On the old Japanese motorcycles the current for the ignition system (coils) runs through both the main ignition switch (key) & also the kill switch - not ideal & will, over time, cause damage to the internal contacts to to arcing etc. So, as part of the ignition system upgrade on this old Honda CB750 we are going to make a number upgrades, & the fitting of an ignition system relay is just one of them....
The video shows a step by step process of installing a relay into the wiring system of the motorcycle together with a detailed explanation of how to wire up the 4 pin relay & the fitting of each of the wires onto the motorcycle.
In the next video we will be fitting the new Dyna Ignition coils!!

Thanks, yes, I took another look after & to be honest the metal on the female spade connectors is a little too thin & not maintaining the clamping force - I'll have to replace them unfortunately.... Well spotted! Cheers Andy

Good video. Exposing the connection in the loom where you had to attach a different colored wire was the professional thing to do. It is so frustrating troubleshooting for the next guy if the change isn't easy to spot. Cheers..

Nice work on the connectors. I don't haveva lot of confidence when I do them. I tend to crush them.

I bought a Milwaukee m12 ratchet and it cut my maintenance time by an order of magnitude. I dont trust crimps because of oxidization and corrosion. Even the bad solder joints still intact.

Hi Andy, I just googled the Bosch RE55: It’s an external solid-state electronic voltage regulator for alternators.

Well that's rather odd since the bike has a regulator rectifier fitted?? I need to investigate further. Thanks for the info :-) Cheers Andy

Hey Andy. Put the relay in my gl1000 primary circuit. I ran the kill switch wire(18 gauge) back to the relay and to ground as u showed. Then ran a 14gauge wire from battery to relay through relay to the coils with the same size wire (14 gauge). At hard throttle the motorcycle losses all power and turn back on as the rpm drop. Any ideas why?
@AndyMechanic
@AndyMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm....There is a voltage induced into the primary coil when the field collapses. This can be up to 200 volts - it may be messing with your relay. Just to test, bypass the relay (connect the circuit feeding the ignition coils directly, taking the relay out of the circuit). Go for a test ride & see if problem goes away... Let me know ta Andy

Relays secondary circuit (key on power/ground) might need a diode across positive and negative to prevent electrical interference feedback

wonder why someone drilled three holes in the frame above the starter solenoid ?
@AndyMechanic
@AndyMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, yes, Definitely doesn't look standard & something that could cause the bike to fail the NZ Certification so I'll have to weld them up, flat the welds off & paint over. I won't be putting that to camera though! Lol

@@AndyMechanic sounds good. Yes I am really enjoying these videos because I am bringing a 1978 Honda CB750K back to life now. It had been sitting in the previous owners garage for over 20 years. The engine was seized from sitting so long. I got it unseized and have been bringing it back to life with help from your videos. I will be doing the electric ignition and the starter relay that you have done. You are meticulous with your work like me. It's nice to see there are still guys out there that truly care about their work. 🤟😁👍

Hi Steve, sorry, it's difficult to pitch the video length, some viewers prefer the longer, more detailed videos whilst others prefer the shorter, straight to the point type. Personally I prefer the shorter ones as they are easier to produce but sometimes the video needs the detail in order for the viewer to follow/understand the full process. Definitely shorter videos are on their way....promise! Cheers for the feedback. Andy
