haha, i hear you - back in the 70s, there was a guy on tv telling us stories and adventures about climbing around in the mountains - he spoke in a dialect, so we children didn´t understand but a few words here and there, but he was so excited and his stories felt so thrilling, we watched it all through without really understanding, haha... :-) well, i understand a bit about synths, but not enough to really follow here and my wallet is far too small for this gear, but i still i love andrew´s channel, so we´re in the same boat... love and greetings from germany

Was it the white square with label "VACTROL" surrounding the component that gave it away? ;)
@ericMT
@ericMT 4 ай бұрын
That is just an indicator LED he circled. The other thing is a filtering capacitor next to a current limiting resistor. There is another LED and a photo resistor inside the black case that is what is changing resistance as the LED gets brighter. You want to isolate the LEF from any ambient light that could affect the photo resistor to help keep it more consistent. Vactrols are illegal to sell in the EU due to some environmental concerns with one tiny piece of material in the photoresistor. This is one reason you are seeing modules come out with vactrol emulation like the DXG.

For anyone curious, this rig costs around $4.5k USD including PSU and some patch cables. That's substantial, obviously, but it's really not as much as I was expecting. It's serious money for sure but it's like "fancy car"-level money, not like crazy luxury supercar money. I also really like that the parts can be purchased individually. One could theoretically build up to this rig over time. And packed into this briefcase case, it's a really lovely and versatile setup. Thanks for the breakdown! Nice balance of depth and breadth.

Good to highlight the distributed mixing thing. I've owned a B&G system for about 4 years and added more mixers and also Brains. Echophon and Erbeverb are still blowing my mind. Patch tip for endless droney background soundscapes to layer tastefully under other stuff: Erbeverb CV out => Absorb, then you can turn the Decay all the way up (down?) without things ever getting out of control. The urge to add another Erbeverb is very real.

Is there some sort of global speed CV in for tempi? Hook up an LFO and now the timing of the timing of the timing of the speed changes changes changes.
@hlprmnky
@hlprmnky 3 жыл бұрын
You can set Tempi up that way, with the CV input and knob that were used to move through saved states in this video controlling the global tempo instead. You could also use any source of varying-period gates (Wogglebug burst or clock out, the end-of-rise/end-of-cycle gates on Maths channels 1 and 4, there’s a gate emitted from Morphagene every time a sample completes, etc.) to clock Tempi and still have the CV/knob available to change states if you wanted.

Man I'm late to the space mission content and generally puzzled by it but it's funny how appropriate the space mission is as a metaphor for the modular synths. As in, both modular synths and outer space travel are too expensive for a normal human; both are very solitary and technological, and sterile in a way. You don't get to touch outer space because it's nothing, and you don't get to touch the vibrating sound in the synth because it's electrical.

What? Of course he’s not in space, there’s gravity, my friend. The whole thing is a fun concept. It could be building to something bigger? But yeah he’s definitely not in space right now. Look at how much room he has! Spacecrafts are built with exactly the necessary amount of room, no extra.
