Trigger Warning: The following episode contains content about sexual assault, child abuse, drug abuse, death, violence, and mental illness that some viewers may find disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised.
Today, the Taylors are sitting down for an exclusive episode with Angel Carter Conrad as she bravely opens up about the tragic passing of her twin brother, Aaron Carter, and other details surrounding the Carter family. To begin, Angel talks about what life was like for her and her siblings growing up while their parents struggled with addiction. She explains when she and her siblings began battling addiction themselves, then shares about her relationships with her family and explains the real reason why she filed a restraining order against Aaron. Angel gives valuable insight into why it is so important for children to have a stable environment to grow up in and talks about the genetic component of mental health and how it can often run in the family. Finally, she offers advice for talking to young kids about mental health, highlights some signs that show a child may be struggling, and gives tips for someone who sees themselves stuck in a generational cycle but feels discouraged that they aren't strong enough to break it. We want to give a huge thank you to Angel for her vulnerability and strength in sharing her unimaginable story.

Angel doesn’t owe anyone on social media an explanation on how she helped her twin. She did everything she could, as did others who loved him, but Aaron did what Aaron wanted. She’s so strong & has an important story to tell.

@char_bsb I kinda feel like a lot of those fans of his that act like that have not lived with such a close loved one who not only was using drugs but have mental illness issues they don't want to get help for. Everyone has their limits and wish his fans could see they did everything they could but couldn't put themselves or their kids in any more danger or the anguish of trying to help someone who was not ready to get help

you're right! people who expected her and Nick to help Leslie, Aaron or BJ have zero clue about addiction. you can help them all you want, drive them to rehab every time. chain them to a bed a force them to get clean....but it won't stick unless they are ready to get clean, otherwise its a constant battle. and even when they choose to get clean....they need to be taught coping mechanisms so they don't go back to addiction

Their childhood wasn't easy. Nick and Aaron were marketed. Instead of love, care and protection, the focus was on money. Aaron couldn't cope with it all. He didn't get what a child his age deserved. All the other children had to walk alongside. The story of the Carter family is tragic. Thank you Angel for going public and standing up for mental health. You are a strong woman and you should be proud of yourself!

I think about the Carter family all the time. I grew up listening to Aaron and The Backstreet Boys. I watched House of Carter in the 2000's thinking it was just funny drama but looking back knowing 3 of those siblings died young because they were struggling with addiction or mental health issues, its obvious they had a very difficult childhood.

Thank you, Angel. You filled in so many gaps. Aaron stan, my literal #1, since 1999 and those last few years were seriously difficult to watch. He blocked me once because he misunderstood me, but I didn't blame him too much because he dealt with so much hate online. I miss him so much. I miss his spirit. I know you don't hate your mom, but I'll happily do it for all of you. I'm glad your dad apologized but I do not understand, as a mother, how you can fail so many humans you are responsible for. All Aaron ever wanted was love. I think of him every day because he truly deserved better and the chance to redeem himself. He was an amazing person but the drugs ruined him. 😢

I think that’s such an important note in this. A lot of times mental health issues will stem from something - esp before the addiction occurs. Here being the sexual abuse of three siblings, and then the addictions that followed. It’s also so evident that when you put in the work to heal, you will change your future.

Great episode! Angel is so such a beautiful soul. I do wish they went a bit further into the sexual abuse on anything Angel could have been comfortable with sharing. I know Aaron was accusing Leslie of abuse...what are Angel's thoughts about that? Were these people from the entertainment industry that hurt Aaron and Angel? Is there anything Angel wants to do to hold these people accountable? That is maybe one of the biggest things that haunted Aaron and there should probably be a deeper discussion about this.

People don't understand that families/friends can do everything right, and it still won't make a difference. Sometimes, loved ones have to make the hard choice to love from a distance. Most will be there if & when the addict/alcoholic is ready to seek help. It's a monster disease that impacts not just the addict/alcoholic, but loved ones too. More empathy, less judgment.

When she asked Angel what was there hardest thing mentally she ever had to deal with, Angels face and response was exactly what I was thinking. Angel it’s been amazing to watch you open up and tell your families story. As someone who grew up listening to both Aaron and the Backstreet Boys , we all feel like we have been apart of your family . Breaks my heart to see all that you all have had to go thru while we seemingly had no idea. It’s truly beautiful how you have turned all of this into such a positive legacy to it all.

