Thank you for this. Often I put down a layer of water and the part where I started is almost done drying as I’m finishing wetting the area

Thank you for this video Angela. It's nice to know that it takes a lot of brush miles and consistency of paper to get this down. I will have to stop using my Blick student grade paper and just use my Arches.

My question revolves around hard/soft edges. I paint something and want to blend the edges so they are not hard. By the time I blend the edge out, I’ve lost my shape. Or, it doesn’t look right. Or, even though I’ve dried my brush off I get a bloom. What are some tips on when to keep hard edges and when to blend them out. And, how to blend them out.

Thanks Angela, I recently read this in an old watercolor book "To extend the work time of your washes & add glow & transparency - add a few drops of Gum Arabic to your clean rinse water." I've tried it but not sure that it made a difference, may help in drier areas. :)

Thank you, Angela. I live in Arizona - very hot and dry. I really like painting wet into dry most of the time. I'm going to try wetting the back of my paper, which is 300# Fabriano rough. i'll see how that works.

Consistency in use of brand of paper is a very valuable tip. I had some student grade that I though would be great for practice so I wouldn't 'waste' the good stuff. Techniques just don't translate from one to the other. It's another case of ' penny wise, pound foolish'. I guess in Canada we need to say ' nickel wise and kilogram foolish'. :)

The first wash I can do well but it's the second attempt at placing the details that messes me up. I can do a landscape with evergreen trees and snow with a little red cabin also background mountains but it's the close up details like on a flower that I have difficult time painting? I know practice makes perfect. It's just I need an idea to work on. I should take a course but can't afford it right now. So if you have any ideas please let me know. Thank you for sharing your videos and thoughts 😊😎 FL.

What difficulty do you face? I think switch to a small brush and working in small segments help.

Like after first wash for the flower I go back into the piece to add details then I can't get the color affect like I would like. I try to make the flower darker in places and my paint won't work with me it's always to light or won't blend right. I guess I have a water problem? Use to much water? I don't know. I'm frustrated I guess. I just want to slap the brush on the paper! Lol maybe I should do that.😏.

I have a similar problem. There's a painting I'm working on. First attempt wasn't successful. I got caught up in the details and messed it up. Which is fine because I see it as problem solving and don't expect to get it right at once. Then I simplified my reference photo in a program. Used a filter and broke down the image in abstract shapes. It looks like you squint your eyes. The buildings and trees have no details. Just fields of colors but you can still read the image and tell what it is. To me it felt relaxing without the details and even better looking. Now I can focus on colors and shapes. In the future I will get into details but as a beginner want as little to worry about as possible. It stresses me out and makes painting less fun. This is what works for me and not necessarily the solution for someone else.

Watercolour 911, yes please. Cauliflowers/ backwash are my nemesis. Am saving up for an Arches cotton pad once I get better with w/c in general by making mistakes on the Canson. Got my paints and brushes under control by investing in good quality/artist grade. I am in western WA.

I received an indigo watercolor book for my birthday last December, and I've been afraid to "wreck" it, since my skills are not quite level two. My question: when I DO start to paint in it, should I remove the pages and tape them to a board as you did with the indigo paper in your demo to minimize buckling, or can I paint with them still in the book?

Thank you for all of the helpful tips. I am fairly new to watercolor. If we are going to be painting wet on dry, should we first wet our paper and let it dry for better results?

8:10 You know I LOVE that granulation... does that opaque lavender do that naturally? or is it the texture of the paper?

They have a lavender which is white gouache and another color and wisteria looks like that too which is white titanium and I believe quinacridone magenta. I mixed my own and it look exactly like what's in the tube. Lots of lighter colors are like that. Forgive me for butting in.

Is there a reason to not include watercolour mediums like ox gall or synthetic ox gall? Don't they extend the drying time?
@jenniefrench1338
@jenniefrench1338 4 жыл бұрын
I am not Angela but use ox gall sparingly. It causes the pigment to spreadout as much as it can so you can really thin out and lighten colors on for example flowers. One just adds a few drops to the clean water and it does the trick. I have never used synthetic so I do not know about that.

Higher-quality watercolor paper is not more absorbent than lower-quality watercolor paper: it has better sizing. The sizing helps the water not get absorbed into the paper too quickly, and if it does, more evenly so. It is the sizing the helps the paint move across the paint more evenly, as well as the texture of the paper. Good sizing also prevents pigment from getting absorbed into the paper, so that it is more on the surface of the paper, and thus, more vibrant.

Thank you so much- so helpful. It's incredibly hot where I live and seems impossible to keep the paper wet. Doesn't heavier paper stay wet longer too? Where I am, 640gsm Saunders paper is the same price as 300gsm arches... heavier better option?
