The Secret Life of Roses:
Music by Phil Cunningham,
Lyrics by Rosanne Cash.
Lyrics:
If you travel far or tarry long - away from love and refuge,
If you've lost your way from right to wrong -- still my heart is true
If the seven seas rise up between and you sail to distant wonders
I will wait upon some foreign shore and live on dreams of love
Of all the things I never said and all the hope inside me
I am still the keeper of the flame that will not be denied
There is beauty in the silent bird there is light where none can see it
There is truth when no one says a word there is love for you and me
And the secret life of roses that bloomed out of the sun
Is like the love that I keep for you -- it never will be done
And the stars we wish on up in the sky - they fade into the night
But my love will grow where no one knows
Like a rose's secret life
And the stars we wish on up in the sky they fade into the night
But my love will grow where no one knows
Like a rose's secret life
Final version of a "slow aire" written by Phil. From Phil's Scotland's Music TV programme and illustrates how Scottish music has been adopted and "adapted" by other countries.
Andrea Zonn - vocals & fiddle
Phil Cunningham - piano
Lloyd Green - steel guitar
Jimmy Capps - guitar
Mark Fain - bass
Bob Mater - drums
Recorded in RCA Studio B

Between Phil's talent at writing beautiful airs and Roseanne Cash's beautiful lyrics, this is an incredible song. There is a clip where Phil asks her how she came up with the lyrics. She had the idea of the secret life of roses in her head before, but the longing in the music brought the rest of the lyrics to mind for her. Those two should collaborate on some more.

A grower and a spine-shiverer. Absolutely breathtaking. Andrea's beautiful voice, the Nashville talents there. It was all magical to me. Especially Lloyd Green and his steel. The man has the touch of pure gold.

Lloyd Green complimented every artist he's ever backed up, in a way like only he could. It's no wonder he is one of the most recorded steel guitarists in history, if not THE most recorded!

beautiful version of this song. As a Scot raised mainly on Rock music so much of Scotland's music is only now becoming known to me.

Great Video and great music. Classic scottish sounds and with the Lloyd green thrown in for good measure. Perfect use of the steel, but what else would you expect from LG?!

The song was written by Phil and Roseanne Cash for a BBC Scotland production where it was performed in different styles of American `Country` to show how the two nations are linked through music. This one is my favourite version.

As far as I know not released by anyone yet. I would think Andrea will have it on her next albulm. You would also expect Roseanne Cash to record it too - here's praying she makes a full recovery from her recent operation. I have added lyrics - just click "more" top right.

It took me hours to find this after hearing the tin whistle version(no vocals) on a Scottish wildlife documentary with no reference to the songs name. I've written other lyrics for it and will perform it.
