I'm finishing the course this week. Here's my review. I have been watching video tutorials and reading forums for 5-6 years prior to enrolling in the course. And I have found very useful information. But... There is so much information out there on the internet, and there are so many ways to tackle a problem in the audio world, you soon get totally lost in endless hours of tutorials and how-to's. And you always feel that you don't know something. That you are missing something. And you don't know what you are missing. Exactly that problem Andrew's course started to resolve for me. It gives you a framework in which you can place all the aspects of mixing (or bettering the sound if you are a producer). It lays down a path - an algorithm of some very essential milestones you have to pass in every mix. And Andrew explains why it's better to do it that way. This algorithm is absolutely essential if you are new to mixing (or even if you have some experience which you've acquired by yourself). The whole mixing concept is divided into several main topic categories, and each category is taught for multiple hours. Very extensively. The reverb topic alone was something like 20 or more hours! I thought I knew almost everything about the Panorama topic. I was totally wrong. It turned out there were so many things I didn't know about that very important aspect of mixing. He gives you a system of sound and instrument placement even for the panorama. And the system is very good. There is a system for EQ-ing. That was one of the very best things in the course (one of many). When you finish a topic, you have a feeling that you understand it in a completely different manner - you have confidence that you know the topic reasonably well. You have the feeling you don't make shots in the dark anymore. Of Course there are many many things you don't know, but somehow you have the base of knowledge which you can start to upgrade with practice. There is one very important aspect of mixing which you cannot learn by yourself and it is to acquire aesthetic understanding for the sound. So when you hear a kick drum for example, to understand what's wrong with it - does it lack a punch, does it sound too boomy, or it has too much sub. That kind of thing. You start to learn that aspect. You have to make many, many more mixes to become better in this faculty but you already have the base. You start to know what's wrong with something when you hear it. You don't become an expert, but you start to understand it. Prior to that, if I heard a kick which I didn't like, I didn't know what exactly was wrong with it. Is it just too low in the mix? Or something else. If there were some annoying frequencies, which are they exactly? You do homework checking sessions in which you mix songs, Andrew reviews them in the class and points out what kind of mistakes you've made. You learn many, many things that way. After finishing the course, it's like you have a tree of knowledge and when you learn something new, you just put it on a particular branch, enriching your understanding of that aspect. The tree is there, standing firmly, not changing, you just put more things on the branches, you continue the growth of the branches. I highly recommend the course...

Thanks! But again I didn't say it's a bad option. Among AI in this price range it's a decent device. It's only me that the comp is useless, preamp has this specific tone which I explained in the video, quality of DACs are not the best but no best DACs for this price anyway. I'd recommend to try Volt out by yourself.

It sounds great for audio output in live performance, which is why i bought it. It has smoother highs output than Audient stuff, which i used to use because it’s small and easy to pack/carry for live performances. I also prefer the audio output of the Volt to the output of the Focusrite. It has a more natural less clinical sound than Apogee’s portable interface as well (used to use Apogee). For mobile applications where high quality audio output and small size is important, the Volt is a solid choice for the money.

Hello Andrew, thank you so much for this video. I purchased an Warm audio WA-47 mic and connected directly to my old rme Multiface II witch have no mic preamp. The signal is very very low, I can record vocals and monitor only with headphone amplifier then processing the vocals after but I don’t know is that’s ok. I was thinking to buy An Volt 1 only for mic preamp purpose, not interested in “vintage” emulation but not anymore. My question for you is: Should I buy a mic preamp or is ok to record without one? And if it’s a must to obtain better quality, what mic preamp do you recommend under 300 E for quality only? Thank you in advance!

In the commercials for these types of audio interfaces, the manufacturer says they are designed for "songwriteing", i.e. creating demos, not professional recordings (and I totally agree) I had a bad experience with the Volt 1, connected to an Audio Technica 4050SM the sound is too choked, the camera air no longer enters the microphone capsule... (too dense sound which made it hard to hear the details of the instrumentals) The stereo image is very narrow, I didn't like what I heard at all (connected to the HS7) A week after I bought it I sold it to a friend who needed it more.

