Here's my theory, Kennie: Since this book/movie is from the man's POV, Drew is basically an unreliable narrator. Thus anything we see here is occurring because he says that's what is happening in the story. For all we know, Kate ended up with Billy and they got married and lived happily ever after while Drew ended up alone and heartbroken. However, as a rich, narcissist who's used to getting everything he wants, he'll never admit to what truly happened, thus this movie :-)

I don't mind romance in books that in real life would be horrific, because I'm projecting my fantasy onto this fictional character so no one is getting hurt. But when that book is made into a movie the main characters is their own person and their emotions becomes three dimensional. So when they say "no" and that isn't respected you are sitting there helpless, watching someone else being abused.
@preciousgugzikgomo7060

Which is why I don’t get why these books get adapted into movies because as readers we understand that these can never see the light of day.
@ButterflyScarlet
@ButterflyScarlet 2 жыл бұрын
@@preciousgugzikgomo7060 because these books tend to be popular. Adult readers are often fully aware that this is a fantasy and not indicative of real life wishes, but studios see the appeal and turn them into movies that will be showed to different audiences without recognising that maybe some stories don't need to be adapted. Sometimes the medium they are in is the whole point.

I come from the perspective that the medium is the message, and... That's very interesting.

Reminiscent of the Lolita problem where adapting it into a movie directly contradicts the message from the book because it involves a real life girl being put in a bad situation (even if it is pretend).
@BabyGirlTiny

I get the sentiment because seeing something can put it into perspective, but at the same time, but, you also have to keep that same perspective in mind that this is all fake and nobody is actually being abused and getting hurt.

This movie sounds like what Pick Up Artists think is gonna happen every time they treat a woman like crap. "naw see, negging is the bait. The candle-lit dinner is to throw her off balance. She thinks she knows you! Then you hit her with the curve ball! She'll fall INSTANTLY IN LOVE." Yes. For no reason. When she has a grocery list of reasons why you suck and she should run? Uh huh. In the 2nd book she gets pregnant and books appointment to a female doctor friend who gets mentioned by her surname which ofcourse drew thinks of it as her cheating with a guy behind his back and when he sees Kate with the husband of the doctor, he confirms that she's cheating. Then when Kate comes to appartment to tell about the pregnancy he has already hired a stripper, was a getting lap dance meanwhile getting super drunk and acted like a jerk. Ofcourse Kate didn't tell him about her pregnancy and goes to her home town to her mom's house.Kate also I think quits her job without any notice thinking his family will obviously side with drew. And after all the miscommunication again they end up together, admittedly both set of parents are pissed with their miscommunication regardless. Meanwhile when they're separated, Drew was glad he didn't technically cheat bcoz his dick didn't work since the stripper wasn't Kate. And Kate and Billy kissed each other while Billy was comforting her but she just realised she's strong enough to be a single mom. That's the shit show of 2nd book.

As a queer romance author, it's so frustrating that toxic and misogynistic romance is the most visible part of the genre, to the point that a lot of people think that that is all romance novels have to offer. There are so many wonderful books out there that explore consent, healthy communication, discovery of sexual and gender identity, and show that people outside the white/cis/het/skinny/able-bodied "ideal" can still be desired and feel desire themselves. It's such an empowering genre for me, and I wish more people could see the good books that exist instead of getting bogged down by the bad. If any of y'all are looking for romance recs, the authors Talia Hibbert, Alexis Hall, and Casey McQuiston are some of my favorites.

It was a cold morning, Kennie was feeling loungey and relaxed as she prepared her hello fresh meal kit, the soft lull of the 365 Days : This day movie post credits hummed across the room as she sighed over her lemon chicken dish. A low rumble of thunder rang in the distance, as the rains grew louder, the Tv flickered switching to passionflix. "That's weird." She thought ignoring her instincts to get the hell out of there. The thunder rang louder the storm was closer now, the screen glitched, switching between atrocious film covers in garish hues of reds, greys and blacks before thunder rang again it was loud, it was right over her house this time lightning flashed lighting up the room, the tv screen goes black, it's quiet. It's dark. The lights are out. The tv flickers on. Nothing else does. On it a man of generic nature with grey orbs stares back at her. "Who is he?" She wonders grabbing her phone "Felix." He says, "Passion Felix," She calls the police. They take away her TV. Tale as old as time.

