that way. We're not coded to be with any one person, a lot of relationships kind of just start due to proximity and chance. Now if they just filmed this like a horror movie and not a romantic comedy, you'd probably feel the tragedy of the premise a whole lot better.

This movie was astounding in how atrocious it was. So many issues, and almost all of them can be traced back to Adam. Awful character from the start and ended up so malicious and reprehensible. Watching him be stumped on why he's not attracted to his daughter wife, to having no issues burning the corpses of the clones, to straight up euthanizing them, and then him bounding and gagging the final clone when she turned him down, I screamed in fear many a time. And not that the movie could be saved by a better actor, but wow could Adam not act in the slightest. No emotion, and totally no chemistry with Dawn at all. Which, is even more upsetting after going to Wikipedia to find out, Adam and Dawn are married in real life and have been for over 15 years. I think the funniest moment might've been when the old man finished drinking the poison and Adam says "You want to know how I did it?" and the old man goes "I'm dying." That legit got me.

Also, the parents faces looked so creepy when they got the extra hair for the science dude ALSO, how is the RA going to school with that clone and nobody is like “how are you dating your student??” And then they’d be like “it’s ok cuz it’s a clone” and that would open another can of worms

15:00 Fun fact: Cloning is actually accomplished by taking previously existing cells from a host and growing more cells from the original cells. As such, cloned cells keep the original age of the piece from which it originated, making it older than what it "is." So if one were to clone a sheep, the lamb would look young but the age of its cells would be older than it appeared, resulting in what appears to be a shorter lifespan! This is why, historically, the one sheep that was successfully cloned lived a short life Also also this is what happens naturally when you cut off a limb of a starfish!

Okay! Just hearing the basic premise for the movie I got very reminded of a game called 'My Lovely Daughter', where a guy makes a bunch of humonculi daughters and kills them in order to try to bring his 'real' daughter back to life. It's a really good horror game. Trying to imagine that game being framed as lighthearted... God I can't. All this to say, I have no idea why they tried to make this movie concept something lighthearted?? Like how, this man is killing and raising clones of his wife to marry her again like.. this sounds straight up like it could be a spinoff to 'My Lovely Daughter'. Instead it reads like someone found the premise of the game and failed to notice how absolutely abusive and horrifying the entire thing is DESPITE the content warning. Just... God. I am incredibly bothered by this movie's existence.

What's weird is clearly these writers know that clones are basically like identical twins, they're not literally the same person, they just look the same. But... ignoring that is seen as quirky and romantic? The fact this man would just take /any/ person who simple looks like his wife and is into him is fucking weird. It's almost like he doesn't see her (his original wife) as a real person with a unique internal world and self that's gone now, which is... a lot, very scary. As long as her body is still around then it all good? EW EW EW

The thing about this movie is that the protag (and Kennie by extension) refer to all the clones as “Dawn” and conceptualize them as reincarnations of Dawn brought back to life, but they aren’t, really! They have no memories of Dawn’s life and have no idea who she is. Dawn is dead and her spirit is not being passed from clone to clone. A more accurate analogy would be if Adam kidnapped all of Dawn’s younger sisters at birth to raise them to be child brides. They have separate lives and memories and are separate people from the actual Dawn. And during their very short lives they are ALL groomed and abused by either their DAD or a complete stranger and then die very young, with no context or understanding of why they’re being treated this way. Like, it’s not only horrifying but deeply fuckin’ sad! And y’all thought this, like, incestuous cult premise was a proper basis for a rom-com