Hi Ozan. The thing is I release a set of videos to get new students for my next 9-month course every 9 months. I see what topic is reasonable for this purpose or not. This subject would be not effective for this task for now. Also, it takes crazy effort and time to make one video. It's too difficult to even find time to make a new video in my schedule. So I have to hold back most videos and ideas for the future. And of course, 90% of cool and important topics i have to keep just for the course. I never release them as videos. So for now I keep that one just for the course.

For this price range I don't find anything really good. Also understand that questions like these can't have a correct answer in the first place. If somebody answers this question instantly and with a confidence run away from that person. There are too many factors like your acoustic treatment, if you use -25dbFS -18dbFS ot -10 dbFS or -3dbFS levels during recording (each preamp handles these levels very differently), how you will be processing all these etc. Example if you record hot some preamps gives nice saturation but others can give you dirt. So if you record clearer with low level it could be one preamp to be better. If you prefer saturation it could be the other preamp. If you tend to mix in one way it may expose imperfections of some preamps/converters of those interfaces. Example: you tend to boost uppen mid or cutting low mid. In this case if your preamp has ugly upper mid frequencies, they will be exposed. If you don't EQ like this this nuance will not be exposed. Some preamps tend to be smoother but less detailed. You will apply a bit too much Reverb and everything will be muffled and unclear. If you don't apply Reverb at all the same preamp/interface can be your perfect choice. I mentioned like 5% of all nuances only.

Personally I've found the ioStation24c the best bang for the buck. Outstanding converters, preamps, and a mini-DAW controller with motorized fader to boot. Your mileage may vary but if you're shopping for an interface put it on your list to consider. It's the first one I grab for the lappy on the go if it's in my site (I have wayyy too many interfaces but he who dies with the most toys wins!)

In myy experience of 6years into sound tech, I've always found that at that price range, if we are talking about preamp only, Audient always wins the game. With ID series and ASP line. Till it hits the Apollo X unison ranges. Then Apollo shows its superiority.
@AndrewZeleno1
@AndrewZeleno1 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Apollo preamps are not perfect too IMO. In comparison to my real Neves, SSLs, 610 etc but they are ok.

I have the Apollo and it causes troubles when your Mac switches to sleep mode. It makes your Mac crash! What causes (I think)it is that it's in fact an old Arrow (so nothing really special) and has no power switch. Tried everything but no luck on the Mac M1. So therefore I'm about to get me a Volt 467...
@AndrewZeleno1
@AndrewZeleno1 Жыл бұрын
Volt is a low grade interface. It has pretty ugly preamp tone, monitoring (converter quality) is pretty low, analog compressor is meh (as I showed in the video the company doesn't even know the specs of 1176).

Andrew, where one may listen to the ready songs that you have mixed?
@AndrewZeleno1
@AndrewZeleno1 2 жыл бұрын
I will give you three examples but please read the info under them about my job and my pro audio background which are not to mix songs. My job is a teacher. Examples first: The best song of the year (Grammy) VS my mix: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZpaoqJV6psi-pIE.html Ice Cube song I produced and mixed: soundcloud.com/andrew-zeleno/ice-cube-we-be-clubbin-remix-3 famous video game title theme I produced and mixed: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jcBphMuBl5zGeps.html But make sure you understand I was a senior audio engineer/producer for the biggest broadcasting company in Ukraine for 10 years. I'm not supposed to be a mixer for songs but in broadcasting. Now my occupation is a full time audio engineering teacher (full time since 2016). I'm not supposed to have my own work as songs as my job was broadcasting and later teaching. But you can check these song examples from above. As you request to show my own work and my work is teaching here's an example of how I teach: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/osyDYJRox8u3oYE.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gd9ldch1mq3Jn4k.html But still the best stuff I keep for the course. As I mentioned in the beginning of this video my videos are just light entertaining addition to my course. I provide a free trial class where you can see how I teach. So it would the best example of my work.

The UAD 467p volt is the best audio interface I have ever heard this that price point...I switched from a motu M4 (which is not bad) and I immediately heard a lot more separation between the instruments..., Gonna buy two more just to have in case one breaks....
@AndrewZeleno1
@AndrewZeleno1 Жыл бұрын
Don't waste your money. This interface is far from the best one. And for the same price you would take the half of my course which give 100000. Not 1000000000000 times more effect than some audio interface. Also don't forget just because you have more separation between instruments doesn't mean your mix is good and has this separation. Your listener will not hear this separation.
