On the last night of Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham's 12th annual tour os Scotland, they played a storming concert at Eden Court Theatre in Inverness, Highland capital of Scotland. This is that concert. The repertorie is timeless, their music speaks to all ages.

Absolutely one of the best tunes I've ever heard , I personally think the fiddle and accordion bring out the goose bumps on your body than the bagpipies

What a performance from them both. Absolutely top notch. The feeling they produce from their instruments is overwhelmingly stunning.

That was AWESOME! Such beautiful and SENSITIVE playing! Fiddle was gorgeous, and the accordion was the most beautiful accordion playing I've ever heard! I don't usually enjoy the accordion sound, but this won me over!

I love this tune. There's a great story about how it came to be written. They were at a charity dinner and realised that they didn't have anything for the "celebrity" auction at the end. Phil wrote the tune on a napkin and it was auctioned with the successful bidder getting the right to name the tune - after his wife, Sarah. Don't know how true it is but it just seems in keeping with the emotion of the piece.

My first experience to hear this was on, of all places, the American program, "A Prairie Home Companion" with Garrison Keillor, on one of their annual "Joke Show" tributes. It sure changed the mood of the moment - and it was a very good change.

It seems to me that Aly Bain's playing of this astonishing melody is so much sweeter and gentler than any other I've found. Why is that?

I too would love to find a CD/MP3 recording of this arrangement with just the two of them. If you want to hear the version they did on Prairie Home Companion in 2000, go to their website and search the archives for the April 1, 2000 program. The recording quality (sadly) is not as good, but I actually think the arrangement on that program is even better than this one. Phil interposed a few different chords here and there which were incredibly rich. Wish I had that version on CD....

This is one of the best 'home fire' songs ever (IMHO). It sounds like it's about a journey and sadness, but it's not (a LOT of Celtic music invokes the idea of a journey). For me, it directs my attention to the "why" and "for whom" I do some action, of the moment or of life. I must get back to it. May the water at your home fire always be sweet.

I can only find this with piano on iTunes. Did they ever record it in this format, which, to me, is the far more evocative version.

Beautiful composition and playing by Phil but when Aly comes in on the fiddle, it smacks you right in the middle of the chest. (It does me anyway)

You are so right! That is exactly what I always say to people about this piece. The intro is beautiful but the first notes of the violin just grab at your heart, like OMG! So beautiful.
