How to diagnose and repair an old motorcycle PT2 with a Honda CB750. I take you through the full diagnosis process in part 1 so now we get started on the repairs by removing the bad ignition components as well as the carbs for rebuild.
I use my ultrasonic cleaner and soda blaster to get the carbs back to new before reassembly and take care of other odds and ends throughout the bike as I go. Once running I sync the carbs, bleed the front brakes, and go for a quick spin only to find that there is another ignition issue yet to diag. Through more testing it is found that I had a major voltage drop through the kill switch which had very dirty contacts upon disassembly. A bit of cleaning and we are all set!

- I use a 30l unit like this one. Buy the biggest you can as it will quickly pay for itself. You will use it far more than you think! (amazon affiliate link where I get a small commission if you purchase)

- I run mine normally around 50c for non painted parts and 35-40c for painted stuff
- I have been using mean green cleaner found at many stores as it doesn't darken aluminum or oxidize. For my 30l tank I use a half gallon at a time along with a few lines of Dawn dish soap.

In 1971 I had some money for a motorcycle. Went to a dealership and found bikes in my 1300 dollar price range. There was a 500 Triumph scrambler and a Honda 750 on the showroom floor. In a fit of utter stupidity, I road off on the Triumph.

When these first came out I went to the Honda dealer to pick up a bike of my own and there was a brand new K1 sitting waiting for a mate of mine to pick it up. The dealer had just put ArmourAll on the seat. The guy turned up with a mate and they both jumped, took off like a mate thing, and the mate slid off the back seat and took out both of the rear indicators before they had even left the dealership. It sounded awesome and was so fast!

Oh the memories. The sounds of that bike bring back many good memories. I had a 1977 Honda 750K twenty years ago. My bike had a Kerker 4 into 1 header and a larger jet kit. My bike really hauled. I never should have sold it…oh well.

I had a Kerker 4 into 1 on my '78 KZ1000 too. Just a great sound! It was really satisfying until I had to do my first oil change and that header blocked the drain plug. I believe Kerker implemented a 'swoop' in later years to get around the plug.

My Dad bought a new candy garnet brown CB 750 K1 in June of '71. I was 13 and this bike was like a dream. The looks, sound and power had me mesmerized. I would stay in the garage for hours cleaning it. Right next door, the neighbor had a BSA 650 Lightning. The guy down the street had a '69 Rocket Three. They'd all take off on a Sunday morning and the sound from all 3 could be heard a mile away. For me , it was a wonderful time. Thanks for refreshing my memory!

Just shared some of my long term runner experiences on part one but forgot to mention the tendency of the original oil filter bolt to get its head chewed up. My dear old now departed dad welded a nice big steel nut on my original and an aftermarket version became an essential buy in those far off crazy 70s. 6000 miles plus on my CB550 saw the indicator switch contacts wear out too. Oh’ by the way, the first item to get ditched was the indicator beeper.
@joeswinsick8977
@joeswinsick8977 2 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking about how irritating that beeper might get. On the other hand, can't even put a number on the amount of bikers I've seen running a blinker for miles and miles after a turn. Luckily my KTM has a self-cancel feature or I'd be in that boat too. Perhaps we should bring those beepers back?! Very forward thinking of Honda from a safety perspective!

Hey BJ. Those carbs don't look that bad, relatively speaking 😁. Three years ago I had to restore a set of Mikuni BS 32 CV's from a barn find Suzuki 750 that had sat with ethanol gas in the bowls for twenty years. There were just thick blobs of semi-solid green goo left in the bowls and the brass jets had all eroded away so even the screw slots were almost completely gone. No saving those ones. Thank the M/C gods for suppliers like Jets R Us for supplying the right replacement parts for old carbs!

That sure brings back memories, I had that same bike when I was 17. Of course back in the 70's making chopper/bobbers out of them was all the rage. I had mine painted a black pearl (no emblems), I put on pull back handle bars, four into four drag pipes, hog wheel, 8" over fork tubes, bobbed the front fender, painted the cylinder fins wrinkle black, ect, ect. Haven't thought about that thing in years. Thank you!

The 750s were actually a very popular platform for choppers. Ive revived a 70s Jammer framed CB750 chopper and that was such a cool bike. I see these come up for sale about once a month with extended forks and similar mods that have just been sitting in sheds for 40 years

I would most certainly have changed the 50 years old brake hoses. Usually you say 5-6 years before replace, so 50 years are long due. Besides that i can only congratulate you with your fine Honda. My first motorcycle back in ‘79 was a ‘72 Honda 750 too, only that mine had a rebore to 928 cc. I later had a F1 and a K7. I still ride motorcycles. Have a DL 1000 Suzuki but are thinking about getting me a Honda 750 before i get old.
@BrickHouseBuilds
@BrickHouseBuilds 2 жыл бұрын
I agree on the hoses but I talked with the owner and its on the list of future potential work to be done to the bike. Im actually very much wanting to try a Vstrom but since I have a KLR650 it doesn't make sense to add a DL to the stable. We will see though. I appreciate you watching

Great work!! Think it need some time to clean the debris carbon.. To help it., my only tip is STP Full System Cleaner,.. That stuff are immediately working.. Check also air leaks in box.. Only a fraction of a leak will make the bike stuttering.. Big Thanks for letting us follow you on the adventure!.. :-)
@BrickHouseBuilds
@BrickHouseBuilds 2 жыл бұрын
Thank ya. I had been through the aixbox off camera to seal any potential leak points. I also always inspect intake manifolds for cracking and leak potential. I had these manifolds in my heated ultrasonic to soften them up before using again.

I had a 72/ 750 back in the late 70's and at cursing speed it would go up and down on the rpms just a little. After cleaning carbs and no change I took it to Honda mechanic --it was the rubber tubes inbetween carbs and head that had small cracks in them. Just to let you know if you don't already.
@BrickHouseBuilds
@BrickHouseBuilds Жыл бұрын
Yup cracked manifolds will do that. Air leaks can be tricky. I always inspect those.

Oh the memories. From 72 to 76 I was a certified Honda Mechanic. The CB 750 was a dream machine. In 2009 I rode a 72 CB 750 I rebuilt 3500 miles over the Bear-tooth Pass in Montana. She was smoother and sexier than my Sportster or Vic Crossroad. 90 mph all day at 45mpg. That's one for the boomers you millenniums that can't survive without your damn phone...

Thank you Tom! They get replaced when they are hard. These were still plenty good as I remove them and get them warm to soften them with my ultrasonic cleaner. Works great and revives the rubber.

Just a thought to consider. 50 year old rubber brake lines.! Deterirate from the inside and will continue to cause issues. Best practice is to replace them. I love your videos and looking forward to watching you work on the CBX. Subd.