He's in a suit taping on the tv glass "Who is he?" She wonders grabbing her phone "Felix." He says, reading her mind with his mind powers coz he's a CEO vampire "Passion Felix," She calls the police. They take away her TV. Tale as old as time.

A professor at my own alma mater teaches a course on “trash lit” where the course materials consist of New York Times Best Sellers, bodice rippers, other kinds of erotica, “dime store” mysteries/thrillers/romance novels, and, of course- *fanfiction*. Yes. This English professor has the students who take this course read fanfiction, as required reading. It’s in the syllabus. You have no idea how much the little nerdy teenager inside me loves that, and how much I love the fact that this class even exists. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

Theory (about the duality): we let things fly in text because our own minds are a safe space. The minute it goes into film and is represented by real people (i.e. not figments of imagination) its drawn into the context of the real world, and all the negative things that people who identify as female have to deal with. Then it gets icky and we wonder what's wrong with us.

You always say that stuff like that is only considered romantic cause it's in a movie, but people irl also romanticize creepy behavior. Last year a male co-worker found my home address from HR documents and sent me an expensive cheeses and wine basket. Everybody thought it was a cute gesture and that I should appreciate it and thank him! Wtf!? I'm a single woman living alone in a metropolis and should be happy a crazy older man has my address without me giving it to him? Anyway, people don't think about the other ways this could've played out, especially men.

Lol, I realized I read this series too from your video. In the 2nd book, she wants to secretly find out if she's pregnant and lies about where she's going which leds him to follow her to her friend whose an OBGYN. Drew sees her hug her friends husband in the parking lot to her impromptu appointment which 'confirms' to him that she is cheating. He goes get a stripper for a lap dance at their home which she walks in on, which upsets her and makes her move back home to her parents I think. Then the rest if the film is him trying to get her back after finding out that she wasn't cheating, that she's pregnant, and promising that he'll be less reactive lol.

I've been watching the Bad movie playlist and I noticed that these romance movies always always have the same trope: Woman exists and she isn't in love with the man or somehow in his ownership/control in general and this is somehow an issue to the man. And/or the man exists and the woman is just obsessed with him existing to the point she NEEDS him in/on her NOW or else. And we always have some kind of "ex love" thing where some other woman dumped him or broke his heart somehow to act like it adds sympathy. Twilight, After, My Teacher Obsession, Fifty Shades, Hot Gimmick, etc. all did it. Like at this point, I'm convinced some group out there has an unironic fetish for bad, toxic romances and they keep this genre of bad movies alive.

I think why these movies are uncomfortable is because now we have physical faces to put to these characters. It gets a little too real for some of us and what sounds thrilling and exhilarating in written form suddenly starts to waver with actors. There's a balance you have to have when the universe is connected to ours. That being said, i like the control romance readers have with their fiction. We can go in and know what tropes to expect.

@CARATMom
@CARATMom 2 жыл бұрын
As a person who reads Emma Chase books I can already tell this is going to be a doozy-because these “movies” focus so much on the seggs that they forget that these books are actually FUNNY. They suck all the fun and irony out of the stories in their pursuit to make it “sexy” but from what men think women think is sexy. Which mean lame. (Throws kindle) To me (I’ve only read the books) Drew character was too absurd to take seriously. I typically do not enjoy movie versions of romance novels. It doesn’t work because nuance is lost-it hard to film thoughts and breaking the fourth wall is off putting. Often the characters are working through their feelings and they can’t when a device of the romance novel is that characters don’t know they are in love until the end. And unless you are good at filming feelings- it doesn’t translate to the screen.

I agree so much. I loved the whole series bc emma chase made me laugh so much, the characters were funny, drew was funny in a ryan reynolds type of way, it felt like I'm being so blunt, shameless and ridiculous you just have to laugh. I don't know anything about emma but while reading I was like yeah, this is not meant to take seriously, this is for you to laugh and have a lighthearted time. and it was refreshing bc for the first time, the guy was an a**hole and he knew that he was and he wasn't pretending or giving the whole oh my dad killed my mom type of angst to justify his actions, and, again, he was funny.
@CARATMom
@CARATMom 2 жыл бұрын
@@malena6539 exactly! Hollywood have Drew characters all the time. But it take a good actor to make him likable. And these cheesy romance movies don’t exactly get exceptional actors to play the roles. So they come off as one dimensional.
