Great reaction can't wait to see more! I was oddly overjoyed/giddy for you over spotting a snare very much like yours,. I guess that would be like me seeing Rickey Henderson steal his record setting base with the same ball spikes I play in🤫. He is unreal esp considering all I could concentrate on was that funky Bass line and smooth sax!

Consider me an inspired 52 year old drummer who has been playing for 42 years. Quitting is just so weak and almost impossible to respect. Greats should never cause anyone to quit. Quitting is very character revealing.
@simtaur714
@simtaur714 3 жыл бұрын
@@respectfullydisagree711 I respectfully disagree.... ;) Sometimes people don't really know if something is for them until they give it a shot, it shouldn't be considered a weakness for someone to stop pursuing something they are no longer truly enjoying. Also, I suspect the original comment was more of a light-hearted joke than something to be taken too seriously. That said, I do agree with you about the part that "greats should never cause anyone to quit" because comparison is the thief of joy, as they say, and everyone potentially has something unique to offer.

No, he is a Gift of Nature. Sadly. all too many have this type of ability, but never find their niche, until it's too late, if ever. And I have met some so gifted, it was never too late. My grandmother played piano her whole life. Her first job was playing piano at a Silent Theater. It was a competitive interview. She went first. Every other applicant heard her, sighed, got up, and walked out. Except for one lady. Who had walked in, saw her, and said, "Oh. Good luck, Sally." and walked back out. But, that isn't the point of this story. After my grandfather passed, grandma started teaching again. One day, a lady of my grandma's age came to her, and said, "Teach me." So, grandma did. In 3 months, this woman was playing Chopin scores that she was seeing for the first time.

I first heard Larnell several years ago when he was a last-minute sub for a CD release party in Toronto. I’m not even sure if it was kit. But the gig was in a funky art gallery. Our seats were literally six feet from the kit (shallow “stage” on the floor that went from the kit on the right to double bass, baby grand piano and singer). I’d always liked the drums to some extent, having played in high school. Jazz was okay to me, depending on the artist and song. But that evening made my mind explode. Larnell had never even rehearsed with the band. There were hushed conversations little longer than a football huddle and off they went. I’d never seen or heard anything so plugged in, so intuitive, so dynamic or so intimately wired into the soul of a song in my life. And I’ve been a massive fan ever since. Spoken to him very briefly a couple of times and he is SO humble that it almost hurts. And he’s always learning and sharing. To me, that’s the whole secret to life; stay humble, learn and share the good stuff.

@@nadogrl Yeah he said "take 2" which I wasn't sure if he meant that was technically his second listen or second performance because he did a "pass." The reactions and his commentary make it seem like he only did one full performance

Absolutely incredible! You can tell the difference between a musician hearing the music and a drummer playing the song. A HUGE difference. I would bring in a friend (bassist), Ron Jenkins playing the bass part on a song and then having me (primary inst. guitar) play bass on the same tune. Ron would make it sound like he had played the song all his life when the first he heard it was his first time through to hear it. I could’ve practiced it for a week and still have user errors. Ron is not only the best bassist I’ve ever played with but he’s a great guy to just hang out with. Each night we played was like sitting front row w/Victor Wooten. I never wanted the night to end! 🎵🎶❤️😷🤘

One of my favorite "local" bands, The Midnight Devils, was booked for the Rocklahoma music festival one year. Their drummer was so strung out on drugs that they had to fire him. They met another drummer who learned their entire playlist (all original stuff) in one day and has been with the band ever since.

11:20 every musician has felt that feel you're feeling here. Where you come across someone who is an absolute master of their craft and you are just speechless at what they can do, even when you yourself are highly-skilled. Half of you wants to just hang it up, when you realize how much there is to learn (and how much work it would take to get there), and the other half is energized and inspired by seeing what magic is possible on your instrument. Larnell Lewis is such an amazing musician, truly inspiring.

OK seriously??? Your title way undersold this. I was expecting to hear something like a rock or metal song with fairly straightforward stuff going on and then just cover it. I was not expecting a jazz piece with tons of nuance and him actually creating a drum part. I'm a lifelong violinist who is "pretty good" at drums on Rock Band (the game), so I at least can appreciate the insane level of talent here.
