@Angel Nunn I could’nt care less about The Phantom of the Opera, no actor caught my attention, I fell a sleep during the movie - but then I saw Ramin Karimloo play the phantom on my telly. Suddenly I payed intense attention. Outstanding Singer, brilliant actor. Noone above or even beside Ramin Karimloo in my opinion!

The insane thing is, at the time Michael Crawford was known to be a physical comedy actor, so many people went into Phantom expecting it to be a goofy show. Apparently during intermission at previews, everyone was going to the payphones and going ''you're....not gonna believe this..."

In an interview with Lloyd Webber I learned the following. Crawford wanted to extend his repertoire to get more work and decided to take singing lessons. Lloyd Webber was visiting someone who shared premises with the singing coach and heard the voice and asked, "Who is that?" When the reply came, "It is Michael Crawford having a singing lesson" Lloyd Webber said, "I have found my Phantom."

@@konradyearwood5845Ever heard of a little show called Hello Dolly in 1969? Your story is only partially accurate. Yes, Mr Crawford was taking voice lessons from Sarah Brightman’s (Webber’s wife at the time) coach, but certainly not because he’d never sung before. He’d already had a long career of singing professionally. Close, very close, but no cigar 😉

I was at a convention in Los Angeles in 1989 with my English mother accompanying me. We were passing the theater-and I think it was on Wilshire Boulevard-to see that the Phantom of the opera was playing there with the original cast. I wanted to go so badly, but my mother, in her 70’s was not up to it and I would never have left her alone, so I missed that opportunity. But seeing this was a treasure. I’m in my late 70’s now, so seeing this was a gift. Thank you.

Agreed. It’s amazing how many of the original performers of these great shows - embodied their characters, that is to say - through both movement as much as voice. For me, many of today’s principles have become what I call ‘vibrato-belters’, with less character/nuances. As an example I’m looking at Lea Salonga compared with Frances Rufelle’s original Éponine (Lea is of course brilliant) but a good example.

As it happens, the reason that the Phantom has a half mask is because Michael Crawford found himself unable to properly convey the Phantom's emotions with a full mask as seen in the official branding of the musical. Those few seconds are clearly testament to this, as with a full mask the Phantom would have simply looked on stone faced.

I remember once I've been in NYC with my parents in 1997. I was crazy about seeing this show but the tickets were so expensive for us we couldn't afford it. The box office attendant said finally wait there are three tickets in the row 50 of the orchestra we said yes. The night of the show we enter the theatre gave the tickets to the person that help us and we headed to the back she called us. No it's this way and we followed. It happened that the seats were in the first row in the middle. We saw each other and we couldn't believed it. When the orchestra starts with this amazing pipe organ that filled us with the illusion it made us vibrate our bodies. My mother and I saw each other and we were crying about the emotion. Then in the beginning an enormous chandelier falls right on top of our heads I could feel the breeze and falls on stage. The director of the orchestra and the singer were fabulous I fell in love with the music of Weber. I'm eternally thankful to that man that with just that enormous gesture made us so incredibly happy.

Hard to find this version of the lyrics so here it is: Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation Darkness wakes and stirs imagination Silently the senses abandoned their defenses Helpless to resist the notes I write For I compose the music of the night Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender Hearing is believing Music is deceiving Hard as lightning, soft as candlelight Dare you trust the music of the night? Close your eyes for your eyes will only tell the truth And the truth isn’t what you want to see In the dark it is easy to pretend That the truth is what it ought to be Softly, deftly, music shall caress you Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you Open up your mind Let your fantasies unwind In this darkness which you know you cannot fight The darkness of the music of the night Close your eyes Start a journey through a strange new world Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before Close your eyes and let music set you free Only then can you belong to me Floating, falling, sweet intoxication Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation Let the dream begin, let your darkest side give in To the power of the music that I write The power of the music of the night You alone can make this song take flight Help me make the music of the night

Yes. I agree. Everything is very much more declaimed nowadays. There's no legato, no sotto Voce, no rubato, I'm not saying the singing is bad... It's all well sung these days, but there's no verissmo, no depth to the characterisation of the voice. Tbf Ramin does a bit, but he has the advantage of having sung the sequel too, so gets a layer deeper than most... Colm Wilkinson also had some very tender moments, but Michael is still the gold standard 😉

Michael’s performance is truly mesmerising. He literally has me in a trance every time I watch him. He’s a truly remarkable actor. His mannerisms are so on point with the character he is portraying. There are many talented people but to have it all come together as it did so very beautifully. Your emotions soar. A master piece of work! Who would have thought that Michael Crawford could have given such a Magnificent piece. One very talented man. I do hope his life has been blessed as he has blessed us.

These lyrics that you hear originated from the Richard Stilgoe lyric performed at Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sydmonton Festival in 1985. There should still be a video on KZfaq of Colm Wilkinson performing these lyrics. It's different again, but many of those lines survived into this version. Stilgoe was the original sole lyricist, but then he and Andrew felt they needed another lyricist as it wasn't working out the way they'd hoped. Enter Charles Hart. It's his lyrics on the original cast album and the productions. The video here still has his lyrics, but they use more of Stilgoe's original lines.

The fact Crawford could oscillate between whispered singing and full forte dynamic is astounding. His head-voice when “breathy singing” and remaining in tune is also very remarkable. Crawford fully embodied the sympathetic dungeon-dwelling creature aesthetic beautifully.

I am from a very rural place, and I did not know that this musical existed until I heard the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum Corp cover this music in 1988. I have a diverse musical education, including 8 years with the clarinet, and this is one of my all time favorites. Crawford will most likely never be surpassed in his performance of this song.