I remember seeing pics of aaron with beer on yahoo groups(shows how old i am since aaron was a year older than me). I always knew it had to start off very young. Considering the trigger warnings at the beginning, I had thought they would mention how Nick was accused of SA, and how, from what I can recall, Aaron believed and supported the victims statements. Still however, it's not Angel's responsibility to discuss that, and it's possible that maybe she purposefully left it out because she worried it might be disrespectful to the victim to discuss it in an interview. It could be anything I guess. I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt though. Her and her family in general definitely went through horrible things that no one should have to go through, though. And some of this is just so surreal too; Aaron's passing feels like just yesterday to me for some reason. Honestly it could be because of how hard it hits for me; my fiancé had struggled with addiction and ultimately passed from suicide. He was sort of similar to Aaron in terms of personality and style. He passed almost nine years ago and I still have trouble sleeping at night sometimes thinking about it. To be fair, I couldn't properly truly process it for the first handful of years due to living in abusive household situations & then dealing with homelessness as a result of escaping. So I couldn't really unpack the trauma until I moved into my apartment over 2 years ago. In spite of everything I just mentioned though, I do still ultimately hope I can become as hopeful and healthy as Angel appears to be here. And again, giving her the benefit of the doubt, I hope she is just as well, of course.

Considering that the matter of the allegations is still in court process, it's probably not smart to talk about it publicly and that's why I think both Angel and Nick are being pretty silent about it still. Aaron was manipulated and used in the peak of his struggles by the allegged victims, purposely using the complicated relationship that Aaron had with his siblings and especially Nick. They played best friends with him for media coverage and then dipped. You can't really say Aaron believed the victims because he was obviously in a very poor mental state which can be so easily manipulated and taken advantage of. You can look up the later interviews he did where he denies his belief in accusations against Nick. It's all very sad, he was constantly exploited for the wrong things, his whole life... and deprived of the right ones.

I felt this was more about the family struggles they went through as kids and what it did to them. Especially to the now dead siblings. Besides, I don't think it's a good idea to talk about an ongoing courtcase. I think Nick (and Angel) are doing the right thing to stay quiet for now. Nick has said that he is looking forward to talk about it when the courtcase is over. And I think he will. As for Angel, I highly doubt that she would ever throw Nick under a bus like that. Their mother would though and she has done it several times. But Angel...no way. She knows better than that.

Nicks case is in the middle of a litigation so that's a good reason not to talk about it in a podcast. As for Melissa (one of Nick's accusers) she claimed that Angel lied about Aaron during the restraining order process. Most likely because she wanted to hide the fact that Aaron was having issues with his mental health because he was publicly supporting her. Despite the fact that Aaron was holding up a gun while on a live with Melissa and saying he was going to fight back and kill everyone and Melissa just said "I get what you mean". Contrary to what Melissa wanted the public to beleive, there is far more evidence supporting Angels claims about Aaron's mental health. I dont know what happened between Melissa and Nick or if he is innocent or not, but Melissa using Aaron to try and take Nick down looks really bad IMO.

Nick gets a bad rap due to that reality show and his mom talking so much crap about him. Now these allegations they use that time against him and his sister who barely speaks publicly is explaining how Nick been helping behind the scenes

Their mom is a nightmare. I feel so bad for them. Nick was always known for trying to help, but Aaron wouldn't get sober.

angel couldn't have a more appropriate name. she's an absolute light in this world and there's no one better to represent aaron in his best light than her. i'm so thankful she knew how to open up and i'll spend the rest of my life wishing aaron, leslie and bj were able to do the same. thank you for giving us this gift of getting to listen to angel and for giving her another safe place to talk. aaron will always be one of the most important people i had in my life, and his death will affect me greatly until it's my time. but angel being able to turn the hurt and pain into strength, resilience and something so positive is astounding and beyond admirable. i know aaron's so proud of her. and i know she knows it, too.

It is not a choice if you can’t choose to get out of it. People can’t just choose not to be addicted or not to be mentally ill. People make those bad, risky choices because they are already in the disease and have no control. The disease controls them. If it was as simple as choosing not to be mentally ill or addicted, no one would get sick, no one would die. People do try, and the illness can be too strong. Supporting someone with a mental illness is not enabling - the person will be sick regardless, they will only learn their illness is right and no one loves them. They will only become more isolated and hopeless. Cutting someone off for being sick is not love, it’s a form of control. It doesn’t work as we have seen. I really sympathise with Angel but charity starts at home and communicating that addiction and mental illness are choices only increases the stigma and cruelty that those who experience these frightening and desperate illnesses face

I didn't know that either. Her, Aaron and Leslie...the three youngest in the family 😢 wonder who did it to them. Angel got weirdly quiet when Tay said "...and you couldn't even tell your parents that this was happening" That was really odd. And it of course makes you wonder if one or both parents did something to them....holy sh1t if that is it🥺

@@char_bsbso true. Very sad ! Or it could've been another sibling. Aaron said it was Leslie but then BJ said Aaron did it to Leslie. Maybe it was another family member and then Aaron and Leslie SA each other bc they didn't know

@@FLMAMACBEAR617 well, I guess we'll never know unless Angel wants to talk about it some day. It's hard to know with Aaron what was true and what wasn't. He said so many weird things in his last years and constantly changed the narrative. I'm sure some of it were true though or at least had some kind of truth in it. But who really knows, huh 😕
